Abstract In December of 2012, North Korea successfully launched a satellite, after failures in 1998, 2009 and 2012. The carrier missiles used during the last three launches are of a new design. Computer simulations of different models for these missiles, using information on the satellite trajectories, show that they require more advanced technology than North Korea has demonstrated previously. This knowledge allows an estimate of the performance of two road mobile ballistic missiles shown during parades in 2010 and 2012. The first, known as the Musudan, theoretically has a range that is considerably larger than the currently operational North Korean missiles. The second, the KN-08, however, is too heavy to be based on the rocket engines used in the missiles used for the satellite launches, which means that it is either a mock-up or that North Korea is developing more powerful engines. The lack of a flight test program makes it unlikely that either of these missiles is close to being operational.

AbstractThe determination of structural loads plays an important role in the certification process of new aircraft. Strain gauges are usually used to measure and monitor the structural loads encountered during the flight test program. However, a time-consuming wiring and calibration process is required to determine the forces and moments from the measured strains. Sensors based on MEMS provide an alternative way to determine loads from the measured aerodynamic pressure distribution around the structural component. Flight tests were performed with a research glider aircraft to investigate the flight loads determined with the strain based and the pressure based measurement technology. A wing glove equipped with 64 MEMS pressure sensors was developed for measuring the pressure distribution around a selected wing section. The wing shear force determined with both load determination methods were compared to each other. Several flight maneuvers with varying loads were performed during the flight test program. This paper concentrates on the evaluation of dynamic flight maneuvers including Stalls and Pull-Up Push-Over maneuvers. The effects of changes in the aerodynamic flow characteristics during the maneuver could be detected directly with the pressure sensors based on MEMS. Time histories of the measured pressure distributions and the wing shear forces are presented and discussed.

The impact of new advanced technology on issues that concern meaningful information and its relation to studies of intelligence constitutes the main topic of the present paper. The advantages, disadvantages and implications of the synthetic methodology developed by cognitive scientists, according to which mechanical models of the mind, such as computer simulations or self-organizing robots, may provide good explanatory tools to investigate cognition, are discussed. A difficulty with this methodology is pointed out, namely the use of meaningless information to explain intelligent behavior that incorporates meaningful information. In this context, it is inquired what are the contributions of cognitive science to contemporary studies of intelligent behavior and how technology may play a role in the analysis of the relationships established by organisms in their natural and social environments.
