Extensive open-pit mining activities in the Philippines since the 1970s up to the present confront the meaning of the “Church of the Poor”, a description that the Catholic Church in the Philippines uses to visualize its prophetic mission. Alongside mining, many more environmentally destructive industries are present in the poorest areas in the country, even though the Philippines is disaster-prone and one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to the devastating effects of the climate crisis. The environmental degradation has prompted many Filipino Catholic organizations and communities to act together through various campaigns to address the problem. The article examines a case of a faith-based community that rose to the challenge to address various environmental issues their community was and continues to experience. The community’s environmental activism presents a viable model for a re-imagined ecological care towards the “flourishing of all” as a response to Pamela McCarroll’s call to action to continue conversations on the many ways practical theology can move beyond anthropocentrism while focusing on social justice.

The introduction of popular religious practices traditionally held during major liturgical feasts in the Philippines has gathered Filipino migrants in Norwich, United Kingdom, into a dynamic ecclesial community. It has sustained their faith even as they struggle to face the many challenges of living and working abroad and keeping the faith without the comforts and certainties provided by a predominantly Catholic culture at home. They draw courage and consolation from participating in the year-round activities in their Filipino chaplaincies. The author’s pastoral voluntary work in the United Kingdom has been an experience of building an ecclesial community of Filipinos in diaspora, of providing means of support amidst crisis, and of accompanying them in their journey towards a better life and a more meaningful relationship with God. The paper proceeds in three steps. First, it enumerates the challenges faced by Filipino migrants in the practice of their Catholic faith. Second, it illustrates how these challenges were met through the introduction of religious traditions commonly practiced in the Philippines. Third, it offers some theological insights on the power of popular piety to nourish the faith of Filipino migrants and to form them to become dynamic agents of evangelization. Se fortalecen y reciben consuelo al participar de las actividades realizadas durante todo el año en sus capillas filipinas. El trabajo pastoral voluntario del autor en el Reino Unido ha sido el de construir una comunidad eclesial de filipinos en la diáspora, de dar apoyo en medio de crisis, y de acompañarles en su caminar hacia una vida mejor y a tener una relación más profunda con Dios. Este artículo se divide en tres secciones. En primer lugar, se enumeran los desafíos que los migrantes Filipinos han enfrentado en la práctica de su fe católica. En segundo lugar, se explica cómo se enfrentaron estos desafíos al introducir prácticas religiosas comúnmente practicadas en las Filipinas. En tercer lugar, ofrece algunas reflexiones teológicas sobre el poder de la piedad popular para nutrir la fe de los migrantes filipinos y para formarlos como agentes dinámicos de evangelización. During the last decades, monitoring the spatial growth of open-pit mining areas has become a common procedure in an effort to comprehend the influence that mining activities have on the adjacent land-use/land-cover types. Various case studies have been presented, focusing on land-cover mapping of complex mining landscapes. They highlight that a rapid as well as accurate approach is critical. This paper presents a methodological framework for a rapid delineation of open-pit mining area boundaries. For that purpose an Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) methodology is implemented. Sentinel-2 data were obtained and the Mean-Shift segmentation algorithm was employed. Among the many methods that have been presented in literature in order to evaluate the performance of an image segmentation, an unsupervised approach is carried out. A quantitative evaluation of segmentation accuracy leads to a more targeted selection of segmentation parameter values and as a consequence is of utmost importance. The proposed methodology was mainly conducted through python scripts and may constitute a guide for relevant studies.

This chapter explores how American writers described the Spanish friars as imperial models. Like Jacques Marquette and Junípero Serra, the friars were cast as benevolent civilizers but were particularly lauded for what many Americans believed to be their ability to maintain social order. It describes how the Spanish friars preserved existing state of affairs by upholding orthodoxy against Philippine transformations of Roman Catholicism, religiously inspired anticolonial rebellions, and establishing the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, a nationalist Catholic church. The chapter also talks about the many Americans that embraced the idea of Americanist Catholicism, which was embodied by U.S.-trained priests, as a tool for ensuring order while promoting religious liberty. It points out the lessons American writers and officials imagined the Catholic history of the Philippines might provide for the advancement of the U.S. colonial state.

The declaration of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in various provinces and cities in the Philippines did not impede the Catholic Church from celebrating its sacraments and popular devotions. Mired with poverty and various forms of economic and social limitations, the presence of God for Filipinos is an essential element in moving forward and surviving in a time of pandemic. Predominantly Roman Catholic in religious affiliation, seeking the face of God has been part of Filipinos' lives whenever a serious disaster would strike. This essay presents how the clergy, religious and lay communities in the Philippines have innovatively and creatively sustained treasured religious celebrations as a sign of communion and an expression of faith. In addition to online Eucharistic celebrations that are more of a privilege for some, culturally contextualised efforts were made during the Lenten Season and even on Sundays after Easter. This endeavour ends with a reflection on the Church as the sacrament of God in a time of pandemic. Pushed back to their homes, deprived of life's basic necessities and facing threats of social instability, unemployment and hunger, Filipinos through their innovative celebrations find in their communion with their Church the very presence of God acting significantly in their lives.

Large-scale mining disturbs wide areas of land. The development program for the mining industry, with an expected considerable increase in production output, aggravates the problem with even vaster territories exposed to the adverse anthropogenic impact. Recovery of mining-induced ecosystems in the mineral-extracting regions becomes the top priority objective. There are many restoration mechanisms, and they should be used in integration and be highly technologically intensive as the environmental impact is many-sided. This involves pollution of water, generation of much waste and soil disturbance which is the most typical of open pit mining. Scale disturbance of land, withdrawal of farming land, land pollution and littering are critical problems to the solved in the first place. One of the way outs is highquality reclamation. This article reviews the effective rules and regulations on reclamation. The mechanism is proposed for the legal control of disturbed land reclamation on a regional and federal level. Highly technologically intensive recovery of mining-induced landscape will be backed up by the natural environment restoration strategy proposed in the Disturbed Land Reclamation Concept.
