Objective: This study was designed to determine the frequency and causative agent(s) of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in individuals with symptoms of urinary tract infections in Enugu State of Southeast Nigeria, and to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of microbial agents isolated from urine culture. Methods: The study involved 211 individuals (149 females and 62 males) clinically suspected for UTI. Urine samples were collected by the mid-stream ‘clean catch' method and tested using standard procedures. Antibiotic susceptibility of the isolated pathogens was tested using the Kirby-Bauer technique according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Results: Microscopy of centrifuged urine samples showed 16 patients had pyuria while 54 had pus cells. Calcium oxalate crystals were found in 14 samples. Urinalysis performed with urine samples showed 17 had protein; seven were nitrite positive and three had moderate to high glucose concentration. Fifty-four urine samples (36.2%) from females and 12 (19.4%) from males showed significant growth upon culture. Gram stain and biochemical tests identified nine different organisms with Escherichia coli as the most common isolated species. Forty three randomly selected strains were further tested for their susceptibility against a panel of antibiotics. Thirty isolates (81.08%) were resistant to four or more antibiotics with the highest resistance shown by E. coli (76.67%). All the Gram- negative isolates were resistant to Ampicilox, Cefuroxime and Amoxicillin. Conclusion: Urinary tract infections were found more in females in the area under study. As found in other studies, E. coli was the most predominant isolate, although other organisms seem to be on the increase.

Background: Emergence of multi-drug resistant uropathogenic E. coli strains is an increasing problem to empirical treatment of urinary tract infections in many countries. This study investigated the magnitude of this problem in Jordan. Methods: A total of 262 E. coli isolates were recovered from urine samples of Jordanian patients which were suspected to have urinary tract infections (UTIs). All isolates were primarily identified by routine biochemical tests and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by disc diffusion method. Fifty representative Multidrug Resistance (MDR) E. coli isolates to 3 or more antibiotic classes were tested for the presence of resistance genes of blaCTX-M- 1, 9 and 15, carbapenemase (blaIMP, blaVIM, blaNDM-1, blaOXA-48), fluoroquinolones mutated genes (parC and gyrA) and clone of ST131 type using PCR methods. Results: A total of 150/262 (57.3%) of E. coli isolates were MDR. Urine samples of hospitalized patients showed significantly more MDR isolates than outpatients. Fifty representative MDR E. coli isolates indicated the following molecular characteristics: All were positive for mutated parC gene and gyrA and for ST131 clone, and 78% were positive for genes of CTX-M-15, 76% for CTX-M-I and for 8% CTX-M-9, respectively. Additionally, all 50 MDR E. coli isolates were negative for carbapenemase genes (blaIMP, blaVIM, blaNDM-1, blaOXA-48), except of one isolate was positive for blaKPC-2 . Conclusion: This study indicates alarming high rates recovery of MDR uropathogenic E. coli from Jordanian patients associated with high rates of positive ST131 clone, fluoroquinolone resistant and important types of blaCTX-M.

Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are an increasing public health problem caused by a range of uropathogens. UTI is a major health concern among tribal women due to lack of adequate health facilities at regional public health centers and district hospitals. The objective of the study was to investigate the prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria isolated from urine samples of tribal women suffering from UTI. Urine samples were collected from 550 tribal women who visited the Outpatient Department (OPD) of the District Hospital of Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh, India. Methods: The samples were cultured on different selective and differential media and identified by colony morphology, Gram staining and biochemical tests. Results: Out of 550 urine samples, 360 (65.45%) were culture-positive and 190 (34.55%) were culture-negative. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli & Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been identified as major uropathogens. K. pneumoniae is the most prevalent bacteria followed by P. mirabilis, E. coli and P. aeruginosa. The drug sensitivity analysis of bacterial uropathogens was performed against different antibiotics. The antibiotic susceptibility profiling showed that most of the isolates of K. pneumoniae, P. mirabilis and E. coli were resistant against penicillin (86.67-100%) and rifampicin (72.73-97.67%). Conclusions: Gentamycin, kanamycin and streptomycin were the most active antibiotics against the isolates of P. aeruginosa (76, 80 and 76%), P. mirabilis (76.62, 66.23 and 75.32%), K. pneumoniae (55.81, 20.93 and 44.19%) and E. coli (50.48, 37.14 and 62.86%), respectively, and may be the drug of choice for treatment of UTI in this region at present.

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections. For treatment of UTIs, there are limited antibiotics due to increased resistance among uropathogens. Two older antibiotics; Nitrofurantoin and Fosfomycin have become novel oral therapeutic options against uropathogens. Aim of the study was to identify UTI causing micro-organisms and evaluate in-vitro activity of nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin against most common isolated organism (E. coli).Methods: Results of urine samples culture and susceptibility testing over a period of 1 year were analysed and included in this study.Results: Micro-organisms were isolated from 568 urine samples. Most commonly isolated organism was Escherichia coli (40.50%), followed by Klebsiella spp. (20.07%) and Staphylococcus spp. (17.07%). Susceptibility of E. coli to nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin was 91.74% and 65.65% respectively. Conclusion: Good activity of nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin against E. coli indicates that these two drugs are potential therapeutic alternatives for urinary tract infections.

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTI’s) define a condition in which urinary tract is infected with a pathogen causing inflammation. Urinary tract infections are one of the most prevalent infections affecting people of all age group from neonates to adults and are major cause of morbidity and several disorders in patients. In serious cases urinary tract infection lead to kidney failure, septicemia, bacterial endocarditis, prostatitis and infertility. Aim: The objective of this work was to the study the prevalence of urinary tract infections among patients of Ujjain and to identify prominent bacterial pathogens responsible for causing UTI. Methods: A total of 500 urine samples were collected aseptically and cultured on Blood agar and Mac’conkey agar. The bacterial isolates were identified based on their colony morphological characteristics, Gram stain reaction and their biochemical tests. Result: After overnight incubation a total of 307 out of 500 patients tested positive for UTI suggesting that (61%) of patients suffered from UTI infections. It was seen that (89%) of bacterial isolates causing UTI were Gram negative and (11%) were Gram positive. The identification of pathogens indicated that E. coli is most prevalent uropathogen followed by K. pneumonae, P. aeruginosa, E. faecalis, S. aureus and P.vulgaris. Conclusion: The study shows that prevalence of UTI is higher in females as compared to males. It was also been seen that UTI infections were prevalent in urban as well as in rural patients, however, the incidence of infection was slightly high in urban patients. This study is important as constant survey and identification of uropathogens is essential for effective treatment of UTI.

Background and Objectives: Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is one of the most common infections in the community and hospitalized patients. The aim of the present study was to investigate bacteria isolated from urinary tract infections and their antibiotic resistance in hospitalized patients. Subjects and Methods In the this descriptive-cross-sectional study, the results of about 5,000 urine samples sent for culture from the hospitalized patients of Golestan Hospital in Ahvaz in 2019 were examined. Relevant information was extracted from patients’ medical records. Results Out of 5000 samples studied (39.7% female and 60.3% male), about 468 samples (9.36%) showed positive urine culture. Of the patients with UTI, 205 patients were women (43.8%). The risk of UTI increased with age. The most common bacteria caused urinary tract infections were E. coli with 51.5%, followed by Klebsiella with 29.3%. It was also observed that bacteria isolated from urine samples of people with UTI had antibiotic resistance, and for each bacteria special groups of antibiotics were more effective. Conclusion The prevalence of UTI in the studied patients was 9.36%. In females and with increasing age, the prevalence of UTI was higher. The most common bacteria that caused UTI were E. coli and then Klebsiella. Due to the fact that the resistance and sensitivity of bacteria to antibiotic used, it is recommended that the most common bacterial agents of UTI must be diagnosed and then the most appropriate antibiotic must be prescribed

This study was designed to detect the presence of genes encoding autotranspoter proteins in E. coli that causes UTI by using PCR techniques. Seventy two urine sample were collected from patients infected with UTI whom attended to Salah-AL-deen general hospital in Tikrit city, during three months period (September to November 2016). All samples were cultivated on Blood agar and MacConkey agar. The 47(65.2%) E. coli isolates were confirmed using standard biochemical tests for E. coli. The results indicate the frequencies of Sat gene was 27 strains(57.5%) while Vat gene was 12 strains (25.5%) while the Duplex PCR detected 8(17%) strains of E. coli contained two genes. With this method, we confirmed that autotransporter genes are pathospecifically distributed among the E. coli strains studied.   http://dx.doi.org/10.25130/tjps.23.2018.167

<strong>Introduction:</strong> The urinary tract infections, after respiratory infections, are the most common in the community. The knowledge about the prevalence of microbial strains and their antibiotic susceptibility is crucial to establish an effective empirical therapy. The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of bacterial strains isolated from positive urine cultures performed in patients from the central region of Portugal.<br /><strong>Material and Methods:</strong> We carried out a documental analysis of 6008 urine bacteriological exams, to be made available to physicians, most of which run through the automated system VITEK 2, bioMérieux. The majority (80%) of the urine bacteriological exams were from female. Escherichia coli was the most prevalent bacterial pathogen (65.9%), followed by Klebsiella spp (12%).<br /><strong>Results:</strong> Nitrofurantoin showed high levels of activity (96%) for Escherichia coli, as well as Fosfomycin (96.6%). Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid presents an activity level of only 81.1% for the same germ. Quinolones exhibit efficacy to only 78% of the strains of Escherichia coli, below the Fosfomycin and Nitrofurantoin. Nitrofurantoin showed high levels of activity (96%) for E. coli as well as Fosfomycin (96.6%). Amoxicillin-Clavulanic Acid presents a level of activity of only 81.1% for the same germ. The quinolones have a efficacy for only 78% of strains of E. coli, lower than Fosfomycin.<br /><strong>Discussion:</strong> Escherichia Coli was the most prevalent uropathogen (65.9%). High efficacy against this pathogenic agent was found for Fosfomycin (96.6%) and Nitrofurantoin (96%).<br /><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Further antimicrobial surveillance studies should be developed, in order to formulate local empirical therapy<br />recommendations for optimized therapeutical choices.<br /><strong>Keywords:</strong> Urinary Tract Infections; Drug Resistance, Bacterial; Anti-Bacterial Agents; Community-Acquired Infections.<br />

Objective: The research was carried out with isolate and determines the antimicrobial sensitivity in E. coli from urinary tract infections in special hospital in Denizli and recorded at specimens. Methods: Urine samples (n=21) were collected from patients with signs and symptoms of Urinary tract infections. Bacteria were isolated and identified by conventional biochemical profile. Antibiotic resistance pattern of E. coli against different antibiotic was determined by Kirby-Baur method. Results: The results revealed that sensitivity rate of antimicrobial agents were in the range of meropenem (100%), norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin (86%), cefotaxime (80%), aztreonam (76%). None of the samples showed no resistance to amikacin, ceftazidime, aztreonam, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and meropenem. Out of 21 isolates, 3(14%) isolates showed Multiple Antibiotic Resistance ten to thirteen antibiotics. Conclusion: It is concluded that most of the urinary tract infections in human are caused by E.coli exhibited highest resistance to meropenem (100%), followed by norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin  (86%).

Urinary tract infections are the second common reason of medical consultations and antibiotics prescription. Escherichia coli is known to cause most urinary tract infections. The aim of this study was to characterize and determine the antibiotic resistance profile of E. coli extended-spectrum βlactamases (ESBL) producer strains isolated from urine samples. The urine samples collected came from hospitalized and non-hospitalized patient referred to Hubert Koutoukou Manga (HKM), National and University Hospital Center (Cotonou, Benin). The resistance to antibiotics was determined according to the disk diffusion method. The production of penicillinase and ESBLs was researched respectively by the acidimetric test and double disk synergy method. The presences of genes encoding βlactamases were detected by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Our data revealed that 60 % of E. coli strains (101) were isolated from female patients. Also, 69.31 % of the strains were isolated from non-hospitalized patients. The high resistance levels were recorded with amoxicillin (96.04 %) and amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (66.34 %). Twenty percent (20%) of strains were ESBLs. Among ESBLs strains, 70% comes from non-hospitalized patients. Eighty percent of E. coli strains produced penicillinase among which 25 % were ESBL producers. All the ESBL producers strains carried blaTEM gene whereas only 30 % carried the blaSHV gene. This study updates the data on the prevalence to antibiotic resistance of E. coli ESBL producers strains for better management of urinary tract infections.
