The use of semantic technologies including ontologies is a widespread practice in modern intelligent system engineering. Spreadsheets are one of the most accessible and common ways of representing and storing information which are characterized by a wide variety and heterogeneity of layouts, styles and content while remaining a valuable source of domain knowledge. The paper proposes to automate the process of ontology engineering based on the analysis and transformation of spreadsheets with an arbitrary layout. For this purpose a new approach is presented that provides the restoration of the semantics of tabular data, conceptualization, and formalization of tabular content in the form of ontology. The main stages of the proposed approach and a description of the software are presented. The developed software was used to solve the practical problem of ontology engineering for diagnosing and assessing the technical condition of petrochemical equipment. Spreadsheets extracted from reports on industrial safety inspection of petrochemical complexes were used as the initial data. Based on the results of approbation, it was concluded that it is advisable to use the proposed approach when prototyping subject ontologies.

Development and practical implementation of the enterprise industrial safety management system considering the new requirements of the legislation on creation of the state system for monitoring, remote control, technical certification, and diagnostics of technical devices at hazardous production facilities supervised by Rostechnadzor is discussed in the article. To perform automated collection, recording, generalization, systematization, and evaluation of the information on the parameters that characterize safety of the enterprise hazardous equipment as a whole and each technical device, a block diagram of the enterprise automated industrial safety management system is proposed. The basics are suggested for creating the automated system containing a database that includes all the technical documentation, certificates and expert opinions, repair documentation and accompanying documents (orders, instructions, audit conclusions, etc.) for the efficiency of tracking the technical condition in real time considering changes in all the controlled parameters of the enterprise technological complexes. It is noted in the article that the assessment of the technical condition and life of single and unique technical devices that make up the bulk of equipment in hazardous production should be carried out already at the manufacturing stage by combining technical control with technical diagnostics, and their results should be included in the technical passport of the device. The need in this information for the operators is invaluable, especially after working out the manufacturer’s designated period of safe operation and for evaluating the actual technical condition and comparing it with its original, which was documented during fabrication. Data on the initial state allows to qualitatively assess the degradation processes that are developing during operation and consider them when evaluating the life of a technical device and conduct a qualitative audit of the industrial safety management system.

Persistent Developmental Stuttering affects 1-2% of the world adult population. Its etiology is still unknown, although modern neuroimaging techniques have shown a new and exciting perspective of earlier ideas and hypotheses. However, it is now clear that a new approach to understand the true nature of the disorder is needed. We present a new etiological model of persistent developmental stuttering based on a deep analysis of earlier models and on the stuttering phenomenology, described in basic, clinical, and even ethnographic sources. One of the more stimulating conclusions has been the suggestion that stuttering is a non-speech based disorder, in opposition to the accepted belief. The implications of this model have guided the design of a new adaptive AAF device for prosthetic and therapeutic functions. It is supported by a wearable multimodal intelligent system, which evolves from a preliminary proposal presented in (Prado & Roa, 2007).

A number of methodologies are available in literature for ontology development but as the Ontology engineering field is relatively new, it is still unclear how the existing ontology building methodologies can be applied to develop semantic ontology models. In this work, firstly an overview of various ontology building methodologies and their limitations as compared to some standard software development methodologies are presented. Then the methodology proposed by Ushold and King is selected to build an ontology in e-banking domain. The challenge in this domain is to recognize, communicate and steadily improvise the banking solutions. The ontologies are prospective candidates to assist overcome these challenges and enhance interoperability of banking data and services. The study aims to provide direction for the application of existing ontology building methodologies in the Semantic Web Development processes of e-banking domain specific models which would enable their reusability and repeatability in other projects and strengthen the adoption of semantic technologies in the domain.

A crucial component of an intelligent system is its knowledge base that contains knowledge about a problem domain. Knowledge base development involves domain analysis, context space definition, ontological specification, and knowledge acquisition, codification and verification. Knowledge base anomalies can affect the correctness and performance of an intelligent system. In this chapter, we describe a fixpoint semantics for a knowledge base that is based on a multi-valued logic. We then use the fixpoint semantics to provide formal definitions for four types of knowledge base anomalies: inconsistency, redundancy, incompleteness, circularity. We believe such formal definitions of knowledge base anomalies will help pave the way for a more effective knowledge base verification process.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand genomics scientists’ perceptions in data quality assurances based on their domain knowledge. Design/methodology/approach – The study used a survey method to collect responses from 149 genomics scientists grouped by domain knowledge. They ranked the top-five quality criteria based on hypothetical curation scenarios. The results were compared using χ2 test. Findings – Scientists with domain knowledge of biology, bioinformatics, and computational science did not reach a consensus in ranking data quality criteria. Findings showed that biologists cared more about curated data that can be concise and traceable. They were also concerned about skills dealing with information overloading. Computational scientists on the other hand value making curation understandable. They paid more attention to the specific skills for data wrangling. Originality/value – This study takes a new approach in comparing the data quality perceptions for scientists across different domains of knowledge. Few studies have been able to synthesize models to interpret data quality perception across domains. The findings may help develop data quality assurance policies, training seminars, and maximize the efficiency of genome data management.

PurposeResearch of artificial intelligence (AI), has aimed at making machines intelligent via the simulation of natural intelligence, particularly human intelligence. During the past decades, there have been three major approaches aimed at achieving this goal, namely structuralism, functionalism and behaviorism. Unfortunately, they work separately and contradictorily to a large extent. The purpose of this paper is to present a better and more unified approach.Design/methodology/approachThe paper analyses each of the three major approaches to AI, describing their advantages and disadvantages. There then follows an attempt to explore a new and more reasonable approach to AI. The new approach should be able to solve all the problems that the existing approaches can solve on one hand and can solve the problems that the existing approaches cannot solve on the other hand.FindingsIt was found that the more reasonable and more powerful approach is the one that directly touches the common and core mechanism of intelligence formation. This is due to the fact that the mechanism of intelligence formation is much more essential than other windows of an intelligent system, such as structure, function, or behavior. It was also found that the common and core mechanism of intelligence formation can be implemented through the information‐knowledge‐intelligence transformation. The third finding is that the three existing approaches are special cases of the mechanism approach under different conditions and can thus be harmoniously unified within the frame of the mechanism approach.Originality/valueThe three findings in the paper: the mechanism approach, the implementation of the mechanism approach, and the unification of the existed three major approaches, are important laws never found before in the literature. The breakthrough of the mechanism approach to AI will be of great significance to both theoretical and practical research in AI in the years to come.
