Palavras-Chave: Penman-Monteith, radiação solar global, amplitude térmica   SANTOS, A. A. C.ESTIMATES OF THE REFERENCE EVAPOTRANSPIRATION USING AIR TEMPERATURE EXTREMES IN THE STATE OF THE RIO DE JANEIRO, SOUTHEASTERN BRAZIL 2 ABSTRACT The use of the Penman-Monteith FAO56 method (PM-FAO 56) to estimate reference evapotranspiration (ETo) requires several weather elements. However, most weather stations don’t measure all the elements, which restricts the application of PM-FAO 56. The aim of this article was to evaluate the performance of five empirical methods (Thornthwaite, Camargo, Hargreaves-Samani, Jensen-Haise and Makkink) to estimate ETo using air temperature extremes in the state of the Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Times series of weather elements between eight and 34 years from 10 conventional stations of the Brazilian National Institute of Meteorology located in RJ were used. The ten-day and monthly estimates of ETo by empirical methods were compared to ETo determined by PM-FAO 56 (default) to evaluate the accuracy (Standard Error of the Estimate - SEE and Willmott index - d), precision (coefficient of determination - R²) and performance (Camargo and Sentelhas – c Index) of the methods. Independent of the time scale, the Makkink method showed the highest accuracies (d > 0.82 and SEE < 0.68 mm d-1), precision (R² > 0.88) and performance (c Index > 0.85) on the stations, characterized with humid, sub-humid, dry sub-humid with small water surplus. For the other stations, semiarid and dry sub-humid climate with no surplus, the Hargreaves-Samani method had the best performance (c Index > 0.85). The Thornthwaite and Camargo methods presented accuracy (d > 0.90 and SEE < 0.72 mm d-1) and performance (Index c > 0.76) between the top and can be used to estimate ETo in RJ. For all stations and time scales, the worst accuracies (d < 0.73 and SEE > 1.38 mm d-1) and performance (0.51 < Index c < 0.75) estimates were provided by the Jensen-Haise method, so it is not recommended its application in RJ state. The Hargreaves-Samani, Jensen-Haise and Makkink methods should be fitted to the climatic conditions of RJ. Keywords: Penman-Monteith, solar global radiation, temperature amplitude

Evapotranspiration can be sufficiently estimated when meteorological data are available to implement robust models such as Penman-Monteith (PM). However, due to data scarcity, alternative approaches are necessary. In this context, this study aims to compare the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) obtained from the PM standard method with eight empirical equations to identify the simplest method that can be alternative to the reference method (Penman Monteith method) for ten places in state of Goiás (located in west-central Brazil, Brazilian Savanna). To estimate the ETo, air temperature and relative humidity air, wind speed, sunshine and solar radiation data, which were obtained from the data platform National Institute of Meteorology and the Meteorological and Hydrological System of the State of Goiás, were used. For comparison of empirical methods with PM standard method, we used the following statistical indicators: slope and intercept coefficients (β0 and β1) of regressions equations, the coefficient of determination (r²), Pearson's correlation (r), mean bias error (MBE), root mean square error (RMSE) concordance index refined (dr) and performance index (Pi). Our results indicated that the Turc method is the best option for the state of Goiás when meteorological data are not suffeciently available to use the standard PM method. On the other hand, the method of Romanenko did not present acceptable performance in nine of the ten studied localities. Therefore, its use is advised only in the municipality of the Itumbiara. Among evaluated methods the Hargreaves-Samani method is the best alternative, when there is only air temperature data.

Our study aimed to add information about the diet and endoparasites of Enyalius brasiliensis from an Atlantic Rainforest remnant in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Regarding diet, E. brasiliensis consumed arthropods, with caterpillars and beetles being the most important preys. Regarding helminth parasites, overall prevalence was low (9.5%), with 238 nematodes of the genus Physaloptera found in the stomach of one specimen and one nematode of the genus Rhabdias inside the lung of another. Our results corroborate the observations of previous studies that indicate that lizards of the genus Enyalius tend to feed mainly on relatively large-bodied arthropods and to harbour depauperate endoparasite fauna.

Aiming at assessing the performance of alternative methods to Penman-Monteith FAO56 for estimating the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) for Londrina, Paraná, Brazil, the methods temperature radiation, Hicks-Hess, Hargreaves-Samani (1982), Turc, Priestley-Taylor, Tanner-Pelton, Jensen-Haise, Makkink, modified Hargreaves, Stephens-Stewart, Abtew, global radiation, Ivanov, Lungeon, Hargreaves-Samani (1985), Benavides-Lopez, original Penman, Linacre, Blaney-Morin, Romanenko, Hargreaves (1974), McCloud, Camargo, Hamon, Kharrufa, McGuiness-Bordne, and Blaney-Criddle were compared to that standard method recommended by FAO. The estimations were correlated by linear regression and assessed by using the Person’s correlation coefficient (r), concordance index (d), and performance index (c) using a set of meteorological data of approximately 40 years. The methods modified Hargreaves, Stephens-Stewart, Abtew, global radiation, Ivanov, Lungeon, Hargreaves-Samani (1985), Benavides-Lopez, original Penman, and Linacre should be avoided, as they did not present excellent results. The methods McCloud, Camargo, Hamon, Kharrufa, McGuinness-Bordne, Blaney-Criddle, Hargreaves (1974), Romanenko, and Blaney-Morin were classified as very bad, not being recommended. In contrast, the methods temperature radiation, Hicks-Hess, Hargreaves-Samani (1982), Turc, Priestley-Taylor, Tenner-Pelton, Jensen-Haise, and Makkink presented excellent performance indices and can be applied in the study region.

Abstract: We provide an inventory checklist of the amphibians from Parque Nacional da Restinga de Jurubatiba (PNRJ), a sandy coastal environment in southeastern Brazil. As a result of three years of surveys, from August 2013 to June 2016, a total of 36 amphibians species were recorded - one Gymnophiona (Typhlonectidae) and 35 species of five anuran families: Bufonidae (2 species), Craugastoridae (1), Hylidae (21), Leptodactylidae (8), and Microhylidae (3). One specie is reported for the first time for the restinga ecosystem (Chthonerpeton braestrupi) and 24 species were recorded for the first time to the PNRJ. This result reinforces the importance of long-term studies for accurate knowledge of the biodiversity. Considering that the biodiversity of the fragments of the sandy coastal environments in the state of Rio de Janeiro is poorly known, the present study provided a more detailed knowledge about different aspects of the biodiversity in the PNRJ, contributing to the preservation of this threatened ecosystem.

Precipitation and air temperature numerical simulations through ETA/CPTEC - HADCM3 model in Rio de Janeiro A B S T R A C TThe present study evaluated the precipitation and air temperature simulations of the Eta-CPTEC model for Rio de Janeiro state in 1961-1990. In the simulations, a spatial resolution of 40 km was considered for a grid that comprised South America, with Eta-CPTEC initialized with HadCM3 model. The observed climatic series of the studied variables were obtained from INMET meteorological stations distributed at Rio de Janeiro state. These series were compared with those extracted from the grid points of the model near to the stations. The coefficient of determination (r²) of the simple linear regression between observed and simulated, Willmott's index of agreement (d), performance index (c), Root Mean Square Error (RQME) and their systematic (RQMEs) and unsystematic (RQMEu) components were considered in the evaluations. The precipitation simulations showed r² less than 0.32, which indicated low precision, while the accuracy (Willmott's d) was greater than 0.50, except for Bangu station. The low precision compromised the performance (index “c”) of the simulations, with 0,07 £ c £ 0,42, classified as "terrible" and "bad". The RQME varied between 76.2 and 133.4 mm, which corresponded error of 78.1 and 115.5% in relation to mean precipitation. The simulations of air temperature showed better performance than precipitation, with greater precision (0.39 £ r² £  0.53), accuracy (0.50 £ d £ 0.79) and performance (0.36 £ c £ 0.52). The RQME was between 1.9 and 5.7oC, which represented respectively 9 and 26% for average of air temperature. In most stations, RQMEs were higher than the RQMEu, which indicated that simulators can be fitted using statistical techniques. Keywords: climate model, meteorological dataset, downscaling
