Recently developed biopolymers can contain lead due to contamination from the origin of the material used to make them. A method for determining the presence of lead is proposed, using GF-AAS in thermoformed and biodegradable flexible films and flour and starch samples from Cassava. Acid digestion with reflux was optimized and the statistical quality parameters were standardized. The graphite furnace heating program was adjusted through pyrolysis and atomization curves. The working range was from 2.0 to 7.0 μg/L, with limits of detection and quantification of 0.618 and 1.853 μg/L, respectively. The precision was evaluated using intermediate precision and repeatability of the method, which showed standard deviations of less than 4.70% and 4.36%, respectively. The percentage of recovery ranged from 94.8% to 106.5%. The results obtained support the suitability of the method for determining the presence of lead. Lead concentrations were below 1 mg/Kg, indicating that these polymers can be used for food containers.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was designed and distributed electronically in Saudi Arabia in November 2015.The questionnairewas conducted on 769 Saudi women aged from15-60 years old that is using cosmetic products. Secondly, 10samples from 10 different types of eyeliners frequently used in Saudi Arabia were digested. The digested sampleswere analyzed for lead, cadmium andmercury using graphite furnace- atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS). Results:Themajorityofcosmetictypesusedbyparticipantswereeye-linerkohl(73.9%).About(34.59 %) of participants were not aware about heavy metals contents in cosmetics. The heavy metals, cadmium, lead andmercury were detected in all samples with varying concentrations. The level of lead was the highest. There was asignificant difference of cadmium, lead and mercury concentration p< (0.05) in different brands of eyeliner. Therewasstatisticallysignificant difference betweencadmiumandlead alsobetweenmercuryandlead p<0.05ofdifferenteyelinerbrands. Conclusion: It was foundthatthemajorityofparticipantsexpectedthatexpensivecosmeticsaresafe and theypreferred internationalbrandswhichisnotnecessarytobesafe.

Abstract A method based on graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) was developed for determining platinum in wine. Wine samples were prepared by microwave acid digestion or dry mineralization. The method of standard addition was used for Pt determination in untreated wine samples and mineralized samples. Analyte modifiers and furnace conditions were optimized. Effects of cations (Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, Na+, and NH|) and anions (PO43, SO42) were tested separately and in combination. Analytical characteristics of the method were optimized for analyte recovery and signal enhancement. Recoveries ranged from 92.5 to 102%, and precision reproducibility relative standard deviation varied from 7.5 to 10%. Red, rosé, and white wines from France were analyzed. Platinum levels found in most wines were very low (&lt;10 μg/L).

Aegean Sea albacore (T. alalunga), fresh or processed, is marketed locally in Greece or exported, mainly to Japan, Italy, Spain, and France. To provide information for consumers and biomonitoring programs and assess the potential human health risks, concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were determined in albacore edible muscle samples from two fishing grounds of the Aegean Sea, Greece via graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS). Of the 82 individuals, 28 contained Cd and three contained Pb above the permissible limits set by the European Union (0.1 mg kg−1 wet wt and 0.3 mg kg−1 wet wt, respectively). None of the samples contained mercury above the limit (1.0 mg kg−1 wet wt). Potential health risks to human via dietary intake of albacore were estimated by the total target hazard quotients (TTHQs), which indicated that the consumers could acquire health problems due to consumption of Aegean Sea albacore. Thus consequently, concentrations of toxic heavy metals in albacore, especially mercury, must be monitored regularly and comprehensively with respect to consumer health.

Computer modeling was used to compare calibration curves and relative concentration errors for normal, linearized, and three-field Zeeman GF-AAS. The model assumed that either photon shot noise or the combination of photon shot and analyte fluctuation noise were limiting and that the sole source of nonlinearity was stray light. For absorbance, the calibration range and the relative concentration error for all three methods are almost identical. The difference is a reduced-sensitivity curve for three-field Zeeman, which offers a relative concentration error advantage in the concentration region where the most sensitive curve rolls over. For integrated absorbance, the sum of absorbances over the analytical peak, linearized Zeeman provides a significant relative concentration error advantage over the other methods at the high concentration end of the calibration curve. The calibration range is effectively extended by at least 1.5 orders of magnitude. This advantage arises from integration of absorbances which have a linear relationship to concentration. At high concentrations, absorbances computed for normal and three-field Zeeman are nonlinear with respect to concentration. Three-field Zeeman offers no advantage over normal Zeeman for integrated absorbance.

Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GF-AAS) is not a new method in chemical analysis, especially for metals and metalloids, unfortunately there are a lot of laboratories in Indonesia that still not used it correctly, whereas if used it correctly, the method will be an excellent and can be a reference method. This review focus on the kinds of interferences in the GF-AAS such as spectral, physic and chemical interferences and alsoon the use of a lot of kinds of chemical modifier that very important part in analysis by GF-AAS, however it is often unused because of the difficulty. It is noted that highest absorption level from each analyte is different even though used the same modifier and ashing temperature, therefore the selection of chemical modifier is important to find the appropriate modifier for each analyte and their matrixes.Keyword: GF-AAS, spectral interferences, physic interferences, chemical interferences, chemical modifier
