The issue of strengthening the damaged linear reinforced concrete elements have been engaged since 2008. We focused on the analysis of resistance and the characteristics of limit states of serviceability in the damaged and subsequently strengthened elements at a short-term loading. In the introduction phase, the strengthening of the elements was carried out with the following procedures – installation of an overlayer on the coupling board or a combination of the board and use of glass – fiber fabric (GFRP). The strengthening was also affected by the type of contact (reinforced/non-reinforced) – the deformed element/coupling board and its effect on resistance, type of deformation and serviceability. In the non-reinforced contact, we applied some of the types of adjustments to the surface of the strengthened element. At the moment, we are dealing with the effects of time and repeated load on the strengthened elements. The results correspond to the reinforced contact. The values are compared with the short-term results of the strengthened beams and with the long-term results of the beams prepared for strengthening.

Abstract Background Symptomatic haemorrhoids affect a large number of patients throughout the world. The aim of this systematic review was to compare the surgical outcomes of stapled haemorrhoidopexy (SH) versus open haemorrhoidectomy (OH) over a 20-year period. Methods Randomized controlled trials published between January 1998 and January 2019 were extracted from Pubmed using defined search criteria. Study characteristics and outcomes in the form of short-term and long-term complications of the two techniques were analyzed. Any changes in trend of outcomes over time were assessed by comparing article groups 1998–2008 and 2009–2019. Results Twenty-nine and 9 relevant articles were extracted for the 1998–2008 (period 1) and 2009–2019 (period 2) cohorts, respectively. Over the two time periods, SH was found to be a safe procedure, associated with statistically reduced operative time (in 13/21 studies during period 1 and in 3/8 studies during period 2), statistically less intraoperative bleeding (3/7 studies in period 1 and 1/1 study in period 2) and consistently less early postoperative pain on the visual analogue scale (12/15 studies in period 1 and 4/5 studies in period 2) resulting in shorter hospital stay (12/20 studies in period 1 and 2/2 studies in period 2) at the expense of a higher cost. In the longer term, although chronic pain in SH and OH patents is comparable, patient satisfaction with SH may decline with time and at 2-year follow-up OH appeared to be associated with greater patient satisfaction. Conclusions SH appears to be safe with potential advantages, at least in the short term, but the evidence is lacking at the moment to suggest its routine use in clinical practice.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to focus deeply on the short term to explain the relative long-term evolution of the Argentinian economy in the long and the short term. Design/methodology/approach The study of the long-term evolution of the Argentine economy and identifying the moment in which it began to lose ground compared to other developed economies, such as Australia and Canada, constitutes the central axis of the historiography of this country. However, an additional problem presented by the Argentine economy is its high volatility. For this reason, the long term should be influenced by the short term, an issue that requires a more detailed study of the cyclical behavior and a deep analysis of the relationship between the long and the short term. Findings The results obtained point to a cyclical development that influences the long-term evolution and, therefore, explains Argentina’s convergence process with Australia and Canada. Frequent deep busts and short booms characterize the Argentine cycle, offsetting its long-term growth potential. Originality/value Although the long term has been profusely studied in Argentina, the short term has not been analyzed to the same extent, which is surprising given the extreme volatility of this economy (Prebisch, 1950). The studies performed on economic cycles have always been partial, disconnected from the long term and carried out without much technical rigor.

The main purpose of the presented research was to investigate whether Slovene hotels that have a business strategy and strategic management accounting are more successful in comparison with those that still do not have a long-term business strategy and strategic management accounting.Hotels that have a business strategy and strategic management accounting are expected to be more successful in comparison with those that still do not have a long-term business strategy. Questionnaires were distributed to the management of selected Slovene hotels. The Slovene budgeting practices were assessed in Slovene large hotels, which have more than 100 rooms. The analysis was performed at the beginning of the years 2004 and 2008, respectively. Budgeting practices in Slovene hotels were assessed by analyzing the extent to which managers used strategic management accounting and the extent to which business strategies were implemented. The analysis provides evidence that hotels with a long-term business strategy are more successful than those that that have a short-term strategy, or are even without one. Although an improvement in the field of continuous budgeting in the five-year period can be ascertained, only a minority of Slovene hotels uses standard cost as a basis for budgeting. This was the first study that ascertained discrepancies between Slovenian budgeting practice and foreign best practices, which is undoubtedly of great interest for decision-makers on the level of individual hotel.

This research is realized in city of Peja, a city in the western part of Republic of Kosovo. In this research are included 40 small enterprises (27 in the center of the city and 13 in the periphery). From them 37 enterprises were established from familiar-individual capital, whereas only three enterprises were corporations. This research is led from two correlation hypotheses .The first hypothesis of this research is:”Strategic management has a positive relation with the empowering of the short-term and long-term objectives of the small enterprises”, is made correlative analysis and we have the statistical production [r= .502**, p smaller than .001], which supports the first hypothesis. Thus a genuine strategic management affects in the empowering and the reflection of the short-term and long-term objectives of small enterprises. The second hypothesis of this research was;”Business strategy affects in the rise of financial indicators”, is made the correlative analysis and we have this statistical production [r= -.220, p smaller than .172, a result that is not significant and it does not support the second hypothesis of this research.

This chapter approaches self-control via a problem arising in decision theoretic discussions of sequential choice within a broadly Humean conception of action and motivation. How can agents stick to their plans and honor their commitments in the face of temptation, if at the moment of choice the short-term temptation motivationally outweighs the long-term goal? After introducing the sequential choice puzzle in section 19.1, section 19.2 surveys suggestive psychological work on the mechanisms of self-control, pointing to the importance of how outcomes are framed. Section 19.3 offers a solution to the sequential choice problem in terms of frame-sensitive reasoning—i.e. reasoning that allows outcomes to be valued differently depending on how they are framed, even when the agent knows that she is dealing with two (or more) different ways of framing the same outcome. Section 19.4 argues that this type of quasi-cyclical, frame-sensitive reasoning can indeed be rational.

To determine the long-term dynamics of the Anapa bay-bar we analyzed aerial photographs 1941-1944, satellite images of 1960-80s and from 2003 to the present. In the analysis of the long-term variations in the water edge one has to take into account the configuration of the shoreline at the moment of survey and local short-term dynamics. The average value of the water edge displacement over 47 years was 23 m in the direction to the coast. There are areas of severe erosion on the northern and southern parts. The central part of the bay-bar can be called relatively stable. Regions of comparable erosion and accumulation alternate here. The obtained data clarified and gave a more detailed estimate of the evolution of the coastline dynamics of the Anapa bay-bar.

Multiple integrated health systems use frontline staff training in quality and process improvement, although the optimal method to determine training success remains unknown. The authors assessed the Partners Clinical Process Improvement Leadership Program’s short-term impact by evaluating data in project presentations during 14 courses between 2010 and 2016. Long-term impact was assessed via a graduate survey. Among 262 interprofessional teams, 180 (69%) achieved short-term improvement, including 78 (30%) achieving and 102 (39%) demonstrating improvement toward their project goal. Projects implementing ≥2 interventions were more likely to succeed. Of 231 graduates surveyed, 79% reported the ability to lead and 67% reported actual work on additional quality improvement projects. Ninety-seven percent of alumni reported a positive career impact. Hospital leadership support of clinical process improvement training meets short-term improvement needs and promotes long-term capacity for learning health systems.
