Falls are common among persons with late effects of polio (LEoP), which may lead to fear of falling and activity avoidance in everyday life. Here, we assessed the occurrence of fall-related activity avoidance among persons with LEoP and explored how these experiences influenced daily life. Fourteen ambulatory persons (seven women; mean age 70 years) with LEoP participated. They responded to the modified Survey of Activities and Fear of Falling in the Elderly (mSAFFE) and participated in individual interviews, which were analysed by systematic text condensation. Each quotation was deductively analysed from its representation with regard to mSAFFE. We found that many persons often avoided activities related to standing and walking, for example, taking a bath, performing household chores, walking outdoors, attending social events if there were stairs in the building and travelling by public transport, due to fear of falling, increased pain and fatigability. To facilitate the performance of daily activities participants expressed that strategic thinking and aids were important to use. In conclusion, fall-related activity avoidance is common in persons with LEoP, which negatively influence daily life and social participation. To increase daily functioning in this population, fall-related activity avoidance should be included in a multifaceted fall management program.

Fear of falling was associated with activity avoidance and subsequent reduction of functioning capacity in postmenopausal women. This study aimed to determine the influencing factors for fear-of-falling related activity avoidance in Korean postmenopausal women. The sample of 687 postmenopausal women living in six urban areas was recruited using stratified convenience sampling for the original survey. A secondary analysis was applied to survey data from 541 postmenopausal women aged 50–64 years who experienced some degree of fear of falling. A structured questionnaire was administered to measure fear of falling, fall efficacy, and activity avoidance. Among 541 postmenopausal women with a mean age of 56 years who perceived at least some fear of falling, 15% (n = 81) reported they avoided performing some, not all, activities of daily living due to fear of falling. Fear of falling was significantly associated with the level of activity avoidance (χ2 = 16.94, p < 0.001). In multivariate analyses, fear of falling and fall efficacy were significant predictors of activity avoidance in postmenopausal women after adjusting for age, education level, and chronic disease. Fear of falling and fall efficacy contributed independently to explain activity avoidance in postmenopausal women. It is important to identify fear of falling and activity avoidance as the focus of public health in order to prevent the vicious cycle of future falls.

In the elderly, fear of falling (FoF) can lead to activity restriction and affect quality of life (QoL). Our aim was to identify the characteristics of FoF in Parkinson's disease and assess its impact on QoL. We assessed FoF in 130 patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) on scales measuring perceived self-efficacy in performing a range of activities (FES), perceived consequences of falling (CoF), and activity avoidance (SAFFE). A significant difference was found in FoF between PD patients who had previously fallen and those who had not and between frequent and infrequent fallers. Patient-rated disability significantly influenced FoF. Difficulty in rising from a chair, difficulty turning, start hesitation, festination, loss of balance, and shuffling were the specific mobility problems which were associated with greater FoF in PD. Disability was the main predictor of FoF, additionally depression predicted perceived consequences of falling, while anxiety predicted activity avoidance. The FoF measures explained 65% of the variance of QoL in PD, highlighting the clinical importance of FoF. These results have implications for the clinical management of FoF in PD.

Introduction There is a need for development and validation of post-stroke fall-prevention programs. This qualitative study provides an inside look into participant-perceived outcomes of a new and innovative self-management intervention: Merging Yoga and Occupational Therapy. Method A qualitative approach was employed. Thirteen participants, who were more than 6 months post stroke and self-reported falling or a fear of falling, engaged in focus groups and individual interviews following participation in the intervention twice weekly for 8 weeks. Data from focus groups and individual interviews were analyzed using an iterative, inductive approach. Findings Five outcomes emerged from the line-by-line analysis: (1) improved abilities and capacities, (2) gained new knowledge, (3) enhanced engagement in activities, (4) improved relaxation, and (5) increased confidence and inspiration. Conclusion Participants experienced positive outcomes from engagement in a community-based multimodal fall-prevention self-management program for people post stroke.
