This study was designed to investigate the effect of thyroid hormone disturbance on lipids profiles and liver functions. Eighteen mature male rats Rattus norvegicus were divided into three groups. The first and the second groups were injected subcutaneously with thyroxine (T4) and carbimazol (both at 600 µg/kg BW) respectively on alternate days, to produce recurrent periods of hyper and hypothyroidism .The control group which is the third group was injected with physiological saline. The process continued 4 weeks, after that, injection, blood specimens were collected to estimate serum levels of T3 and T4, Total cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and Very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) were determined in the serum. In addition to that, we measure GOT, GPT and CPK enzymes activity. The results showed no significant difference in body weight and a significant increase (P

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study was designed to determine whether the haptoglobin levels are comparable to the antioxidant status levels. 40 athletes and 30 volunteers were enrolled in the study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Blood samples for serum malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status (TAS), haptoglobin, glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and lipoprotein (a) (Lip a) determinations were obtained before and after cyclists completed 300 km bicycle ride. RESULTS: Comparison of the results between the cyclists and control group yielded a signicant difference in serum levels of TG, VLDL-C and LDL-C (P<0.05). The cycling induced a signicant increase in HDL-C, VLDL-C, TG, MDA and TAS levels (P<0.001). Serum LDL-C and Lip a levels were greater before than after cycling (P<0.05). There was no signicant difference among precycling and postcycling haptoglobin levels, whereas the haptoglobin level in control group was signicantly higher than in the cyclists (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The change in serum antioxidant and lipid levels due to physical activity must be explained as a consequence of the duration of exercise. Further studies are needed to demonstrate haptoglobin's possible role in decreasing oxidative stress during exercise.

The aim of this study is to explain the effect of Ethanolic extract 70% of Metracaria chamomella on some physiological parameters in male rabbits. Twelve adult male rabbits were used in this study and were divided equally into two groups: First group was control (C) and received normal saline for four weeks, the second group (Treated group) was intubated orally with ethanolic extract of Metracaria chamomella in a dose 70 mg/kg B.W. for four weeks. Blood samples were collected by heart puncture from each animal at the end of experiment. Blood sample was divided into a part for hematological study and a part for biochemical analysis. The value of serum urea, and creatinine were reduced in animals that received Metracaria chamomella extract at dose of 70 mg/ kg B.W. as compared with the control group. Significant decrease in serum activity of aspartate aminotransferase alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activity was observed in Metracaria treated animal as compared with the control group. This study explained that there was significant increase in serum total protein, serum albumin and serum globulin in treated animals as compared with the control group. The value of total cholesterol, serum triacylglycerol, serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration were reduced significantly in animal received Metracaria chamomella extract while the high density lipoprotein cholesterol was elevated significantly as compared with control group. While the effect of Metracaria chamomella extract on blood picture showed no changes in red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value but showed significant decrease in platelet count, and significant   increase in white blood cell count as compared with control group. Over all this study explained that Metracaria chamomella extract had Reno protective and hypolipidimic effect in male rabbit.

Rutin, a food derived-polyphenolic bioflavonoid, has been acknowledged for several health benefits. This study aims to explore the ameliorative effects of rutin against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) toxicity in male rats. Adult male rats were given either CCl4 (30% in olive oil, 3 ml/kg b.w. intraperitoneally) alone or in combination with rutin (70 mg/kg intragastrically) twice a week for 4 weeks. Our data showed that rutin mitigated CCl4 hepatorenal damage, as indicated by diagnostic markers (i.e., transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, total protein, albumin, urea, uric acid and creatinine), and histopathological findings. In addition, CCl4 induced profound elevation of free radical generation and oxidative stress, as evidenced by increasing lipid peroxidation and reducing catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in liver, kidney and testicular tissues; these effects were suppressed by coexposure with rutin. Moreover, the increase in the levels of serum triglycerides, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol induced by CCl4 was effectively counteracted by rutin. The decrease in the level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the CCl4 group was also counteracted by rutin treatment. Interestingly, the decreased levels of hormonal mediators associated with sperm production, including serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, and the impaired sperm quality induced by CCl4 were reversed by rutin. Data from the current study clearly demonstrated that rutin supplementation could at least partly overcome CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity and reproductive toxicity by antioxidant and antidyslipidemic effects.

Objectives: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is also the major risk for cardiovascular disease like metabolic syndrome (MetS). Hence, the aim of this study is to assess the association of SCH in MetS patients.Materials and Methods: Ninety patients reporting to Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals were enrolled in the study which includes 40 patients with MetS and 40 healthy individuals. 5 ml of venous blood was collected and centrifuged. Then, it is analyzed for fasting blood sugar, serum triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) using the standard kit method. Then, Free T3, Free T4, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were estimated by ELISA method. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using the SPSS software. Results: SCH is 20% in cases when compared to 4.4% in controls, which was significant, p=0.024. The biochemical parameters were compared between the study population fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and VLDL cholesterol was statistically significant, with p<0.001. TSH levels showed significant difference between two groups with the p=0.002.Conclusion: MetS patients should be screened for the SCH as an important risk factor in evaluation protocol. Mere correction of TSH levels can reverse the associated morbidity in these patients rather than leaving them untreated pushing them to a state of overt hypothyroidism with its attendant complications.

1. Serum cholesterol reduction and changes in cholesterol metabolism were studied during rapeseed oil feeding without and with increasing amounts of sitostanol trans-esterified with rapeseed oil fatty acids and dissolved in rapeseed oil mayonnaise. Fifteen mildly hypercholesterolaemic subjects replaced 50 g of their usual dietary fat by 50 g of rapeseed oil fat mayonnaise for 6 weeks followed by randomization so that eight subjects continued on rapeseed oil mayonnaise alone (control group) for 15 weeks and seven on rapeseed oil mayonnaise with a small dose of sitostanol ester (800 mg/day of sitostanol) for 9 weeks followed by 6 weeks with higher dose of sitostanol ester (2000 mg/day of sitostanol). 2. During the rapeseed oil period the reduction in serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was 14% from the home diet. The control-adjusted reduction by the low sitostanol ester dose was 7.4% (not significant) and by the higher dose it was 15.7%. 3. The low dose of sitostanol ester had no consistent effect on cholesterol precursors or cholestanol in serum, reduced serum levels of campesterol and sitosterol by 28.2% and 23.6%, respectively, and reduced cholesterol absorption efficiency significantly from 28.7% to 23.4%. In accordance, faecal excretion of neutral and particularly endogenous neutral sterols increased (16.7% and 19.7%, respectively), but faecal cholesterol elimination and cholesterol synthesis were only insignificantly increased. 4. During the high dose of sitostanol ester the high-density lipoprotein- to low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratio increased. Serum levels of cholesterol precursor sterols, indicators of cholesterol synthesis, increased up to 12%, whereas those of cholestanol were slightly decreased and those of campesterol and sitosterol values were further reduced by 30% and 25.6%, respectively. 5. Associations of serum plant sterols and cholesterol precursors with cholesterol absorption efficiency and synthesis and the sitostanol-ester-induced changes in serum campesterol and lathosterol proportions with those in serum low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol suggest that reduced cholesterol absorption efficiency was the main reason for cholesterol reduction and that there was a compensatory increase in cholesterol synthesis. 6. The findings indicate that sitostanol ester dissolved in dietary fat is apparently unabsorbable and interferes with sterol absorption so that the serum levels of cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol are reduced to the extent that sitostanol ester-fat mixture in reasonable daily amounts can be recommended to replace dietary fat for lowering of serum cholesterol.

Nowadays, much attention has been paid to the link between gut microbiota and brain. The beneficial metabolic effects of probiotics and prebiotics in several diseases such as diabetes and obesity have been reported. However, studies bridging the association of gut microbiome with brain function in healthy states are rare. Therefore, it was hypothesized that the administration of Lactobacillus plantarum ( L plantarum) and inulin may affect serum and hypothalamic metabolic parameters as well as oxidative markers in healthy male rats. Daily L plantarum (107 CFU/mL) and inulin (5% of daily food weight) or their combination (synbiotic) was given to healthy rats. Then, serum and hypothalamic levels of leptin, insulin, and oxidative markers were measured. Administration of synbiotic for 8 weeks led to significant changes in serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein ratio, triglyceride, and total cholesterol. The intake of synbiotic also resulted in a significantly reduced hypothalamic level of malondialdehyde and increased hypothalamic superoxide dismutase (SOD). Also, L plantarum could significantly increase hypothalamic SOD level. Furthermore, synbiotic administration insignificantly increased the hypothalamic and serum levels of insulin and leptin. These findings suggest that the synbiotic could significantly improve oxidative markers and lipid profile in healthy rats. Therefore, simultaneous intake of L plantarum and inulin appears to be more effective in the amelioration of metabolic and oxidative parameters.
