It is evident from the PISA 2018 results that a trend in mean performance in reading has been declining in the Slovak Republic. The KEGA Project “Idioms in Business Communication”, run at the Department of English Language, aims at improving reading literacy, widening formal and informal vocabulary and facilitating business communication. Both traditional and modern styles of language teaching are used. The control group of students does a traditional course and the experimental group of students enrols in a “Business Communication” e-course on LMS Moodle platform, as well. With the use of the Internet and supporting materials, this group is involved in various activities. The paper compares the study results of 144 first-year and 97 second-year students of the University of Economics in Bratislava achieved in departmental standardised business English tests after completing three courses in business English for advanced students. The method of Hypothesis Testing (t-Test) assesses the significance of the difference between the levels of knowledge of both groups. The research findings prove that the experimental group of students achieved better results in final evaluation than the control group of students. The results also confirm that an alternative form of business English teaching was effective.

This study explored the effect of active learning on developing imagination skills among students with learning disabilities in English language in Irbid city, Jordan. The study used the experimental approach and was applied to a sample of 60 female and male students, who were chosen purposefully. The sample was divided into two groups, an experimental, which was taught using the active learning method, and a control group, which was taught according to the traditional method. The results revealed the existence of significant differences between the performance of the experimental group and the control group on the post-imagination test in favor of the experimental group. The findings also showed statistically significant differences between the scores of the two study groups on the post-imagination test due to the gender variable, and the difference was in favor of males. In light of the findings of the study, the researcher recommended preparing training programs on active learning and preparing a guide for teachers, which can be used to teach and learn reading, writing, and imagination skills in the basic stage.

This study aims to observe the effectiveness of therapy of reflective-intuitive reading of Al-Fatihah in reducing the depression of autoimmune survivors. It used the quasi-experiment with the pre-test-posttest control group design – not non-randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects involved in this study were the female Moslems becoming the survivors of one of the autoimmune diseases. Here, the level of depression of the subject was measured using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) sub-test of depression developed by Lovibond and Lovibond, adapted into the Indonesian language. The implementation of the therapy refers to the module of reflective-intuitive reading of Al-Fatihah developed by the researcher and team by referring to the module owned by Maulana, Subandi and Astuti. Data analysis used the Mann Whitney U-Test to determine the difference in the depression level in the experimental group before and after the intervention compared to the control group. The study results showed that therapy of reflective-intuitive reading of Al-Fatihah effectively reduced the level of depression of autoimmune survivors after passing the changing process taking a particular time.

This article presents the results of the research aimed at proving the efficiency of using the simulation method in combination with the cognitive linguistic approach in teaching students a foreign language. The experimental group students studied the foreign (English) language course during the semester of the 2019-2020 academic year using simulations. The methodology consisted of the performance of roles by the students who actively interacted for the implementation of assigned tasks. Kravchenko's cognitive linguistic algorithm was used to develop the skills of English grammar. This allowed us to establish the similarities between the temporal forms of English and Ukrainian words in discourse. The efficiency was evaluated through the test, developed by the author based on the exercises from the book by Holitsynskyi. Diagnostics of the students' level of motivation to learn a foreign language using simulations and cognitive linguistic approach was performed with the help of the Self-Assessment Form Student test, described in the EU manual. The statistical significance of the study results was established using Pearson's χ2 test. The correlation between the factor and resultant characteristics was established using Tschuprow's contingency coefficient. This was revealed through the methodology of applying the cognitive linguistic approach regarding the training of the skills in choosing the tense forms of a verb in English and the method of simulations in the development of language competencies of the business foreign language. It was found that the proportion of experimental group students with a high and sufficient level of success in learning a foreign language doubled, exceeding the same indicator in the control group. The total number of students with very high, high and average levels of development of skills in choosing the tense forms of the verb in English increased by 36%.  The influence of the skills of choosing the tense forms of the verb on the development of the skills of using grammatical structures found in the process of the simulation was recorded. The results of the study can be applied in teaching students a foreign language in the institutions of higher and secondary education, as well as in the system of post-graduate education. The problems of individual students' passivity regarding their participation in simulations, failure to use a foreign language in group work require further research.   Received: 19 March 2021 / Accepted: 20 May 2021 / Published: 8 July 2021

Abstract This study aimed at investigating the impact of KWL strategy (Know – Want to Know-Learned)in developing Palestinian eleventh graders’ reading comprehension and their attitudes towards learning English language. The researchers adopted the experimental approach on a sample of (64) male students from the scientific stream at Al Manfalouti Secondary School for Boys, who were randomly selected from the population of (968) students enrolled in the scientific stream in the Middle-Area Directorate of Gaza, for the school year 2013-2014. The participants were divided into two equivalent groups: one as a control group which consists of (32) students and the other as an experimental one which consists of (32) students. The researchers used the KWL strategy in teaching the experimental group, while the traditional method was used in teaching the control one. The researchers used three instruments to achieve the study aims: 1) a checklist for teachers to determine the five most important reading comprehension skills, 2) a pre and post reading comprehension test, and 3) a pre and post attitude scale towards English language. The experiment lasted for six weeks (2 lessons per week) in which the researchers implemented the study tools on both the control and experimental groups to investigate the effect of KWL strategy. The study results indicated that there were significant differences in the mean scores of the experimental group and that of the control group in the post reading comprehension achievement test in favor of the experimental group attributed to the effectiveness of KWL strategy. Additionally, the study results revealed that there were statistically significant differences in the mean scores of the experimental group and that of the control group in the post application of the attitude scale towards learning English in favor of the experimental group attributed to the effectiveness of KWL strategy. In the light of those findings, the study recommended that curriculum designers and decision makers should consider strategies such as KWL strategy to activate students’ prior knowledge while building the curriculum activities. The study also recommended that Palestinian English language supervisors should hold training courses to motivate the use of innovative strategies like KWL strategy to develop teacher’s abilities in teaching English.
