Objectives: Perineal warm packs with an increase in subcutaneous temperature and the stimulation of cutaneous receptors are advocated in the belief of pain and probably increase comfort during labor and delivery. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of warm compress bi-stage on pain strength in the first two stages of labor and after delivery in primiparous women. Materials and Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial that was conducted in Shiraz hospitals from July 2012 to March 2013, in which 150 women participated and were separated into intervention (15-20-minute warm compress bi-stage in the first two stages of normal delivery at 7 and 10 cm dilations and zero position) and control (just usual hospital cares) groups. Then, pain strength was evaluated in both groups in the first two stages of normal delivery and after delivery similar to the frequency of episiotomy. The chi-square, t test, and odds ratio analysis were used for data analysis Results: The results of the t test showed that the mean intensity of pain reduced significantly in intervention group in both first (P<0.002) and second stages (P<0.001) and on the day after delivery (P<0.001). Besides, the frequency of episiotomy meaningfully decreased in the intervention group in comparison with the control group (P<0.001). Conclusions: The research participants experienced less pain through the labor and after delivery by using warm compress bi-stage at 7 and 10 cm dilatations. Thus, this method might be suitable for reducing perineal pain resulting from episiotomy

AbstractBackgroundAnxiety and fear of labor pain has led to elevated cesarean section rate in some countries. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of yoga in pregnancy on anxiety, labor pain and length of labor stages.MethodsThis clinical trial study was performed on 84 nulliparous women who were at least 18 years old and were randomly divided into two groups of yoga and control groups. Pregnancy Yoga Program consisting of 6 60-min training sessions was started every 2 weeks from week 26 of pregnancy and continued until 37 weeks of gestation. Anxiety severity at maternal admission to labor was measured by the Spielbergers State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and labor pain was measured by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at dilatation (4–5 cm) and 2 h after the first measurement. Data were analyzed using Chi-Square and t-test.ResultsIntervention group reported less pain at dilatation (4–5 cm) (p=0.001) and 2 h after the first measurement (p=0.001) than the control group. Stat anxiety was also lower in intervention group than the control group (p=0.003) at the entrance to labor room. Subjects in the control group required more induction compared to intervention group (p=0.003). Women in intervention group experienced shorter duration of the first phase of the labor than the control group (p=0.002). Also, the total duration of two stages of labor was shorter in intervention group than the control group (p=0.003).ConclusionsPracticing yoga during pregnancy may reduce women’s anxiety during labor; shorten labor stages, and lower labor pain.

Background: Bronchiolitis is a viral infection that causes the airways (bronchioles) in the lungs to become narrow, which makes breathing difficult. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin A on persistent wheezing in infants with bronchiolitis. Methods: This study was performed on 60 infants with bronchiolitis who were randomly divided into two equal groups (n = 30) of intervention (receiving 5000 units per kg of vitamin A injection) and control. The severity of wheezing and retraction and number of breaths in the patients were recorded. Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U test, and t-test were used to compare the data. Results: Our study showed that 6.7% of infants in the control group had severe wheezing during the discharge, while no wheezing was reported in the intervention group. Also, the rate of moderate wheezing in the control and intervention groups was 40% and 10%, respectively (P = 0.006). Two weeks after treatment, the moderate wheezing frequency in the control group was 30%, but no wheezing was recorded in the intervention group, which was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Conclusions: In this study, administration of vitamin A significantly reduced the severity of wheezing in patients with bronchiolitis. Accordingly, it is recommended that vitamin A along with other treatments, be prescribed for all infants with symptoms of bronchiolitis.

Providing counseling is one of the factors that increase the knowledge and actions of mothers in meeting adequate nutritional consumption. This study aimed to identify the lactation and nutrition counseling towards mother's knowledge and intake in Puskesmas Kebayoran Lama Jakarta. This research was a quasi-experimental study pre-post with a control group design. Sample collection technique used consecutive sampling with 30 respondents in each group (intervention group and control group). Counseling was given 3 times, after giving birth, a child at age 7-14 days and age 35 days. Knowledge and food intake were collected before and after the intervention. The bivariate analysis used an independent t-test and paired t-test with a significance level of p0.05. There was a significant difference in mother's knowledge about breastfeeding between the intervention group and control group after they were given lactation counseling (p0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the mother's nutrient intake between the intervention and control group after counseled (p0.05). Lactation counseling can positively affect the mother's knowledge about breastfeeding, but not for the mother's action in consuming enough nutrient intake. ABSTRAKPemberian konseling menjadi salah satu faktor yang meningkatkan pengetahuan dan tindakan ibu dalam memenuhi konsumsi gizi yang adekuat. Background: Episiotomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in the world that is associated with perineal pain and can be exposed to infection, or might be healed with delay. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of honey-olive oil combination on episiotomy wound healing and pain relief in primiparous women. Methods: This single-blind, parallel randomized clinical trial (IRCT20120215009014N208) was conducted on 80 primiparous women. They were allocated randomly to each of the groups through random allocation rule: 40 in honey-olive oil group and 40 in the control group. Every 12 hours and for 14 days, the treatment group used about 1 inch of the cream on the wound area. Pain intensity and wound healing were measured by REEDA Scale and Visual Analogue Scale on days 7, 10, and 14 in both groups. The statistical analyst was not informed about the allocation of the groups. A significant level of 0.05 was considered. Results: There was a significant difference between healing score and pain intensity between the two groups on 7th, 10th and 14th postpartum days (p <0.05). Wound healing occurred much faster (Scores on days 7,10, and 14 were 11.25±2.13, 7.47±1.96 and 4.95±1.53 in the control group and 4.45±1.25, 2.32±.69 and 10±.30 in the intervention group, p <0.05). Moreover, pain intensity was significantly relieved in those who used Honey and olive oil cream (the scores were 5.6750±1.43, 3.3500±1.52, 2.2250±1.34 in the control group and 1.9750±1.52, .2250±.57, .0250±.15 in the intervention group, p<0.05). Conclusion: Using honey and olive oil combination improves episiotomy wound healing and also relieves its’ associated pain.

In Sudan, cancer incidence has been growing considerably in recent years and is likely to continue to grow creating a big burden on the health system resources. The aim of this study is to assess the baseline Perception and Practice about breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE) and to nd out the effectiveness of an educational program about breast cancer and BSE on Perception and Practice among women in AlJeeraif West Administrative Unit. Community based intervention study with pre-post and control was carried out among 200 women who were recruited by means of multistage sampling. The sample size was divided equally into intervention and control groups. Baseline data was collected from both groups through direct interview, using structured close ended questionnaire. Educational program was implemented for the intervention group. Four months after the intervention, women in the study and control groups were exposed to the same questionnaire. Chi-square, paired t-test and independent t-test (difference of difference) were conducted in the course of the data analyses. There was statistically signicant difference in the intervention group pre-post program in all of the HBM components in the intervention group (p value0.000), while in the control group statistically signicant difference existed only in perceived barrier (p value.004) and perceived benet (p value.000) and over all perception (p value .016) with no signicant difference in other (HBM) components. In the intervention group practice and performance scores were highly signicant pre-post program (p value 0.000), where as in the control group only practice was signicant (p value 0.001). There were statistically signicant differences in the mean difference of performance, practice and perceptions between the intervention and control groups (p-value .000). The results of this study have conrmed the effectiveness of educational program based on the health belief model on improving perceptions and practice of breast cancer and breast self-examination.
