Abstract Rolling bearings are still widely used in aeroengines. Whenever rotors are modeled, rolling bearing components are typically modeled using springs. In simpler models, this spring is considered to have a constant mean value. However, the rolling bearing stiffness changes with time due to the positions of the balls with respect to the load on the bearing, thus giving rise to an internal excitation known as Parametric Excitation. Due to this parametric excitation, the rotor-bearings system may become unstable for specific combinations of boundary conditions (e.g. rotational speed) and system characteristics (rotor flexibility etc.). Being able to identify these instability regions at a glance is an important tool for the designer, as it allows to discard since the early design stages those configurations which may lead to catastrophic failures. In this paper, a Jeffcott rotor supported and excited by such rolling bearings is used as a demonstrator. In the first step, the expression for the time–varying stiffness of the bearings is analytically derived by applying the Hertzian Contact Theory. Then, the equations of motion of the complete system are provided. In this study, the Harmonic Balance Method (HBM) is used to as an approximate procedure to draw a stability map, thus dividing the input parameter space, i.e. rotational speed and rotor physical characteristics, into stable and unstable regions.

There are few reported situations in which a drop of liquid will remain intact in ambient conditions for an indefinite period of time. The paper describes a situation where this happens. The phenomenon was noticed during experiments concerned with the development of a novel rotational speed sensor. It proved to be a substantial rather than a passing occurrence.

Abstract A nonlinear dynamic model is proposed to investigate the dynamic interactions between the rolling element and cage under rotational speed fluctuation conditions. Discontinuous Hertz contact between the rolling element and the cage and lubrication and interactions between rolling elements and raceways are considered. The dynamic model is verified by comparing simulation result with the published experimental data. Based on this model, the interaction forces and the contact positions between the rolling element and the cage with and without the rotational speed fluctuation are analyzed. The effects of fluctuation amplitude, fluctuation frequency, and cage pocket clearance on the interaction forces between the rolling element and the cage are also investigated. The results show that the fluctuation of the rotational speed and the cage pocket clearance significantly affects the interaction forces between the rolling element and the cage.

This paper presents a conception of a system designed for monitoring combustion process in a multi-cylinder combustion engine. The proposed system is based on the application of a pressure sensor installed in one of the engine’s cylinders. The analysis of the combustion process in the remaining cylinders is possible as a result of analyzing the course of the rotational speed by means of a sensor with a large resolution integrated with engine control phase sensor. This paper presents results of the initial testing of its operation and results of research into a system named CPMOS (Combustion Process Onboard Monitoring System) dedicated to a self-ignition engine of an off-highway vehicle. The use of an algorithm which applies a synthesis of a pressure sensor signal and rotational speed sensor offers the possibility of gaining a reconstructed course of pressure in all cylinders in the engine. The proposed measurement of pressure in a cylinder not involving fuel injection system can provide more detailed information regarding the course of the combustion process in the particular cylinders. The proposed concept of the CPMOS system leads to a decrease in the overall system cost as a result of the application of a single pressure sensor in a single cylinder. The future potential application of the monitoring of the combustion in each cylinder can enable the improvement of the operating parameters of the cylinders as a result of optimizing the control of the fuel injection system, EGR system and systems used for limiting exhaust gases used in the vehicle.

Lubrication analysis of rolling bearing is often conducted with assumed operating conditions, which does not consider the effect of internal dynamics of rolling bearing. In this paper, the effects of the applied load and bearing rotational speed on the lubrication performance in an angular contact ball bearing are conducted, which combines the bearing dynamic analysis and thermo-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) analysis. First, the internal motions and contact forces are obtained from the developed bearing dynamic model, and then were integrated into the TEHL model to investigate the lubrication performance of the bearing. The results show that the rotational speed and external load has significant effects on film thickness, temperature, and power loss; if the improper axial load is applied for certain bearing speed, the lubrication performance will deteriorate and thermal failure may occur; there exists critical load or speed to keep good lubrication performance and avoid thermal failure; the skidding contributes to the thermal failure and bad lubrication performance.
