This paper deals with the numerical simulation of the deployment process of a parabolic space reflector. The described deployable antenna is of the rigid panel type. The numerical simulations cover kinematic, inverse dynamic, quasi-static and dynamic analysis modes. Special phenomena included are hinge friction and the investigation of a deployment failure mode. Different software packages have been applied and their performance has been assessed.

An infinitely variable transmission (IVT), based on the use of one-way action clutches, belonging to the family of ratcheting drives is described. The mechanical foundations and numerical simulations carried out along this research envisage a plausible approach to its use as gear-box in general mechanical industry and its prospective use in automobiles and self-propelled vehicles. The system includes one-way clutches—free wheels or overrunning clutches—and two epicyclic gear systems. The output velocity, with oscillatory character, common to the ratcheting drives systems, presents a period similar to that produced by alternative combustion motors, making this transmission compatible with automobile applications. The variation of the transmission is linear in all the working range. The kinematics operating principles behind this IVT is described followed by a numerical simulation of the dynamic analysis. A prototype has been constructed and tested to assess its mechanical efficiency for different reduction ratios. The efficiency values predicted by theory agree with those experimentally obtained on a bench-rig testing equipment.

Dynamics of two models (simplified and complex) of a small, typical vibrating table is considered in the paper. The table consists of vibrating plate and electrical vibrator, mounted in the central position of the plate, which excites the vibrations of the table. The coefficient of transversal stiffness of the spring has been determined on the basis of numerical simulation. The spring is an essential element of the system. The results of performed numerical simulations are presented in the graphical form.

In this study, the failure behaviors of debris flows were studied by flume model tests with artificial rainfall and numerical simulations (PFC3D). Model tests revealed that grain sizes distribution had profound effects on failure mode, and the failure in slope of medium sand started with cracks at crest and took the form of retrogressive toe sliding failure. With the increase of fine particles in soil, the failure mode of the slopes changed to fluidized flow. The discrete element methodPFC3Dcan overcome the hypothesis of the traditional continuous medium mechanic and consider the simple characteristics of particle. Thus, a numerical simulations model considering liquid-solid coupled method has been developed to simulate the debris flow. Comparing the experimental results, the numerical simulation result indicated that the failure mode of the failure of medium sand slope was retrogressive toe sliding, and the failure of fine sand slope was fluidized sliding. The simulation result is consistent with the model test and theoretical analysis, and grain sizes distribution caused different failure behavior of granular debris flows. This research should be a guide to explore the theory of debris flow and to improve the prevention and reduction of debris flow.

Abstract. The Nice Côte d'Azur international airport is subject to horizontal low-level wind shears. Detecting and predicting these hazards is a major concern for aircraft security. A measurement campaign took place over the Nice airport in 2009 including 4 anemometers, 1 wind lidar and 1 wind profiler. Two wind shear events were observed during this measurement campaign. Numerical simulations were carried out with Meso-NH in a configuration compatible with near-real time applications to determine the ability of the numerical model to predict these events and to study the meteorological situations generating an horizontal wind shear. A comparison between numerical simulation and the observation dataset is conducted in this paper.

The static and dynamic analysis of slender systems, which in this paper comprise lines and flexible links of manipulators, requires large deformations to be taken into consideration. This paper presents a modification of the rigid finite element method which enables modeling of such systems to include bending, torsional and longitudinal flexibility. In the formulation used, the elements into which the link is divided have seven DOFs. These describe the position of a chosen point, the extension of the element, and its orientation by means of the Euler angles Z[Formula: see text]Y[Formula: see text]X[Formula: see text]. Elements are connected by means of geometrical constraint equations. A compact algorithm for formulating and integrating the equations of motion is given. Models and programs are verified by comparing the results to those obtained by analytical solution and those from the finite element method. Finally, they are used to solve a benchmark problem encountered in nonlinear dynamic analysis of multibody systems.
