We study how to adapt to smoothly-varying (‘easy’) environments in well-known online learning problems where acquiring information is expensive. For the problem of label efficient prediction, which is a budgeted version of prediction with expert advice, we present an online algorithm whose regret depends optimally on the number of labels allowed and Q* (the quadratic variation of the losses of the best action in hindsight), along with a parameter-free counterpart whose regret depends optimally on Q (the quadratic variation of the losses of all the actions). These quantities can be significantly smaller than T (the total time horizon), yielding an improvement over existing, variation-independent results for the problem. We then extend our analysis to handle label efficient prediction with bandit (partial) feedback, i.e., label efficient bandits. Our work builds upon the framework of optimistic online mirror descent, and leverages second order corrections along with a carefully designed hybrid regularizer that encodes the constrained information structure of the problem. We then consider revealing action-partial monitoring games – a version of label efficient prediction with additive information costs – which in general are known to lie in the hard class of games having minimax regret of order T2/3. We provide a strategy with an O((Q*T)1/3 bound for revealing action games, along with one with a O((QT)1/3) bound for the full class of hard partial monitoring games, both being strict improvements over current bounds.

The transformation of learning from offline to online modes due to the Covid-19 pandemic has affected students’ self-endurance in learning and the complexities of learning problems. Accordingly, this study was oriented towards investigating IAIN Curup students’ self-endurance and the problems they faced during online learning. Grounded in a qualitative method, this study incorporated 20 IAIN Curup students selected purposively as the participants. They were interviewed on the basis of the study’s foci. The data of interviews were analyzed using an interactive model. The findings demonstrated weak students’ self-endurance in online learning. Psychologically, they felt under pressure. Physically, their eyes’ condition got worse, and a few of them suffered from headache. They were psychologically bored as well less-concentrated, and they could not enjoy learning due to the limitation of social engagement in learning. Subsequently, as regards the problems faced during online learning, they had problems related to Internet’s signals, budgeting for fulfilling Internet’s needs, and difficulty in the search of learning resources, wherein the foregoing was categorized as a case of weak technological competence.

This classroom action research (CAR) was conducted to increase student success in learning History with the Google Classroom (GC) application. The class as the subject is that of XI IPS-2 SMA Negeri 2 Tarakan, consisting of 36 students, with 19 male and 17 female students. They were chosen,  because the class saw a very large level of online learning problems such as: students often missed class, attended late, did not do assignments, did not have data packages so they did not participate in learning , and very passive learning activities. This research was conducted in two cycles, with  three meetings in each. It employed GC as the media to hold the learning process done online in the pandemic era. The results of the analysis has proved that the use of GC can help in improving student learning outcomes, based on all aspects of observation and action so that learning outcomes increase in each meeting and cycle. The learning outcomes in the first cycle showed 47.2%, while in the second cycle it increased to 83.3%. There were 5 students or 13.9% who had failed to reach the minimum completeness and a student was not present at the last meeting of the cycles. A remedial will be given in a separate meeting so that they can achieve the required mastery in learning. In short, learning with GC media can improve the results of learning history subject for the students in high school. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers or teachers be able to use GC in online learning.

By combining with sparse kernel methods, least-squares temporal difference (LSTD) algorithms can construct the feature dictionary automatically and obtain a better generalization ability. However, the previous kernel-based LSTD algorithms do not consider regularization and their sparsification processes are batch or offline, which hinder their widespread applications in online learning problems. In this paper, we combine the following five techniques and propose two novel kernel recursive LSTD algorithms: (i) online sparsification, which can cope with unknown state regions and be used for online learning, (ii)L2andL1regularization, which can avoid overfitting and eliminate the influence of noise, (iii) recursive least squares, which can eliminate matrix-inversion operations and reduce computational complexity, (iv) a sliding-window approach, which can avoid caching all history samples and reduce the computational cost, and (v) the fixed-point subiteration and online pruning, which can makeL1regularization easy to implement. Finally, simulation results on two 50-state chain problems demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, distance learning activities (PJJ) at all levels and levels of education, especially at the kindergarten level, experience various challenges and obstacles. Among the many teachers who experience distance learning difficulties because of their limitations in mastering online-based learning. Meanwhile, schools that are related to students' parents are their unpreparedness in assisting children in online-based learning. This condition makes online-based learning training for teachers and parents of students as one of the solutions in overcoming learning problems during the pandemic. This is the important meaning of service activities during a pandemic like it is today for teachers who are at the forefront of learning activities. The method in this service activity is carried out by means of training and mentoring. As a result, the participants were able to use various online learning applications. The implication obtained from this activity is the development of the application of educational technology in online-based learning activities for kindergarten teachers in Mranggen-Demak District.

<div>The random feature-based online multi-kernel learning (RF-OMKL) is a promising framework in functional learning tasks. This framework is necessary for an online learning with continuous streaming data due to its low-complexity and scalability. </div><div>In RF-OMKL framework, numerous algorithms can be presented according to an underlying online learning and optimization techniques. The best known algorithm (termed Raker) has been proposed with the lens of the famous online learning with expert advice, where each kernel from a kernel dictionary is viewed as an expert. Harnessing this relation, it was proved that Raker yields a sublinear {\em expert} regret bound, in which as the name implies, the best function is further restricted as the expert-based framework. Namely, it is not an actual sublinear regret bound under RF-OMKL framework. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm (named BestOMKL) for RF-OMKL framework and prove that it achieves a sublinear regret bound under a certain condition. Beyond our theoretical contribution, we demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm via numerical tests with real datasets. Notably, BestOMKL outperforms the state-of-the-art kernel-based algorithms (including Raker) on various online learning tasks, while having a lower complexity as Raker. These suggest the practicality of BestOMKL.</div>
