We presented and manufactured a triple-band terahertz (THz) metamaterial absorber with three concentric square ring metallic resonators, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) layer, and a metallic substrate. The simulation results demonstrate that the absorptivity of 99.5%, 86.4%, and 98.4% can be achieved at resonant frequency of 0.337, 0.496, and 0.718 THz, respectively. The experimental results show three distinct absorption peaks at 0.366, 0.512, and 0.751 THz, which is mostly agreement with the simulation. We analyzed the absorption mechanism from the distribution of electric and magnetic fields. The sensitivity of the three peaks of this triple-band absorber to the surrounding is 72, 103.5, 139.5 GHz/RIU, respectively. In addition, the absorber is polarization insensitive because of the symmetric configuration. The absorber can simultaneously exhibit high absorption effect at incident angles up to 60° for transverse electric (TE) polarization and 70° for transverse magnetic (TM) polarization. This presented terahertz metamaterial absorber with a triple-band absorption and easy fabrication can find important applications in biological sensing, THz imaging, filter and optical communication.

A facile design of a novel triple-band electromagnetic metamaterial absorber (MMA) with polarization insensitive property is proposed in this paper. Each unit of the MMA consists of upper copper resonator and bottom copper plate with middle dielectric FR-4 between them. The MMA performs three absorption peaks at 16.919 GHz, 21.084 GHz and 25.266 GHz with absorption rates 99.90%, 97.76% and 99.18%, respectively. The influence of the main structural parameters on the frequencies and absorption rates is analyzed. The absorption mechanism of the absorber is explained by electric field, magnetic field and surface current distributions, which is supported by the electromagnetic parameters, affected with magnetic resonance. The polarization-insensitivity of TE wave is verified by observing the effects of the polarization angle change from 0-90º. The MMA can be applied in radiation, spectrum imaging detector, electromagnetic wave modulator, and so on.

Abstract In this paper, an ultrathin dual-band metamaterial absorber (MMA) is designed. Its top layer consists of two nested split-ring resonators. The calculation result demonstrates that there are two distinct absorption peaks, which are 9.258GHz and 21.336GHz, with absorption rate of 99.78% and 96.91%. It also show polarization-insensitive for normal incident and its thickness is only 1.96% of the wavelength of its lowest absorption frequency. Moreover, we explore the MMA’s absorption mechanism and analyze the influence of main structural parameters on the MMA’s absorption characteristics. The proposed MMA has simple structure and high absorption, it can be applied in electromagnetic stealth, bolometers, sensor and other fields.

In this paper, a plasmonic perfect absorber (PPA) based on a silicon nanorod resonator (SNRR) for visible light is proposed and investigated numerically. The proposed PPA is only a two-layer nanostructure consisting of a SNRR periodic array and metal substrate. The perfect absorption mainly originates from excitation of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode in the SNRR structure. The absorption properties of this design can be adjusted by varying the radius (r) and height (h) of the SNRR structure. What is more, the stronger quad-band absorption can be achieved by combing four different radius of the SNRR in one period as a super unit-cell. Numerical simulation indicates that the designed quad-band PPA can achieve the absorbance of 99.99%, 99.8%, 99.8%, and 92.2% at 433.5 THz, 456 THz, 482 THz, and 504.5 THz, respectively. Further simulations show that the proposed PPA is polarization-insensitive for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The proposed PPA can be a desirable candidate for some potential applications in detecting, sensing, and visible spectroscopy.

In this work, we proposed a flexible broadband metamaterial perfect absorber (FBMPA) by exploiting a pasted conductive-graphene ink on a polyimide substrate. For the flat FBMPA, an absorption over 90% was found to cover a wide frequency range (from 7.88 to 18.01 GHz). The high-absorption feature was polarization-insensitive and regarded as stable with respect to the oblique incidence up to 30 degrees of electromagnetic wave. The high absorption was maintained well even when the absorber was wrapped. That is, the FBMPA was attached to cylindrical surfaces (with the varying radius from 4 to 50 cm). For both flat and curved states, the absorption mechanism was explained by the perfect impedance matching and the dielectric loss of the proposed absorber. Our work provides the groundwork for the commercialization of future meta-devices such as sensors, optical filters/switchers, photodetectors, and energy converters.

Abstract Developing a highly efficient and multiple-bands metamaterial absorber is a hot issue in recent era. In this paper, A multiple-bands metamaterial absorber has been presented which is based in X, Ku and K-band. Firstly, we have designed two single layer basic unit cell of X-shape and cross-shape, then they are arranged in the multi-layers structure form for the purpose of obtaining multiple- bands and wide band absorption. The proposed absorber is able to work in multiple bands because it has six peaks in the frequency range of 8–24 GHz with having near perfect absorption. Moreover, the sixth peak has a wideband absorption which is 2.93 GHz. Furthermore, the proposed absorber is also tested for polarization insensitivity and also for oblique incidence. Absorption was found polarization insensitive with almost perfect absorption.

In order to improve the stealth performance of antenna, a metamaterial absorber with high absorption, polarization-insensitive and wide angle based on the electromagnetic resonance is designed. Using of ultra-thin characteristic of absorber, they are attached to the microstrip antenna to reduce its radar cross section. The simulation results show that the new microstrip antenna’s radiation performance remains unchanged compared with conventional microstrip antenna and it has obvious RCS reduction in its working band. While the maximum reduction can reach 28dB at working frequency, and the in-band reduction of antenna is above 3dB. This indicates that the absorber can be used for antennas’ in-band stealth.
