In this paper we present a simple stand-alone system performing the autonomous acquisition of multiple pictures all around large objects, i.e., objects that are too big to be photographed from any side just with a camera held by hand. In this approach, a camera carried by a drone (an off-the-shelf quadcopter) is employed to carry out the acquisition of an image sequence representing a valid dataset for the 3D reconstruction of the captured scene. Both the drone flight and the choice of the viewpoints for shooting a picture are automatically controlled by the developed application, which runs on a tablet wirelessly connected to the drone, and controls the entire process in real time. The system and the acquisition workflow have been conceived with the aim to keep the user intervention minimal and as simple as possible, requiring no particular skill to the user. The system has been experimentally tested on several subjects of different shapes and sizes, showing the ability to follow the requested trajectory with good robustness against any flight perturbations. The collected images are provided to a scene reconstruction software, which generates a 3D model of the acquired subject. The quality of the obtained reconstructions, in terms of accuracy and richness of details, have proved the reliability and efficacy of the proposed system.

Paper approaches some characteristics and bioengineering applications of a handheld depth sensor for low-cost 3D scanning and reconstruction. The Kinect depth sensor used in this work was launched on June 2009 and was based around a gaming webcam peripheral. The Kinect sensor uses a structured light technique in order to develop real-time 3D surfaces. The 3D model of anatomic surface may have a lot of bioengineering applications. Some observations and comparisons are presented in connection with the scanning and 3D reconstruction of different anatomic surfaces.

We designed a method for creating 3D models of objects and areas from two aerial images acquired from an UAV. The models are generated automatically and in real-time, and consist in dense and true-colour reconstructions of the considered areas, which give the impression to the operator to be physically present within the scene. The proposed method only needs a cheap compact camera, mounted on a small UAV. No additional instrumentation is necessary, so that the costs are very limited. The method consists of two main parts: the design of the acquisition system and the 3D reconstruction algorithm. In the first part, the choices for the acquisition geometry and for the camera parameters are optimized, in order to yield the best performance. In the second part, a reconstruction algorithm extracts the 3D model from the two acquired images, maximizing the accuracy under the real-time constraint. A test was performed in monitoring a construction yard, obtaining very promising results. Highly realistic and easy-to-interpret 3D models of objects and areas of interest were produced in less than one second, with an accuracy of about 0.5m. For its characteristics, the designed method is suitable for video-surveillance, remote sensing and monitoring, especially in those applications that require intuitive and reliable information quickly, as disasters monitoring, search and rescue and area surveillance.

Most of the 3D reconstruction requirements of microscopic scenes exist in industrial detection, and this scene requires real-time object reconstruction and can get object surface information quickly. However, this demand is challenging to obtain for micro scenarios. The reason is that the microscope’s depth of field is shallow, and it is easy to blur the image because the object’s surface is not in the focus plane. Under the video microscope, the images taken frame by frame are mostly defocused images. In the process of 3D reconstruction, a single sheet or a few 2D images are used for geometric-optical calculation, and the affine transformation is used to obtain the 3D information of the object and complete the 3D reconstruction. The feature of defocus image is that its complete information needs to be restored by a whole set of single view defocus image sequences. The defocused image cannot complete the task of affine transformation due to the lack of information. Therefore, using defocus image sequence to restore 3D information has higher processing difficulty than ordinary scenes, and the real-time performance is more difficult to guarantee. In this paper, the surface reconstruction process based on point-cloud data is studied. A Delaunay triangulation method based on plane projection and synthesis algorithm is used to complete surface fitting. Finally, the 3D reconstruction experiment of the collected image sequence is completed. The experimental results show that the reconstructed surface conforms to the surface contour information of the selected object.

Abstract. Modern surveying technologies allow to obtain a digital copy of cultural assets, which can be more or less adherent to reality. When 3D reconstruction concerns historical architecture, it is necessary to deal with a series of issues that may concern choosing of the most suitable survey methodologies, processing of acquired data, management of large amounts of data, making data always upgradable and easily editable, etc. By addressing these issues in advance and adopting an extremely interdisciplinary approach in the entire process, it is possible to identify the best methodologies to use in order to achieve a versatile 3D model. This paper describes an ongoing research aimed at the creation of a multifunctional digital model of one of the most important 17th century wooden theatres in Europe, the Farnese Theatre in Parma. The main aim is to generate a tool able to respond simultaneously to the different needs that have arisen in recent years, mostly related to the documentation, preservation, valorization and dissemination of knowledge about the monument. This article describes the project and the adopted methodology, focusing mainly on survey and modeling phases. Particular attention will also be paid to the process of reconstruction of the original decorations of the proscenium, completely lost after an Allied air raid in 1944. The illustrated methodologies define a possible workflow to be adapted in other similar contexts. Finally, possible uses of the generated model will be also briefly illustrated.

The compaction quality of the subgrade is directly related to the service life of the road. Effective control of the subgrade construction process is the key to ensuring the compaction quality of the subgrade. Therefore, real-time, comprehensive, rapid and accurate prediction of construction compaction quality through informatization detection method is an important guarantee for speeding up construction progress and ensuring subgrade compaction quality. Based on the function of the system, this paper puts forward the principle of system development and the development mode used in system development, and displays the development system in real-time to achieve the whole process control of subgrade construction quality.

The article is devoted to solving one of the most important problems of the development of the sugar industry in Russia – the modernization of sugar production processes. Today, sugar production is actively being modernized, shifting most of its processes to the path of avomatization and optimization to improve the quality of products. This article describes one of the main ways to obtain information about the concentration of sucrose in syrup in the production of sugar.
