This literature review discusses the most frequently used serodiagnostic methods for the determination of the humoral immune response to malarial parasites. The importance of malaria as a global public health problem is stressed in the light of the new discoveries leading to the future development of an anti-malarial vaccine suitable for use in humans. Serological techniques are expected to play an important role in the assessment of the relative efficacy of these candidate vaccines. A discussion of the different antigen preparation techniques is also presented.

COVID-19 infection increases the risk of death in patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes or obesity. The exact role of vitamin D in COVID-19 infection is unknown and controversial. Furthermore, the exact prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is still unknown but it affects individuals worldwide regardless of ethnicity and age. Herein, we give an overview of vitamin D deficiency as a global public health problem, the role of vitamin D in COVID-19 infection, and the proper approach to treating vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract: Self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITB) are an enormous global public health problem. Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, and cross-national studies estimate that the prevalence of nonlethal SITBs ranges from 3% to 9%. This chapter focuses on the assessment of SITB in youth and adults. It begins with a review of the nature of the condition, which is followed by a review of clinical assessment instruments designed for the assessment purposes of (a) determining the presence and frequency of SITB, (b) case conceptualization and treatment planning, and (c) treatment monitoring and evaluation. Recommendations are included for instruments with the greatest scientific support and for assessing SITB in a clinically sensitive manner.
