In this study, functionalized-MWCNTs with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) loaded titania nanoparticles (MWCNTs-APTES-TiO2) were prepared to investigate their physicochemical properties and photocatalytic activity for methyl orange (MO) degradation. The TiO2 nanoparticles, functionalized-MNCNT and composite powders were characterized by XRD, raman, and TEM. The results obtained proved that titania (TiO2) nanoparticles was successfully loaded on APTES-MWCNTs. The best photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange solution under UV light irradiation was recorded over MWCNTs-APTES-TiO2 (1:2), with 87% after 180 min. Kinetic analysis indicated that photocatalytic degradation of MO solution by MWCNTs-APTES-TiO2 obeyed second-order kinetic model (R2 > 0.95), supported by half-life equations and graph. The presence of carbon nanotubes accelerated the degradation of methyl orange due to inhibition of electron-hole recombination, the formation of additional hydroxyl radicals and functional groups of the latter had an inhibitory effect on the degradation of methyl orange. This study shows that the MWCNTs-APTES-TiO2 nanocomposites exhibit promising photocatalytic degradation against methyl orange.

Composites of Sm doped TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed on carbon nanofibers (Sm-TiO2/CNFs) with different Sm contents were prepared by preoxidation, hydrolyzation and calcination of Sm-TiO2 precursor/PAN nanofibers. The characterizations of SEM, EDX, XPS and XRD showed that the CNFs surface was loaded by Sm-TiO2 nanoparticles with a uniform size of about 10nm, existing as anatase. It was concluded from XPS results that Ti element exist as Ti4+ and Sm doping increased the content of absorbed oxygen in composites. The effect of Sm doping on the photocatalytic activity of the Sm-TiO2/CNFs composite was investigated by the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange aqueous solution under UV irradiation. It was found that Sm doping could improve the photocatalytic property of Sm-TiO2/CNFs effectively compared with the undoped specimen, and the photocatalytic activity of the Sm-TiO2/CNFs samples enhanced firstly and then reduced with Sm content increasing.

ZnO treated at 200 °C offered high photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (99%) in a short time (90 min). The activity can be attributed to several factors including low crystallite size, high band gap energy and porosity.

ZnO and a series of Ag/ZnO photocatalysts were prepared by a precipitation- irradiation method and their photocatalytic performance in photodegradation of methyl orange dye was evaluated. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by various characterization techniques. The photocatalysts have a hexagonal phase and were highly agglomerated. TEM images showed a change in morphology of ZnO from rod to nearly spherical with the addition of Ag. Ag/ZnO catalysts exhibited better photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methyl orange compared to pure ZnO. Ag/ZnO contains 2% silver shows the best performance as photocatalyst.

As the need to use green chemistry routes increases, environmentally friendly catalytic processes are a demand. One of the most important and abundant naturally occurring catalysts is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the first recognized catalyst; it is a reducing agent due to its electron-rich structure. The effects of spinach on the preparation of zinc oxide nanoparticles and the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange and paraquat in sunlight and under a UV lamp and photocatalytic degradation in sunlight were studied. Different parameters of the catalytic preparation process and photocatalytic degradation process were studied. Characterization of differently prepared samples was carried out using different analytical techniques such as XRD, SEM, and EDX and finally the photocatalytic activity towards decomposition of methyl orange and paraquat.

The role of CuO as a co-catalyst was studied on plasmonic photocatalysis of Ag/AgCl/TiO2, and it was found that the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange and phenol under visible light was highly enhanced when CuO was incorporated into Ag/AgCl/TiO2.
