e16731 Background: Locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) is usually treated with chemoradiotherapy with poor results, thus additional therapies have been proposed. Of the latter, electrochemotherapy (ECT) represents a non-thermal ablation method, which combines the administration of chemotherapeutic drugs with permeabilizing electric pulses for cell membrane electroporation. The present study is the first to assess the short and long-term results, and the quality of life of the patients who underwent ECT for LAPC. Methods: Observational study of patients affected by LAPC who underwent intraoperative ECT after chemoradiotherapy. The inclusion criteria were: 1- patients with LAPC (defined according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 2019), 2- previous chemoradiotherapy and 3- absence of disease progression at restaging. Data at diagnosis and at restaging were collected for each patient. The Quality of life was evaluated using the Euro Quality of Life Group Association Questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L). The questionnaire was administered to all patients before and after ECT. Results: From May 25, 2018 to November 26, 2019 five patients underwent ECT: in 4 cases, the tumors were located in the head and, in one, in the body of the pancreas. Preoperative chemotherapy consisted mainly of 6 cycles of modified folfirinox, while the radiotherapy consisted of 54 Gy (27 fractions). At restaging, the serum value of CA 19-9 and tumor size were reduced; however, the vascular involvement did not change. No downstaging was recorded. Intravenous bleomycin 15,000IU/m2 was given as a bolus, the ECT procedure was performed using at least 4 needles with a mean duration time of 27 minutes, (range 15-40). No postoperative mortality or major complications were reported. The mean length of stay was 8 days (range 5-14). Four patients were alive and well at the end of the study while one patient died from disease progression. The mean follow-up was 20.8 months (range 9-34) from diagnosis and 9.4 months (range 2-19) from ECT. The quality of life was good (EQ-5D-5L scale > 50 in all cases) and there was improvement in pain/discomfort with respect to the pre-treatment period in 3 out of 5 patients. Conclusions: Electrochemotherapy can be considered a simple, feasible and safe palliative additional treatment in LAPC without progression after chemoradiotherapy, and it seems to allow a good quality of life and pain improvement.

Background. Poststroke aphasia (PSA) is a disabling condition that decreases the quality of life, and the duration of the disease harms the quality of life of PSA patients. Acupuncture has been widely employed for PSA. There is some evidence for the immediate treatment efficacy of acupuncture for PSA; however, long-term results after acupuncture may be poorer. Methods. This is a multicentre, randomized, blinded, nonacupoint (NA) acupuncture controlled, multimodal neuroimaging clinical trial. A total of 48 subjects with subacute PSA will be randomly assigned to an acupoint group or an NA control group. The acupoint group will receive acupuncture with normal needling at DU20, EX-HN1, HT5, GB39, EX-HN12, EX-HN13, and CV23. The NA control group will receive acupuncture in locations not corresponding to acupuncture points as sham acupoints. Both groups will receive identical speech and language therapy thrice a week for four weeks. The primary outcome will be the change in the aphasia quotient (AQ) score measured by the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB) test during the 12th week after randomization. Participants will be blindly assessed at prerandomization (baseline) and 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks after randomization. The secondary outcomes include the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) score, the Disease Prognosis Scale score for ischaemic stroke, etc. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electroencephalogram (EEG) will also be performed at 4-time intervals as secondary outcomes. All scores and image evaluations will be taken at the same point as the linguistic evaluation. The multilevel evaluation technique will be used to assess the long-term efficacy of acupuncture therapy. MRI scans and EEG will be used to assess acupuncture-related neuroplasticity changes. Discussion. The results from our trial will help to supply evidence for the long-term acupuncture effects for PSA over a long follow-up period. It will provide valuable information for future studies in the field of PSA treatment. The trial was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry on 16 March 2020 (ChiCTR2000030879).

Abstract BACKGROUND Long-term regular physical activity, such as body practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine, seems to be an important habit for maintaining the functional fitness, independence and quality of life of elderly individuals. However, scientific knowledge production concerning assessment of such practices, specifically for the elderly population, focusing on functional fitness and quality of life, is still modest. Moreover, there is a lack of studies with long-term follow-up and control groups. Therefore, this study aims to compare the parameters of functional fitness and the dimensions of quality of life of elderly participants and non-participants in the body practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Longer adherence time, shorter adherence time and control group have been considered. METHODS This is an observational epidemiological case-control study carried out with 118 elderly individuals (≥ 60 years). The case group was represented by 59 elderly people practicing the body practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and they were subdivided into two groups, according to their median adherence time (< 24 months and ≥ 24 months). The control group was composed of 59 participants who were not participating in physical activity programs or guided body practices. Collection was carried out in four Traditional Medicine Specialized Units of the Municipal Health Office of the city of São Paulo. Sociodemographic and functional variables were collected. Quality of life was measured by Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). For data analysis, a univariate logistic regression and the Kruskal Wallis test have been performed. RESULTS When assessing quality of life, favorable results were found for the case group, with longer (≥ 24 months) adherence time in the domains of bodily pain (p = 0.003), vitality (p = 0.021), role emotional (p = 0.034), and mental health (p = 0.020). A better result was observed in the case group, with longer (≥ 24 months) adherence time in the functional 30-second chair stand test (p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS The body practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine can contribute to quality of life, functional fitness, and lower limb strength.

One of the most common benign hyperproliferative diseases of the female reproductive organs are uterine leiomyoma, the frequency of which, according to various literature in women of reproductive age is between 20% and 40%, and is the main indication for surgery, including removal of the organ. Long-term effects of surgical interventions for uterine fibroids have been the subject of numerous debates. In modern literature is not much research on the assessment of the quality of life both in organ treatment of uterine fibroids, and after surgical recovery. Quality of life have undoubtedly significant prognostic value and can be used in selecting the optimal treatment of uterine fibroids, as well as the development of individual approach to postoperative rehabilitation of patients. The objective: was the study of quality of life and the search for possible ways to improve in women after surgical healing uterine fibroids. Materials and methods. A survey of 80 women of reproductive age (study group), which was conducted without hysterectomy applications. Clinical and laboratory examination conducted in the dynamics of the postoperative period and at 6, 12 months and 3 years after surgical recovery. Assessment of comparative analysis require further formation of two groups comparing 20 patients with myoectomy and 20 women with no uterus amputation supravaginal applications. The control group consisted of 20 healthy patients. Assessment of quality of life survey conducted by using common clinical trials and monitoring at the individual questionnaire MOS 36- Item Short-Form Health Survey- MOS SF-36. Statistical analysis of the survey results was carried out using the software package Microsoft Office Excel and Statistica 6.0 for Windows. Results. In women, the main indicators of psycho-emotional and vegetative manifestations were most pronounced immediately after surgery and remained stable in three years with no significant deviations in the comparison group. Among the most frequently observed fatigue (76.25%), sleep disorders (88.75%), irritability and mood changes (76.25%) and emotional lability, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Of The results of evaluation of quality of life should be noted that first disturbed functioning role of women because of poor physical and emotional state, as evidenced by the significant differences obtained on the scale of General Health (GH) (overall health). Three years after the rapid improvement in women’s core group established stable condition posthisterektomy pronounced effect on quality of life. Thus, in total 33.75% of the principal groups characterized as low quality of life, compared with 5.0% of patients in the control group and 10,0% of women with myoectomy. Conclusions. The highest level of dissatisfaction with life studied patients presenting in health – 28.75% (23) cases, slightly less professional – 22.5% (18), emotional – 17.5% (17) and as in the sexual sphere – 13.75% (11) cases. That associated complications related symptoms posthisterektomy syndrome, increases the level of stress and hysterectomy as the body creates prerequisites for psychosomatic disorders. This action provides additional risk factors for the development of psychosocial distress in this group of patients. Key words: uterine fibroids, hysterectomy, posthisterektomy syndrome, psychosomatic disorders, quality of life.

Introduction. Demographic forecasts indicate the progressive aging process of societies in all countries worldwide. The extension of life span may be accompanied by deterioration of its quality resulting from a decrease in physical activity, mental or even social performance, and a deficit in certain chemical compounds responsible for proper functioning of the body. Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of a 12-week Nordic walking (NW) training intervention on the level of vitamin D in the blood and quality of life among women aged 65–74 years. Materials and methods. The study comprised 37 women aged 65–74 (x = 68.08, SD = 4.2). The subjects were randomly assigned to 2 groups: experimental group (NW), which consisted of 20 women who underwent an intervention in the form of Nordic walking training for 12 weeks, and the control group (C), including 17 women who underwent observation. In the experimental group, training sessions were held 3 times a week for 1 h. At that time, the C group was not subject to any intervention. The SF−36 questionnaire was used to measure quality of life. Vitamin D was assessed based on the results of biochemical blood tests. The analysed parameters were assessed twice-before and after the completed intervention or observation. Results. Comparison of the results regarding trials 1 and 2 allowed to note statistically significant improvement in quality of life for all health components and factors in the NW group. Analysis of vitamin D levels demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the NW group. In group C, no significant changes in the analysed parameters were observed. Conclusions. Regularly undertaking Nordic walking training significantly influences the improvement of self-evaluation regarding the components of physical and mental health, as well as the concentration of vitamin D in women aged 65–74 years.

BACKGROUND: One of the effective and pathogenetically substantiated methods of therapeutic action on cicatricial changes in the skin are laser technologies in combination with collagenases. However, as previous studies have shown, the presence of metabolic syndrome in patients significantly reduces the clinical efficacy of the combined use of laser therapy and phonophoresis of Fermencol. The most reasonable solution in this situation can be scientific research and experience in the practical use of drinking mineral waters, which have a high corrective efficiency in relation to metabolic processes, the course of which is significantly impaired in type II diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. AIMS: Assessment of clinical indicators of cicatricial changes in the skin of patients with metabolic syndrome in the combined application of the method of phonophoresis Fermenkol, fractional photothermolysis and drinking mineral waters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 60 patients (49 men and 11 women) with cicatricial changes in the skin aged 19 to 50 years, with a confirmed diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. All patients by the method of simple fixed randomization were divided into two groups: the control group (30 people) and the main group (30 people). Both groups received treatment, which included a course of phonophoresis of 0.01% Fermencol gel in combination with the technique of fractional laser therapy. Patients of the main group, in contrast to the control group, in addition to the specified physiotherapeutic treatment received bottled sodium bicarbonate-chloride water Essentuki No. 17 (mineralization 11.8 g/l) at room temperature, 200250 ml three times a day for 1520 minutes before meals for 3 weeks. RESULTS: The addition of physiotherapeutic combined anti-scar therapy with a course of drinking mineral water Essentuki No. 17 in patients with cicatricial changes in the skin in combination with metabolic syndrome was accompanied by a significantly more pronounced clinical effect, assessed by the Vancouver scale and the Dermatological Index of Quality of Life. CONCLUSION: Additional course use of drinking mineral water Essentuki No. 17 is accompanied by a more pronounced dynamics of clinical manifestations of cicatricial deformities of the skin and an indicator of the quality of life of patients, due to the sanogenetic mechanisms of the drinking balneofactor.

Hydropinotherapy is a salus per aquam (Spa) treatment suitable as a complementary approach to treat several diseases, which strongly affect the quality of life (QoL). Hydropinotherapy with sulphurous mineral water exerts benefits thanks to components, such as hydrogen sulphide, which is considered mainly responsible for antioxidant and hypoglycaemic effects. Such properties, linked from each other, could favour an improvement in patients’ QoL. However, data on humans are scarce. This study aimed to investigate whether a cycle of sulphurous hydropinotherapy was able to modify plasma levels of glucose and reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) and improve QoL in patients suffering from several chronic disorders. A prospective, observational study involved patients with gastrointestinal diseases who received a prescription of a cycle of sulphurous hydropinotherapy (S-HT). Age- and sex-matched control group was enrolled (No S-HT). Glycaemia and plasma concentration of ROMs were measured in all subjects. The impact of spa treatment on the QoL was assessed using the Short Form 36 Health Status Survey questionnaire (SF-36). All parameters were measured at baseline and at the end of a 2-week treatment. Between the groups, no differences were found in glycaemia and ROMs at baseline. In the S-HT group, a reduction in glycaemia and ROMs, both in respect to baseline (p = 0.005 and p = 0.031, respectively) and to control group, as shown by the delta value calculated, as the difference between the values at 2 weeks and baseline (p = 0.0009 and p = 0.0001, respectively). In the S-HT, delta ROMs was the best predictor of delta glycaemia with a direct linear correlation (beta = 0.559, 95% CI 0.471 to 0.647, p < 0.0001). In the S-HT, the SF-36 total score was improved both when compared with baseline (p = 0.002) and with No S-HT (p = 0.001). Sulphurous hydropinotherapy induces a decrease in glycaemia and ROM levels, also ameliorating the patients’ QoL. Therefore, it could be considered a useful complementary therapeutic approach.

Abstract Objective: to evaluate oxidative stress and non-enzymatic antioxidant defenses in informal caregivers, and correlations with anxiety, health satisfaction and quality of life. Method: a case-control analytical study was performed, where the case was represented by the main informal caregiver and the control was paired with individuals with identical characteristics to the case, but who were not informal caregivers. The following instruments were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Beck anxiety scale and the WHOQoL-Bref. Oxidative stress was measured through blood by analysis of the Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP) and Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) markets. Results: most informal caregivers were females. There was no difference in the degree of anxiety between the Case and Control groups. Among informal caregivers, 9.4% said they were very dissatisfied and 53.1% dissatisfied with their health. Most caregivers (43.8%) rated their quality of life as poor and 12.5% as very poor, while most controls rated it as good (68.8%). The TBARS and FRAP values were lower in the Case group than in the Control group. Conclusion: The informal caregivers, who were mostly women, defined themselves as dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their health. Nevertheless, they did not manifest a higher degree of anxiety in comparison with the control population. In addition, they presented a lower degree of oxidative stress than the non-caregiving participants, perhaps due to a greater mobilization of the non-enzymatic antioxidant defenses present in the body.
