AbstractFive small water bodies located within the agricultural region of Wielkopolska (west Poland) underwent investigation. Periphyton samples were collected from various macrophyte habitats representing rush vegetation (in five water bodies), submerged aquatic plants (in three) and nymphaeids (in one): Palędzie — Ceratophyllum demersum, Potamogeton crispus, Typha latifolia; Batorowo — Phragmites australis; Piotrowo — Potamogeton natans, Ceratophyllum submersum, Typha latifolia; Tarnowo Podgórne — Typha latifolia; Dąbrówka — Zannichellia palustris, Potamogeton pectinatus, Phragmites australis. The main goal of the study was to determine the composition and abundance of the periphytic communities inhabiting various types of rush and water vegetation of five water bodies located within a mid-field landscape area.Diatoms such as Achnanthidium minutissimum, Amphora ovalis, Cocconeis placentula orNavicula cincta revealed significantly higher densities in the zone of elodeids, while green algae prevailed among nymphaeids. As a result of this study it was found that the epiphytic algae were characterised by much lower diversity in respect to a specific water body, though much greater diversity was observed in its relation to the type of substratum. Two types of habitats were distinguished — the first of simple build (helophytes and nympheids) and the second containing the complicated architecture of plant stems (elodeids).

Investigations of the phytoplankton, zooplankton, zoobenthos and aquatic vegetation in Lake Qiluhu were carried out in February, 2009. Over the whole lake, 13 sampling sites were set up for the analysis of phytoplankton and zooplankton, and 22 profiles for the collection of macrophytes and zoobenthos. In the survey, 7 phyla, 65 algae species were identified. The average abundance of phytoplankton was 7.16 × 108 cells/L, and the dominant specie was Limnothrix redekei. No obvious surface accumulation of algae was detected. The concentration of Chlorophyll a ranged from 85 to 101 μg/L, and the average value was 93 μg/L. Nineteen species of zooplankton were observed, including 4 species of rotifers, 6 species of cladocerans and 9 species of copepods. Copepods were the dominant species, their abundance reaching 68%, whilst Cladocerans took second place with an abundance proportion of 28%. Six species of submerged vegetation were identified: Potamogeton Pectinatus, Myriophyllum, Elodea Canadensis, Ceratophyllum demersum and Potamogeton crispus. Amongst them, the dominant vegetation was P. Pectinatus, the biomass of which was up to 63% of the total biomass. Emerged macrophytes were cluster distributed across the whole lake, mainly consisting of Scirpus tabernaemontani, phragmites communis and cane shoots. Unfortunately, no living zoobenthos were found at the sites. The results indicated that, in Lake Qiluhu, the abundance of phytoplankton was maintained at a high level. The ecological function of submerged vegetation was gradually being lost because of its low standing crop and coverage, and the benthic animal habitat was severely damaged.

The fatty acid comparative essay of high aquatic plants: Typha latifolia L., Ceratophyllum demersum L. and Veronica anagallis-aquatica L. from water bodies of Baikalian region was carried out. For the first time this biochemical parameter of water form V. anagallis-aquatica was compared with that of coastal-water T. latifolia and submerged C. demersum. The fifteen individual molecules of fatty acids with a chain length from 12 to 22 carbon atoms have been identified by the method of gas liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry. The fatty acid composition of investigated species was different. Among the fatty acids saturated and unsaturated molecules was found, the most distributed fatty acids was saturated palmitic (С16:0), steric (С18:0) and unsaturated linoleic (С18:2 w6), α-linolenic (С18:3 w3). In total, the C16 and C18 acids in studied species accounted for 98%. Differences in the composition of fatty acids of the studied species are discussed from the standpoint of the characteristics of fatty acid metabolism depending on the habitat of plants and are considered as one of the mechanisms of their adaptation to late vegetation. Studies of the fatty acid composition of aquatic organisms contribute to the overall strategy of plant adaptation to changing environmental conditions and are important for the ecological and biochemical monitoring of the ecological status of water bodies.

AbstractThe aim of the study was to determine whether biometric features of plants collected from single-species phytocoenoses developing in ponds can be used to describe habitat conditions of these water bodies. The biometric measurements were carried out in 148 field small water bodies at a total of 198 sites. The length of plants, their dry biomass, and volume of plant shoots were analyzed, converted to 1000 dm3 of water. The biometric measurements showed very large differences in individual parameters of different macrophyte species. The biggest differences were found in the length of elodeids and helophytes (from 1 cm to > 900 cm), regardless of trophic conditions. Although the Polish flora is dominated by plants having a wide ecological range, there are species whose parameters correspond to specific habitat fertility. The highest biometric parameters were found for Ceratophyllum submersum, Sparganium erectum, Typha latifolia and Schoenoplectus lacustris in ponds characterized by increased trophic conditions. In contrast, Myriophyllum spp. alone showed a negative correlation with trophic state indices. The trophic effect on the studied parameters becomes more apparent for species with optima in fertile water bodies. The parameters of Ceratophyllum submersum can be considered as the trophic state index (TSI).

Macrophytes and selected physical-chemical water properties were studied in 17 post-mining lakes of Jeziórko Sulphur Mine – one of the largest borehole sulphur mines in the world. Artificial lakes were constructed in subsidence depressions during the reclamation process of mining fields. They were characterized by high mineralization – conductivity ranged from 723 to 2295 μS/cm. The reaction was near neutral, or more frequently, slightly alkaline. Concentrations of phosphorus and organic matter were low. In the group of hydrophytes, Ceratophyllum demersum, Myriophyllum spicatum, Najas marina, Utricularia vulgaris, Eleocharis acicularis, Potamogeton pectinatus, Potamogeton natans and Potamogeton pusillus were frequently dominant. In several lakes, large macroscopic algae dominated – charophytes forming large, dense Chara meadows. In marsh communities, Phragmites australis was the most expansive. Reclamation process had a positive effect on diversity, some of the species found in the study area are regionally rare, including one species which is threatened in Poland (Najas minor). No alien species were recorded.

The concentrations of Cu and Zn were measured in shoots of plants Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin ex Steud., Typha latifolia L. and Typha angustifolia L. at four locations in the area Bardaca (Necik - neglected fishpond, Lug - fishpond used for recreation activities, Sinjak - active fishpond and Matura - river connected to some of the fishponds). In all these types of water bodies, Zn and Cu concentrations were the highest in young plants (May-June) and then declined until the end of the season, especially in September. Phragmites australis has accumulated higher amounts of Zn than Typha latifolia and Typha angustifolia, whereas for Cu the difference between species was not so clear. In relation to the site, the largest concentrations of Zn and Cu were recorded in plants from the sites Sinjak and Matura, followed by Necik and Lug respectively. Such site specific differences are related to specific ecological conditions at each habitat.

Abstract. The article provides an analysis of the dynamics of the constancy indicators of representatives of higher aquatic vegetation (VBR) in the upper reaches of the Belaya River (Republic of Bashkortostan) from 2005 to 2019. Constancy indicators of 11 species of BBP (Butomus umbellatus L., 1753; Elodea canadensis Michx., 1803; Najas marina L., 1753; Potamogeton natans L., 1753; Potamogeton perfoliatus L., 1753; Potamogeton crispus L., 1753; Stuckenia pectinata L., 1753; Myriophyllum spicatum L., 1753; Lemna minor L., 1753; Spirodela polyrhiza Schleid., 1839 and Ceratophyllum demersum L., 1753) were registered in the areas of 2 state water posts the Shushpa railway station and the Arsky Kamen recreation house. In the course of research, for the first time, lists of permanent, additional and random species of BBP were compiled, correlation-regression models of the relationships between the constancy indicators of representatives of higher aquatic vegetation with the content of chemicals were calculated, the pollutants most strongly affecting the constancy indicators of representatives of BBP were identified, determined in the water of the upper course of the Belaya River.
