Abstract2-(Quinolin-2-yl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one (Q) was synthesized via the Brønsted acid-promoted tandem cyclization/dehydrogenation reaction with a good yield. Compound Q is a selective ‘turn-on’ fluorescent sensor for Zn2+ ion without interference by Cd2+. The 1:1 binding model of Q to Zn2+ was confirmed by the Benesi-Hildebrand analysis, Job’s plot analysis and a ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) titration experiment. Furthermore, the light-on fluorescent response can be observed by the naked eye under UV-lamp irradiation (365 nm).

AbstractA new fluorescent sensor based on a benzimidazole unit bearing bis(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)amino groups was designed and synthesized. The ligand exhibits strong sensitivity and selectivity for Ag+ by enhanced fluorescent intensity in the presence of a wide range of other tested metal ions in methanol. The colorimetric and fluorescent response to Ag+ can be conveniently detected even by the naked eye, which offers a facile method for visual detection of Ag+.

A new “naked-eye” colorimetric and fluorometric chemosensor HAFPA synthesized form both 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 complexes with Zn2+ and only 1 : 1 complex with Cd2+ which can detect intracellular Zn2+ and Cd2+ in A549 cells.

The new symmetric acyclic N,N’-bis(1-pyrenyl) squaramide (H2L) functionalized with the pyrene moiety as a fluorogenic fragment has been designed and its ability to selectively detect specific anions and metals investigated. H2L selectively binds Cl− both in solution (DMSO 0.5% H2O and MeCN) and in the solid state, and allows to selectively detect Cu2+ in MeCN with the formation of a 2:1 metal-receptor complex, with a green intense emission appreciable by naked eye under the UV lamp. The H2L copper complex preserves its emission properties in the presence of Cl−. The addition of basic anions (OH−, CN−, and F−) up to 10 equivalents caused the deprotonation of the squaramide NHs and a dramatic change of the emission properties of the H2L copper complex.

By utilizing laboratory-guided evolution, we have converted the fluorescent proton-pumping rhodopsin GR from Gloeobacter violaceus into GR1, a red-shifted, turn-on fluorescent sensor for chloride.
