IMPACT OF WHEAT ESTABLISHMENT METHODS AND WEED MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON WEED FLORA, YIELD AND NUTRIENT UPTAKE OF WHEAT IN RICE-WHEAT CROPPING SYSTEM

A field experiment was conducted at the Crop Research Centre of Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology Pantnagar, Udham Singh Nagar during continuous two years to study the weed flora, yield and nutrient uptake of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under different wheat establishment methods in main plots and seven weed management in sub plots. Phalaris minor was the most dominant weed at 60 DAS contributed 55.0 per cent of total weed population. Melilotusindica was the major non grassy weeds in wheat which contributed 11 per cent to total weed population during respective years. Sowing of wheat with zero tillage significantly reduced the Phalaris minor density as compared to conventionally tilled wheat after transplanted rice, 60 per cent Phalaris minor emerged from 0-3 cm in reduced and conventional tillage where as in zero tillage after transplanted rice there was 55 per cent emergence from 0-3 cm layer.The highest grain yield was obtained in two hand weedings done at 30 and 60 DAS and was at par with Isoproturon 1.0 kg ha-1 + Metsulfuron methyl 4 g ha-1 at 30 DAS and Clodinafop – Propargyl 60 g ha-1 at 30 DAS fb. Metsulfuron methyl 4 g ha-1 at 37 DAS. Zero tillage resulted in significantly higher uptake of NPK by wheat plants as compared to conventional tillage, whereas reduced tillage recorded minimum NPK, which was significantly lower over the other treatments of wheat establishment methods.

A field experiment entitled ‘Influence of tillage and weed management practices on yield and nutrient uptake of maize’ was conducted during Rabi-2018 at all India coordinated research project on Weed Management, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, Hyderabad to study the effect of different tillage and weed management practices on nutrient uptake of maize. The soil of the experimental field was sandy clay loam in texture with moderately alkaline pH, low in available nitrogen, medium in available P and high in available K. The field experiment was laid out in split plot design with (five tillage practices) in main plots and (three weed management practices) in sub plots. The results revealed that highest total nitrogen uptake was recorded with conventional tillage (Transplanted rice) – zero tillage (maize) and it is on par with conventional tillage (transplanted rice) – conventional tillage (maize) treatments. The highest total phosphorus and total potassium uptake was recorded with conventional tillage (transplanted) – conventional tillage (maize) and it was on par with conventional tillage (Transplanted) – zero tillage (maize). Integrated weed management was found to be significantly superior with nutrient uptake followed by chemical weed management.

A field experiment was conducted at the Crop Research Centre of GBPUA and T, Pantnagar, Udham Singh Nagar continuous two years to study the productivity, soil properties, and economics of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under different wheat establishment methods in main plots and seven weed management practices in sub plots, replicated thrice in a split plot design. Zero tilled wheat exhibited more number of spikes m-2 and more number of grains per spike was significantly higher than reduced and conventional tillage. The zero tilled wheat yielded 12.35 and 3.66 per cent higher over reduced and conventional tillage during Ist year and 11.99 and 3.09 per cent during IInd year. The bulk density of soil was higher under zero tillage than that of other tillage. The infiltration rate was significantly greater with ZT than RT and CT. The highest grain yield was obtained in two hand weedings done at 30 and 60 DAS and was at par with Isoproturon 1.0 kg ha-1 + Metsulfuron methyl 4 g ha-1 at 30 DAS and Clodinafop – Propargyl 60 g ha-1 at 30 DAS fb. Metsulfuron methyl 4 g ha-1 at 37 DAS.

An ongoing field experiment established in 2012 at Agronomy Research Farm, Chaudhary Charan Singh (CCS) Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, India was selected to evaluated the effect of three tillage practices (zero tillage, furrow irrigated raised bed system and conventional tillage with mouldboard plow ) and four weed management practices (W1: Atrazine (50% W.P.) at750 g/ha in maize and pinoxaden 50 g/ha + premix of metsulfuron and carfentrazone (Ally Express 50% DF) 25 g/ha + 0.2% NIS as post-emergence in wheat, W2: Tembotrione (Laudis 42% Sc @ 120 g/ha + S 1000 ml/ha (10-15 days/ 2-4 leaf stage) in maize and clodinafop 60 g/ha + metsulfuron 4 g/ha as post- emergence in wheat, W3: Two HW in maize (20 to 40 days) and wheat (30 to 50 days), W4: Weedy check in maize and wheat) on nutrient uptake and yield of wheat. Treatment was replicated thrice with spilt plot design. Plant samples were collected in the month of April, 2016 after the harvesting of wheat. Significantly higher yield of wheat was reported under FIRBS (66.1 qha-1) followed by zero tillage and under weedy check treatment as compared to other under different tillage and weed management practices. These results suggest that zero tillage and FIRBS along with the weedy check treatment results in higher wheat yield followed by maize.

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of tillage, mulching and weed management practices on growth, yield and uptake of nutrients by chickpea during rabi 2010 and 2011 at MARS, UAS Dharwad, Karnataka. Conventional tillage increased various growth, yield parameters and chickpea yield and also nutrient uptake and nitrogen use efficiency over minimum and zero tillage practices. Significantly higher gross return, net return and B:C ratio were recorded in conventional tillage as compared to minimum and zero tillage practices. Mulching practice showed higher growth, yield and yield parameters of chickpea and also nutrient uptake and economics over minimum and zero tillage practices. Significantly higher growth, chickpea yield and yield parameters, nutrient uptake, gross return, net return and B:C ratio were recorded in application of pendimethalin as compared to other weed management practices.

Field experiment was carried out during the 2015 and 2016 cropping seasons at Integrated Water and Agricultural Development Limited (IWAD) in the Mamprugu Moaduri district of Northern region. The objectives of the study were to evaluate tillage system, soil amendment and weed management regime on the growth and yield of rice under lowland conditions. The experiment was laid out in split-split-plot design in three replications with tillage, soil amendment and weed management which constituted the main-plot, sub-plot and sub-sub-plot factors respectively. Tillage, soil amendment and weed management, each at three levels, were respectively made-up of zero tillage (ZT), minimum tillage (MT) and conventional tillage (CT); 2.5 tons/ha organic manure, 2 tons/ha biochar and 250 kg NPK/ha; and hand weeding at 3 and 6 weeks after planting (WAP), pre-emergence herbicide, and post-emergence herbicide. Post-emergence herbicide application supported earliest flower initiation (80-85 days) compared to manual weeding (82-92 days) and pre-emergence herbicides (83-90 days). The combination of zero tillage and pre-emergence herbicide weed management gave the highest number of tillers of 34.3 per hill and maximized grain yield (6661 kg/ha). Longest rice root length was 34 cm in zero tillage with compost amendments and pre-emergence herbicide treatments. Soil carbon stock below 40 cm soil depth was highest in zero tillage (0.89% C) compared to minimum tillage (0.65% C) and conventional tillage (0.55 % C). Results gave good indication of best land preparation, soil amendment and weed management practice that could promote sustainable cropping in sandy-loam textured lowland soils.

Field experiment on effect of different weed management practices in machine transplanted rice (Oryza sativa L.) was conducted at ARS, Gangavathi, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur, Karnataka during kharif, 2012 and 2013 under irrigated condition in clay soil. Pooled mean indicated that, application of butachlor 50 EC fb passing of power operated low land rice weeder twice at 20 and 30 DAT with hand weeding in intra row space recorded significantly lower grassy weed population and dry weight at 40, 60 DAT and at harvest (1.98, 2.47, 2.97/0.25 m2 and 1.00, 1.20, 1.47 g /0.25 m2, respectively), sedge weed population and dry weight (2.61, 3.21, 3.52 /0.25 m2 and 1.19, 1.48, 1.71 g /0.25 m2, respectively) and broad leaved weed population and dry weight (1.68, 2.10, 2.52 / 0.25 m2 and 0.91, 1.06, 1.28 g /0.25 m2, respectively). Significantly higher WCE (87.53%), lower weed index (3.11 %), grain and straw yield (5160 and 6482 kg ha-1, respectively), gross and net returns (Rs. 92,212 and 50,410 ha-1, respectively), and B:C of 2.22 over unweeded check. Hence, application of butachlor 50 EC fb passing of power operated low land rice weeder at 20 and 30 DAT with hand weeding in intra row space was found to be the best weed control method as it recorded higher B:C. Present conventional manual weeding is which is not advantageous as it is costlier, time consuming and labour may trample and damage rice seedlings. Mechanical weeder and sequential application can overcome the same.

The distribution of NaHCO3-extractable nitrate-N, ammonium-N, phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) with soil depth (0 to 20 cm in 5-cm increments) at Fort Vermilion (58°23′N 116°02′ W), Alberta, was described in the 7th and 8th years of conventional and zero tillage following placement of red clover (Trifolium pratense) green manure (GM), field pea (Pisum sativum), canola (Brassica rapa) and monoculture wheat (Triticum aestivum) residues. Soil nitrate-N concentrations under zero tillage were greater than those under conventional tillage in the 0–5 cm soil layer, below which the concentrations were similar. Ammonium-N and K concentrations followed a similar pattern. However, soil P concentrations were usually not different between tillage systems in the 0–5 cm soil layer, but the concentrations decreased more under zero tillage than under conventional tillage at lower depths. A notable exception for soil phosphate was under canola residues, where the concentration was greater under zero tillage than under conventional tillage at all depths. Uptake of N, P or K by a subsequent wheat crop was usually greater (though not always significantly) under zero tillage than under conventional tillage, and there were no interactions between tillage and crop residue. Therefore, differences in nutrient stratification between the two tillage systems did not translate into differences in wheat nutrient uptake. A field study was conducted during rabi seasons of 2010-11 and 2011-12 at the Research cum Instructional Farm of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur, Chhattisgarh to evaluate the effect of various tillage and weed management techniques on energy dynamics and profitability of chickpea-rice cropping sequence in irrigated ecosystem of C.G. plains. The results indicate that plots were divided into main and sub plots (tillage and weed management practices). Three tillage practices viz., conventional tillage (T1),  minimum tillage (T2) and zero tillage (T3) in main plot and nine weed management practices as pendimethalin @ 1000 g ha-1 PE (W1), imazethapyr @ 80 g ha-1 PE (W2), imazethapyr @ 90 g ha-1 PE (W3), imazethapyr @ 100 g ha-1 PE (W4) at 2 DAS, imazethapyr @ 70 g ha-1 POE (W5), imazethapyr @ 80 g ha-1 POE (W6), imazethapyr @ 90 g ha-1 POE (W7) at 20 DAS, one hand weeding at 20 DAS (W8) and weedy check (W9), in sub plots. Among the various tillage practices, maximum energy use efficiency 3.74 q MJ-1 × 10-3 ha-1 and energy productivity 160.34 kg MJ-1 ha-1 were obtained with conventional tillage (T1) followed by minimum tillage (T2) and zero tillage (T3) and among the different weed control methods, maximum energy use efficiency 5.46 q MJ-1 × 10-3 ha-1 and energy productivity 233.37 kg MJ-1 ha-1 were found with one hand weeding at 20 DAS (W8) followed by post-emergence application of imazethapyr @ 90 g ha-1 (W7) followed by imazethapyr @ 80 g ha-1 PoE (W6). The economic production of experiment in terms of net return was maximum under (T1) conventional tillage Rs.19824.21 ha-1 with B:C ratio 1.19 and (W8) one hand weeding at 20 DAS Rs.19171.44 ha-1 with B:C ratio 0.95 and this was followed by @ 90 g ha-1 imazethapyr, where net return Rs.19086.74 ha-1 and B:C ratio 1.04. The minimum net return and B:C ratio was observed under zero tillage (T3) and weedy check (W9).
