Most engineering students today lack content in their subjects (technical & non-technical) and are unable to perform in the job place because of their haziness. Reports say that a majority of the engineering graduates in our nation find themselves extremely difficult to seek employment opportunities. These Engineering graduates lack content along with required skills for right employment. To improve the content and confidence, there exists a need for integrating quality into the technical education system especially in the English language laboratory because every aspect of employment process includes good communication skills. Laboratory is the only platform where a student can learn and improve many things within the academic schedule.

The statistics of the AICTE reveals the facts that, with over 3,000 colleges in the nation churning out 14 lakh graduates annually, there tends to occur a dip in quality that can be overcome only with the parallel increase of facilities amongst other factors. To bring about well-rounded graduates with the right technical and language competence, colleges must adopt student-centered method of learning which should aim at developing learner autonomy and independence.

Communication skills and soft skills is one of the prerequisite needs for employment and placements in present day scenario and mastery over the language prompts visibility, leading to better job opportunities. For advancement in career and academics, English language skills, fluency, vocabulary and the art of narration whether oral or written play a pivotal role. Exposure and access to English language leads to acceptance, recognition and better opportunities. For Engineering students, courses like Professional communication or communication skillsarea skill based and value addition course usually taught by Humanities and social sciences department to inculcate and nurture good communication competency among the technical students. Although technical students primarily focus more on their technical expertise, the need for improvising their communication to foster employability during placements is inadvertently realized. However, although Indian students spend almost twelve years of learning English before entering higher education, yet it is observed by recruitment bodies that students fail to articulate their thoughts in the right manner, thus failing to fetch the right jobs. There is some lacuna in our teaching learning methodologies which needs to be seriously addressed. Hence this article analyses these lacunas and explores newer methods and strategies which would be potentially beneficial to achieve communicative competency to seek better employment and thereby bridge the gap between industry and academia.

The globalization of world markets which has led to the hegemony of English language over other languages requires graduates from different fields of specialization to equip themselves with English communication skills to communicate effectively in local and international workplace contexts. This study was conducted to investigate the English speaking skills needed by engineering students in the Kwara states of Nigeria. A survey was carried out to compare how the respondents’ (undergraduate engineering students and industry workers in the Kwara State of Nigeria) self-rated their speaking interaction and production skills and to observe their perception of the importance of speaking interaction and production sub skills for workplace communication. The study concluded with suggestions for creating a better perception of the importance of English speaking skills among engineering students and creating a better workplace English curriculum so that students’ workplace speaking skills can be improved.

The proficiency in English language has become a necessity in the modern world. The competency of using the language efficiently lies in the right choice of words. Learning words and improving vocabulary skills have become peremptory among the tertiary level students that they cannot exempt themselves from learning it. A large vocabulary collection allows the students to regulate and organise their thoughts with clarity. In order to facilitate effective use of words, many techniques, approaches and strategies have been devised by teacher-researchers to help the learners not only in acquiring wide vocabulary but also to have active vocabulary. Authors on realizing the importance of facilitating tertiary level engineering students not only to acquire wider vocabulary but also make them to understand, retain and use the learnt word appropriately have attempted to use cognitive learning activities in classroom. The paper registers methods and implications of cognitive learning activities on enhancing vocabulary of a set of 55 engineering college students. According to oxford English dictionary, Cognition is "the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses". This brings about many aspects such as attention, memory, reasoning, problem solving, decision making and production of language. The ultimate aim of incorporating cognitive learning approach through learning activities in a classroom gears up them to remember, understand, retain, apply, evaluate, and create. The researcher tried to bring out the classroom learning activities that enabled the students to develop learning strategies that instigates autonomous learning.

The aim of this paper is to consider project based learning as one of the most efficient and productive methods used in teaching English as a foreign language to engineering students of Russian technical universities. Special emphasis is put on communication skills to be mastered by future engineers through project based learning. It is of great importance to note that highly developed oral and written communication skills are valuable for engineering students wishing to become successful and competitive in the international arena. Hence, engineering students must be trained well to develop their communication skills in English in the field of professional activity, mainly in the science research area. An inter-disciplinary project designed on the basis of project based learning for the second year students of Tomsk Polytechnic University is reviewed in this work. The authors come to the conclusion that project based learning is an ideal teaching method since it allows engineering students to improve significantly their oral and written communication skills as well as apply the content knowledge in the field of their professional activity within the English language course.

Good communication is required to build and maintain mutual relationship in project teams. This is because effective communication can enable a work team to achieve their goals. This stems from the fact that when the employees understand the management expectations and target goals, they will be able to do their work task based on the required standard. Also, effective communication is critical to the success of team work because the ability to work together without issues is determined by conveying the right information at the right. However, despite the crucial role played by effective communication in a productive work environment, it was found that Matrix Coating Resource Sdn Bhd (MCR) often experience communication issues among the workforce and this result to workplace conflict and employee relationship issues. It was on this note that this consultancy project critically examined the communications and employee relationships practices of MCR in order to determine key areas required to improve project tasks completion. A sample of 50 respondents were chosen from the workforce using both interview and questionnaire instruments. The study found that the staff of Matrix often experience communication issues and this leads to disagreements and misunderstanding among the workforce. This is because proper communication using appropriate channel can help to ease both the number and severity of workplace conflicts. Driven by this, it was proposed that the management of Matrix should do well to employ people with solid communication skills because this will allow them to work together cohesively and professionally, address the issue through training exercises and behaviour modeling. It should conduct constant training programmes especially for the new staff so as to improve their ability to communicate clearly and concisely with colleagues and work team members, include communication skills in the appraisal of employees’ performance and tie the organization’s objectives into performance appraisal so as to achieve the goals of the company and develop team building exercises to strengthen intra-office relationship. This is because high performance teams often become more cohesive overtime as they gain experiences working and communicating with other teams in the workplace. Therefore, exciting activities such as informal networking groups, team exercises and others so as to enable the staff to work together in a cohesive way. The team building process will allow the team members to learn the best ways to work together through team experience without issues.
