Aims/Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence and severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and presence of psychological factors (i.e.,anxiety and depression levels) in dental undergraduate students. Second purpose was to assess the association and correlation between TMD degree and psychological factors viz. anxiety and depression.Materials and methods: The sample comprised of 400 Dental undergraduatestudents aged 18- 25 years, including both the genders. TMD degree was evaluated using an anamnestic questionnaire (modified version of Helkimo’s anamnestic index). Morphologic occlusion was evaluated according to Angle classification. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to assess of levels of anxiety (HADSa) and depression (HADSd) in the dental undergraduate students. Results: Onbasisof the TMD anamnestic index, 74% of students were TMD free. 24.5% of subjects presented with mild degree of TMD and only 1.5% of subjects presented with moderate degree of TMD. According to the results obtained from HADSa, 35.3% of subjects presented with mild anxiety level, 13.8% with moderate anxiety level, and only 1.3% with severe anxiety level. According to the results obtained from HADSd, 10.3% of subjects presented with mild depression level and only 2.3% with moderate depression level. A definite association between TMD degree and Anxiety level (HADSa) was found. A definite association between TMD degree and Depression level (HADSd) was found. Therewas significant association between TMD degree and occlusion. Conclusions: On the basis of anamnestic index, this study revealed a 26% TMD prevalence in the dental undergraduate students included in the study; majority of cases being of mild degree. Both anxiety and depression were found to be associated with TMD degree/severity. Both anxiety and depression are weakly correlated with TMD in the present study.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ijasbt.v2i4.11204 Int J Appl Sci Biotechnol, Vol. 2(4): 426-431

In this study the impact of gender, levels of anxiety, and depression on pursuit rotor performance task was investigated. The participants were 292 undergraduate students (171 men and 121 women) of Kuwait University, Kuwait. They completed an anxiety scale, depression scale, and 4 speed levels of pursuit rotor. They were divided into 3 groups (low, middle, and high anxiety and depression) based on their scores on the Kuwait University Anxiety Scale (KUAS; Abdel-Khalek, 2000) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II; Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh, 1961). The results revealed that groups of men with low levels of anxiety, and high level of depression showed significant increment in performance and had more time on target than the other groups in all 4 speed sessions, whereas women displayed less time on target of pursuit rotor.

The study was carried out to explore the outcome of relaxation on stress, anxiety and depression level of the caregivers of cancer patients. Fifty caregivers of cancer survivors were randomly assigned to two groups. In intervention group, participants received relaxation once a week for five consecutive weeks while control group received no intervention. Stress (life‐stress questionnaire), anxiety (anxiety scale) and depression (depression scale) levels were assessed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed by independent sample t test. Results showed that relaxation helped the caregivers of cancer patients to reduce their stress and anxiety. But relaxation did not reduce the level of depression. Implication of the research and future guideline are also discussed. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. Sci. 26(2): 151-158, 2017 (July)

Objective. To study the character and features of emotional disorders in patients of dermatological and cardiological profile. Emotional changes, accompanying many somatic diseases, have a negative effect and aggravate their course, worsening the quality of life and functioning. Materials and methods. 68 persons, divided into two groups, participated in a single-stage study: group I included 38 patients with dermatoses without any concomitant diseases of the internal organs; group II 30 cardiological patients without dermatological pathology in anamnesis. Complex research included general clinical and laboratory methods as well as psychological study using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale HADS, Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, Montgomery Asberg Depression Scale, Spielberger Hanin Anxiety Scales. To assess the results, the methods of parametric and nonparametric statistics were used. Results. When assessing the parameters by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale HADS, in dermatological patients clinically and subclinically expressed anxiety was manifested more evidently, and in cardiological patients, it was depression. According to the data obtained by the Zung and Hamilton scales, depression also predominated in cardiological patients but anxiety symptoms and disorders reliably more often were observed in patients of dermatological profile. As for studying depression using the Montgomery-Asberg scale, in dermatological patients it was revealed less often, in the structure of symptoms there prevailed a small depressive episode. According to Spielberger Hanin Scale, anxiety was more expressed in dermatological patients. Conclusions. Emotional disorders in dermatological and cardiological patients are reliably different. In dermatological patients, they are characterized by increased anxiety in case of an insignificant depressive disorder. In cardiological patients, there prevail depressive changes, especially mild depression; anxiety symptomatology is not expressed.

Abstract The hypothesis that symptoms of anxiety and depression contribute to the development of arterial hypertension (AH) has been controversial. Mermerelis A. (2016) in pilot study found the association of anxiety disoders with resistant hypertension. Since 2013 social-and-psychological situation, which had developed in Ukraine after beginning of military conflict on the East of the country, has led to the destruction of public consciousness and vital orientation of millions people. Psychoemotional overstrain and psychic disadaptation induced the increasing of level cardiovascular diseases (CVD). But till now, the psychological factor we don't include in the management of hypertensive patient. Materials and methods The prospective study included 596 patients (375 women and 220 men), treated with arterial hypertension in University Clinic, Military Hospital and Cardiological Ambulance of Bukovinian Region. The exclusion criterias were concominant CVD and other somatical diseases in decompensation. Also we didn't include patients with psychiatry disoders. For psychometric screening hospital anxiety and depression scale HADS-A and HADS-D was used. Considering that the data obtained are characterized by asymptomatic normal distribution the Mantel-Henzel factor of disagreement or odds ratio were used. Results The study under the scheme “case-control” showed that in women OR index stresses significant interrelation of anxiety and level of blood pressure (BP). Thus, the subclinical anxiety at AH 1 degree was according to OR = 1.6 [CI95% - 0.96–2.54). This shows possible association of anxiety and AH at the lower border of the confidential interval. At resistance AH - OR was 3.26 [CI95% - 1.78–5.92], p<0.001. Clinical anxiety is associated with AH due to the index OR in the form of linear dependence, “p” is of high degree of reliability. In men subclinical anxiety is also associated with AH, however “p” value shows reliability only in an estimation of resistance AH at OR 3.45 [CI95% - 1.33–9.57]. The most significant association, both subclinical and clinical anxiety, was noticed at resistance AH both in women 3.1 [CI95% - 1.17–5.2] and men 4.8 [CI95% - 1.93–12.3]. Estimating the value of the relation of chances by association of anxiety and degree of AH in women, it is possible to notice complete comorbidity of anxiety level and arterial hypertension irrespective of their forms and degree. In men association of anxiety level and various clinical degrees of arterial hypertension has its own features, reaching maximum in patients with AH 3 degree and resistance AH. Conclusions In both women and men clinical form of anxiety often associated with AH 3 degree and resistance AH, so it is necessary to introduce the parameter of the presence of anxiety-depressive syndrome in patients with AH in subclinical and clinical forms.
