The effect of surfactants of various natures (tween-80, sorbitan monooleate SPAN-80, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and industrial-grade synthanol DS-10) on the resuspendability and sedimentation stability of an aqueous menthol suspension was studied.

Stability of coal-water suspension (WCS) is one of the main criteria for obtaining fuel efficient. In the present work we investigated the sedimentation stability of coal-water suspension of 35% (in the presence and absence of hexane) stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate. Found that pretreatment of coal hexane (before being crushed) and further stabilization of coal-water suspension of 35% sodium dodecyl sulfate at concentrations of 0.8-.1.0% helps to ensure a stable dispersion system.

ABSTRACT Why do viruses sometimes not pass through larger pores in track-etch filters? Increasing the salinity (0.8 to 160 mM Na+) decreased φX174 and PRD1 passage through track-etch polycarbonate membranes (sodium dodecyl sulfate coated but not polyvinylpyrrolidone coated) and PRD1 passage through polyester membranes. Undiminished passage when 0.1% Tween 80 was added implied that nonionic virus adsorption occurred and indicated that high levels of salinity decreased virus passage by decreasing electrostatic repulsion that prevented adsorption.

The performance of copper ion removal using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and its mixtures with Brij 35, Tween 80 (TW80) and Triton X-100 (TX100) by micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was investigated. The effects of the molar ratio of nonionic surfactant to SDS on the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDS/Brij 35, SDS/TW80 and SDS/TX100, the removal efficiency of Cu2+, the residual concentration of SDS in the permeate solution and the permeate flux were tested. The results showed that the CMCs of the mixed surfactants were sharply less than that of pure SDS. The removal efficiencies of Cu2+ were up to the maximum values 98.3 and 95.8% when the molar ratios of Brij 35 and TW80 to SDS were 0.3, and it was 93.5% given 0.7 molar ratio of TX100 to SDS. The concentration of SDS in the permeate decreased dramatically with the addition of nonionic surfactant, and the permeate flux decreased slightly as the molar ratio increased. Compared with the performance by single SDS, the mixed SDS/Brij 35, SDS/TW80 and SDS/TX100 at an optimum composition could result in not only higher rejection of Cu2+ but also much less dosage of surfactant and concentration of SDS in the permeate.

The reaction of triphenylmethane dye (ethyl violet) with hydroxyl ion has been investigated in absence and presence of micelles. In micellar solutions, the solubilization of dye carbocation is observed. The reaction rate constant follows pseudo-first order kinetics with respect to the nucleophile. In presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles, an inhibitory effect is observed due to repulsion of the nucleophile to the strongly bound dye carbocation in the negatively charged SDS aggregate. The presence of nonionic surfactant reduces the inhibitory effect of the anionic SDS micelles. Quantitative analysis of the micellar data obtained has been done by applying a positive cooperativity model of enzyme catalysis. The value of n (index of cooperativity) has been found to be greater than 1 for all systems under study. The presence of solvents such as ethanol, n-propanol, and n-butanol reduces the inhibitory effect of the micelles.

The present study is concerned with the determination of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of mixed micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate with one of five nonionic surfactants (Triton X-100, Tween 20, Tween 60, Tween 80 or Tween 85) from conductance measurements. Based on the calculated values of the ? parameters we have noticed that SDS-nonionic surfactants mostly showed strong synergistic effect. It was found that nonionic surfactants with mainly longer and more hydrophobic tail show stronger interactions with hydrophobic part of SDS, thus expressing stronger synergism. In SDS-Tween 80 binary system the strongest synergistic effect was noticed. SDS-Tween 85 micellar system showed antagonistic effect, most probably because the presence of the double bond in its three hydrophobic tails (three C18 tails) makes it sterically rigid.
