The objective of this study is to measure the efficiency of commercial banks in Tanzania using a non-parametric approach, the input-oriented data envelopment analysis (DEA), both by constant return to scale (CRS) and variable return to scale (VRS). For this purpose, two outputs representing total loans and total interest income, and three inputs representing total deposits, the number of employees and total expenses are selected for seven-years (2006-2012) period in the analysis. The findings under CRS model identify four banks to be fully efficient in the year 2006, two banks in 2007 and one bank in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, while VRS model results identify five banks to be fully efficient in the year 2006 and 2012, three banks in 2007 and two banks in 2008 and 2009, one bank 2010 and 2011. Four banks, Standard Charted bank, National Commercial Bank (NBC), Citibank and Barclays bank are found to be the most efficiency banks in Tanzania, which serve as the benchmark peers for inefficient banks in the sample, In addition Tobit regression has been used to determine the efficiency drivers.

Banking sector mediation is related to efficiency in economic performance. As a financial institution, banks need to maintain their performance in order to operate optimally, one factor that must be considered is efficiency in performance. This research aimed to analyze the efficiency of Islamic Banks and Conventional Commercial Bank in Indonesia. Using a purposive sample technique for two Islamic banks and two commercial banks. Fixed assets, deposits, and other operating expenses as input variablesused, while credit as output variable. Using Data Envelopment Analysis to calculate the efficiency of banking. The results show that all Sharia Commercial Bank samples reached efficiency level 1 was efficient. Besides, the sample of conventional commercial banks used in this study is not all efficient. This is due to one of the sample banks having an efficiency level below one, which is 0.644. It means that conventional bank groups are inefficient.

The aim of the paper is to estimate the cost efficiency of the Czech and Slovak commercial banks within the period 2010-2014. For empirical analysis the Data Envelopment Analysis input-oriented model with variable returns to scale is applied on the data of the commercial banks. The intermediation approach is adopted to define the inputs and outputs. The Czech commercial banks are more cost efficient than Slovak commercial banks. The development of average cost efficiency is similar in the Czech and Slovak banking industry. The most efficient Czech banks are Ceská sporitelna and Sberbank in the Czech banking sector, the most efficient Slovak bank is Privatbanka with 100% efficiency.

Purpose Efficiency of a commercial bank affects both its competitiveness and the role it plays in the process of economic development. Although great efforts have been exerted in developing the various aspects of banking efficiency, there seems to be a lack of research on examining the impact of the bank efficiency from the employee wage perspective. The mechanism of how employee wage affects commercial bank efficiency and the relationship between the two were analyzed in this paper. Based on the growing body of research on efficiency in banking, the aim of this paper is to examine if competitiveness of employee wages at any commercial bank has any impact on the bank efficiency score. Design/methodology/approach The method used was quantitative analysis, which was based on comparing the evaluated efficiencies of the banks with employee wages published in the bank reports. The empirical data in this paper were based on 16 Chinese listed commercial banks from 2004 to 2012. The per capita wage of commercial banks was selected as the wage indicator, and the efficiency value obtained by the slack-based measure (SBM) model was selected as the efficiency indicator. According to the calculated data, the Tobit regression model was built to analyze the relationship between employee wage and commercial bank efficiency. Findings The research results show that employee wage is the key variable that influences the efficiency of Chinese commercial banks, and the inverted U-shaped relationship between employee wage and commercial banks efficiency shows up. Practical implications The wage structure data of the composition of basic pay and bonus were not available at the time of conducting the research. Per capita wages were used instead to reflect the employee wage levels of Chinese banks. Originality/value This study can provide some help for the banking industry by analyzing the wage levels from the perspective of efficiency and also further enriches the theoretical system of the relationship between employee wage and bank efficiency.

This article follows Simar and Wilson’s (2007 , Journal of Econometrics, 136(1), 31–64) two-stage procedure to analyse the efficiency of the Malaysian banking sector. In the first stage, we employ the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method to compute the efficiency of individual banks during the period 1999–2008. We then use panel regressions to examine the impact of ownership on bank efficiency while controlling for the potential impacts of contextual variables. The DEA results indicate an increase in efficiency over the sample period. The results from the panel regression suggest that productive efficiency is positively related to bank size, capitalization and foreign ownership. On the other hand, the publicly listed and government-owned banks have been relatively inefficient in their intermediation function.

This study aims to measure the effects of bank-specific factors on the efficiency of Pakistan's twenty-seven (27) commercial banks. Efficiency was computed by input-oriented data envelopment analysis approach under CRS (constant return to scale) and VRS (variable return to scale) assumptions. The results revealed that overall inefficiency in commercial banks was to tune of 10 percent and was caused by both managerial incompetence and uneconomical bank's size. However, the uneconomic scale size remained the dominant source of inefficiency at individual banks level, and most of the banks exhibited a decreasing return to scale (DRS) behaviour. Furthermore, efficiency scores were regressed by bank-specific factors using the Tobit regression model. Among the bank-specific factors, Profitability, liquidity, bank size had a significant and positive impact, while market share and Asset quality had a negative and substantial effect on all the efficiency parameters.

This paper evaluates the performance of Indonesian banking sector, focusing on technical efficiency of sharia and conventional banks along with the determinants of its efficiency during the period 2002-2010. Data Envelopment Analysis is employed to estimate banks technical efficiency and Tobit-regression is used to reveal the determinants of the efficiency over the panel data of 116 banks, including 109 conventional banks and 7 sharia banks. The result shows that sharia banks outperformed conventional banks in one model when it takes into account small business finance (SBF) as one of the output components in the model. Sharia banks have higher average SBF portfolio than those of conventional banks’ portfolio. The result indicates the efforts of Indonesian sharia banks to obey one of the principles in Islamic banking, “the emphasis on Islamic principles of morality”. By observing all models, it is concluded that the size of the bank, capital adequacy and liquidity are of banks characteristic factors which are very important to increase banks’ efficiency

The aim of this article is to evaluate the technical efficiency of the chosen commercial banks, which in the years 2014–2016 were participants in acquisitions in the banking sector, with the usage of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model. The DEA model was modified through reshaping the linear form using the Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes (CCR) model, which is aimed at expenditures. Particular attention was paid to the impact of acquisitions in the banking sector on the improvement or deterioration of the technical efficiency of banks that act as acquiring banks.

Efficiency is one of the tools used by the Government to measure the success of an activity. Based on PMK Number 214/ PMK.02/2017 it is regulated regarding the measurement and Evaluation of Budget Performance for the implementation of Work Plans and Ministries/Institutions Budgets. To measure budget performance achievement based on aspects of implementation 4 (four) variables i.e. budget absorption, output achievements, efficiency, and consistency of budget absorption towards planning, are used. This study aims to measure the efficiency level of Ministries/Institutions budget performance using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). However, the variables used are not only based on measurement aspects of implementation according to PMK Number 214/PMK.02/2017 but also the number of satker (satuan Kerja). The approach used in the DEA model is Constant Return to Scale (CRS) model and Variable Return to Scale (VRS) model. This study uses the DEA model approach by comparing the results of the CRS model with VRS model. Based on DEA results, the number of Ministries/Institutions that have efficient scores is less than the number of Ministries/Institutions with inefficient scores. In addition, based on the value of slacks in each Ministries/Institutions, the variables that need to be improved are the coordination among satkers in when they are recording their performance achievements in the SMART application. Other variables that also require improvements are the ministry/agency’s willingness to revise their Disbursement Plan (RPD) after each budget revision and the speed at which they spend their budget once DIPA is stipulated.

PurposeThis study used data envelopment analysis (DEA) models to measure financial efficiency of twelve commercial banks listed in the Egyptian stock exchange (CBLSE), along with evaluating changes to the financial efficiency during the period 2017–2019.Design/methodology/approachThe study used BCC-I, cross-efficiency, super-efficiency models, and Malmquist productivity index (MPI) to assess financial efficiency of the examined banks. The available data from both inputs and outputs were analyzed using R. studio V.I.3. 1056 software.FindingsOut of twelve banks examined, only four banks were efficient under BCC-I model over different years of the study period; however, only one bank (CIB) appeared to be the most efficient compared to other peers in the study sample. Moreover, MPI results revealed decreased financial efficiency during the study period, due to the decreased technological innovation, except for HDB. Tobit regression results confirmed that total assets and total equity are significant factors impacted financial efficiency of CBLSE.Practical implicationsThis study sheds light on the importance of evaluating financial efficiency of CBLSE to all stakeholders, to pinpoint weaknesses in banks' performance, and for evaluating financial policies and investment decisions.Originality/valueSeveral studies sought to implement different models of DEA to assess banking performance in different regions of the world, but very few studies examined financial efficiency of banks. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this study is one of those few that addressed financial efficiency of banks in Egypt.
