The objective of this study is to analyze the perception of Comorian citizens facing the situation of solid waste management (SWM). For this, a qualitative and quantitative approach is conducted on a sample of 300 households. The study shows that 61.1% of households freely dispose a waste on sensitive sites, 19.7% bring waste to collection points and 18.6% benefit from door-to-door. Moreover, 63% of households prefer door-to-door as a means of waste disposal compared to 19.5% who prefer voluntary intake and 17.5% prefer free evacuation. Home sorting concerns only 19.3% of households compared with 80.7% whose dispose mixed waste. Households that are aware of the negative impact of waste on health are 87.5%, against 5%, are unconscious and 7.5% remain without opinion. The study also shows that 40% of households are aware of the negative impact of waste on the environment, against 33% of non-conscious and 27% of non-opinion. The majority of households (58%) are unsatisfied of waste collection services schedules. However, 93.3% of households approve actions carried out by NGO and association. A financial contribution for waste management system improvement of 0.54 USD and 1.08 USD per month was approved by 67% of households.

Solid waste management is the process of collecting and treating solid wastes. It also offers solutions for recycling items that do not belong to garbage or trash. Reducing and eliminating the adverse impact of waste materials on human health and the environment supports economic development. Quality of life is the primary goal of solid waste management. To ensure environmental best practices, content or hazard potential and solid waste must be managed systematically, and it is needed to be incorporated into ecological planning. This study aimed to assess Bonbon, Clarin, Bohol residents towards the proper implementation of solid waste management. The quantitative-descriptive method of research was used with the aid of a modified standardized survey questionnaire. The data showed that mothers or married respondents aged 21-30 got the highest percentage. Therefore, it shows that they are the ones primarily in charge of household waste management. The Assessment of the implementation of Solid Waste Management was conducted per dimension: Planning and Control, Zero Waste Collection Service, and Waste Disposal System. According to the results, the dimension of Planning and Control was labeled as Strongly Implemented, Zero Waste Collection Service was marked as Moderately Implemented, and Waste Disposal System was categorized as Moderately Not Implemented. Therefore, it shows that the Solid Waste Management in Bonbon, Clarin, Bohol was moderately implemented. Thus, the study's outcome served as a guide to enhance their best practices for the full implementation and sustainability of solid waste management in their locality.

The waste management strategy is expected to minimize the negative impact on the environment. In the capital city of Dili, the waste management strategy can be categorized as very concerned. Based on the data from the Ministry of State Administration shows that in 2020, people in the capital of Dili produce waste 250 tons per day. The reality of solid waste in the capital city of Dili shows a severe problem in the waste management process and strategy. This study aims to examine problems in waste management strategies and their impact in the capital city of Dili. Through a literature review approach, a scientific study will be carried out on several scientific articles related to the waste management system and the reality of solid waste in capital city of Dili. The results show that people in the capital of Dili, still use the classical system in managing solid waste. Weak government system and local regulations regarding to solid waste management, and the lack of the waste management industry based on R3 (reduce, reuse, recycle) are the main factors for the community still using the classical system. This reality harms the environment and people in the capital of Dili.

One of the most urgent environmental problems today is the pollution of the environment by emissions of harmful substances and industrial waste. The negative impact on the environment and people is becoming more widespread, and its disposal methods inhibit the development of the economic system. In a market economy, entrepreneurs are not interested in increasing environmental costs, which naturally lead to higher production costs and reduce profits. The impact on the environment is becoming more widespread every year and has led to an ecological crisis in some parts of the world. Waste recycling has been constantly discussed since a person “produces” more than 250 kg of household waste per year. At the enterprise, these figures reach 10 000 kg. In recent years, Ukraine has imported about 30-50 thousand tons of PET granulate, which is gradually accumulating in landfills in the form of packaging, bottles, films. Such hazardous pollutants affect the environment through soil and water. In contrast, Ukraine does not yet have successful experience in waste management. In our opinion, such behavior is the ignorance of the population about waste disposal and replacement of a particular product with a more environmentally friendly one. The functioning of enterprises and farms does not always have the equipment to dispose of waste, and there is no room for the disposal of unnecessary products and raw materials. However, the problem of lack of innovative equipment arises due to a lack of adequate funding. Therefore, the lack of possibilities for a comprehensive solution to the situation creates a barrier, which does not allow to take proper measures to eliminate and reduce the amount of garbage. Despite many regulations and legal frameworks for regulating waste management, there is no cost-effective policy, and there is no regional waste management program and plan for their proper disposal. It can be concluded that the recycling and disposal of waste will reduce the need for waste incineration, create conditions for improving the economic component of the region and the country as a whole with an account of environmental quality standards. The paper pays attention to the essence of waste disposal; identified ways to recycle garbage.

Abstract The removal of solid household waste to landfills is the most commonly used method of solid waste disposal and an important source of environmental pollution. Physical, chemical and biochemical processes occur in the body of a solid waste dump, which overlap each other and form an artificial aquifer and biogas. This article provides a brief overview of the environmental problems associated with the practice of garbage disposal and the negative impact of the landfill on the environment. The data on the features of the functioning of the solid waste landfill in Kaluga, on the dynamics of waste generation and changes in their morphological composition are presented. The issues related to the economic problems of waste disposal are considered.

Abstract One of the problems that are faced by the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) is the amount of solid waste generated each year, add the increasing number of the student each year, then the problem becomes much worse and difficult to handle. Regarding it, the awareness of each student about solid waste management is needed. The 2 main purpose of this study is first to determine the composition and the generation of solid waste using the samples taken from 10 temporary solid waste dumps (FPSB, D3 Economics, FMIPA, FTI, FIAI, FTSP, FK, Central Library, Kahar Muzakir, GKU, and Rectorate) and the second is to identify student’s perceptions and behavior about individual solid waste management. The research was conducted using qualitative and quantitative descriptive approaches. The results show that the average amount of solid waste generated is 0.017 kg/person/day this is in line with the solid waste management record that shows that on daily basis each person produces approximately 0.010 - 0.020 kg. While the study about the students’ perceptions and behavior towards solid waste management shows that while most of the students are aware of it, the implementation is still lacking.

The problem of coverage of the population by services of waste removal in the cross section of regions and the connection of this indicator with economic and social aspects of human activity has been considered. The regions are compared, the dynamics of changes of the index by years is analyzed. The dependence of coverage of services on the number of employees in the field of waste management and on the level of financing of the sphere of waste management is analyzed. These figures are found to vary significantly and there is no correlation between the number of employees or the amount of waste management system financing and the increase in the level of service provision in the region. The reasons, of the imperfections of the household waste system collection and removal are identified. The importance of correctly determining the level of waste collection services coverage for the proper waste collection subsystem organization is characterized. The study of correlation between indices of human development in the countries of the world and the index of coverage of the population by services for removal of household waste is conducted. It is found that there is a direct correlation between the indicators for individual countries. Based on the obtained model, the validity of the indicator for the regions of Ukraine is analyzed. It is determined that the values of the population coverage of waste collection for the regions do not fit into the model obtained. Assumptions have been made about the inaccuracy of public data on waste collection services in the regions of Ukraine. Waste management system in the regions of Ukraine, in particular with regard to waste collection, is currently characterized by the imbalance of development and insufficient accuracy of the indicators, and needs concerted action and measures to optimize it to ensure proper collection of municipal waste at the regional level, as well as to create an effective information and analytical system to monitor the state of the household waste management system. It is concluded that the improvement of the waste collection system should be one of the highest priorities at the local level to reduce the risk of negative impact on human life and health, the environment, etc.

Solid waste management has remained a major problem in most developing nations, Nigeria inclusive thus posing serious public health issues to those living around such solid waste dumpsites. This study was conducted in Aba dumpsite to investigate the residents’ awareness, knowledge, attitude and practice on the solid waste disposal practices and its effect consequences towards human intestinal parasite. A structured questionnaire was administered to elicit the resident responses on their knowledge, attitude and practices towards solid waste disposal and human intestinal parasites. In the study, majority of the residents’ were male 296(70.0%), and 127(30.0%) were females. Most of them 103(24.3%) were of the age group 11 – 20years, then 93(22.0%) 0 – 10 years, 84(19.9%) 21 – 30 years, 75(17.7%) 31–40years, 41(9.7%) and 27(6.4%) were 51 and above. Majority 155(36.6%) of the residents’ attended Primary education, 123(29.1%) Secondary education, 78(18.4%) Polytechnics, and 41(9.7%) University while 26(6.1%) had no educational qualification. Most of the residents 121(28.6%) have stayed less than 9 years while 85(20.1%) have stayed less than 6 years. Most of the respondents 159(37.6%) resides closer to the dumpsite while 37(8.7%) are farther apart. Analysis of the questionnaire revealed that majority (87.5%) of the residents are aware that they are at risk of contracting human intestinal parasite for living close to the site. Most 365(86.3%) know that intestinal parasites can be contracted through poor hygiene. Majority 197(46.6%) dispose waste at the dumpsite daily. Most of the respondents 216(51.1%) disagreed to the fact that wastes at the site are managed regularly. Majority 329(77.8%) agreed that one can get the parasites from dumpsite. The dumpsite workers strongly agreed 11(78.6%) that increase in industrialization and consumption of fresh raw was the major factor militating them against their level of efficiency in the management of waste at the dumpsite. Wastes not properly managed have a negative impact on health, environment and aesthetic values. A well-planned waste management and proper health education programme for residents living around the dumpsite will go a long way in reducing the potential of epidemic risks posed by dumpsites in Aba municipal.

The paper examines the waste management issues in the villages annexed to administrative-territorial units of the Romanian cities which have been frequently neglected by urban waste operators. The lack of waste collection services in such peri-urban communities favored the illegal waste disposal practices particularly prior to EU accession. The extension of waste collection services from main cities to such areas is compulsory in order to mitigate the environmental risks and the public health threats. The paper estimates the amounts of household waste susceptible to be uncontrolled disposed of by peri-urban villages in different geographical areas of North-East region with a particular focus on Neamt county. The paper points out that these rural settlements should receive the same attention concerning the municipal waste management services as the main urban areas. Traditional recovery of waste fractions at the household level (e.g., home composting) should be further promoted in such areas in order to avoid illegal dumping issue and to prevent the landfill of biodegradable waste as requested by EU regulations.

Insufficient staff, inappropriate collection vehicles, limited operating budgets and growing, hard to reach populations mean that solid waste management remains limited in most developing countries; Malawi is no exception. We estimated the willingness to pay (WTP) for two hypothetical solid waste collection services. Additionally, we tested the impact of the WTP question positioning relative to environmental perceptions on respondents’ WTP. The first scenario involved a five minute walk to a disposal facility; the second scenario involved a 30 min walk. Additionally, the order of the question was randomized within the questionnaire. A WTP value of K1780 was found for the five minute walk scenario when the question was placed first, and K2138 when placed after revealing the respondent’s perceptions on the environment. In the 30 min walk scenario, WTP was K945 when placed first and K1139 when placed after revealing the respondent’s perceptions on the environment. The estimated values indicate that there is both a willingness to pay for solid waste services and that there are at least two options that would be acceptable to the community; a pilot scale implementation would be required to validate the hypothetical values, especially given the dependency on problem framing. Community financing should be considered as a sustainable approach to solid waste management in underserved areas.

Communities store a potential power to support overall performance of urban solid waste management through various creative and innovative arrangements. In Indonesia, the Rukun Warga (RW) is the lowest hierarchy of community organizational system which can implement creative and innovative arrangements to support solid waste management activities with less financial requirement. This study observed RW-based activity on fifty RWs with 412 respondents in terms of 3Rs, household waste separation, waste recycling business and waste bank system undertaken by the community for the sake of cleanliness and income-earning. The result shows that the correlation between level of the activity of the RWs communities in undertaking 3Rs, recycling business and waste bank, and the perceived cleanliness by the community members was validated. It is also showed positive results such as improved urban environment and provided strong push-factor influencing the community members to join the movement and the activities towards sustainable solid waste management are not always cost-intensive activities but a socially bounded engagement would also workable.
