The interdisciplinary field of archaeometry covers a wide range of subject categories and disciplines in relation to science and humanities. It is a well-established academic field of study and accredited part of higher education. Since its inception, the nomenclature designation of archaeometry signifies the appropriate methodology applied to archaeological materials and questions emerging from this field, regarding monuments, artifacts, and the reconstruction and management of landscape bearing cultural assets. The measurements of tangible culture denote significant information, such as chronology, authenticity, technology, characterization, provenance, discovering buried antiquities, ancient-day life activities, and three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions and modelling; furthermore, proxy data collected from environmental dynamic non-liner perturbations, which link local ecosystems with dwellings, are gathered by academia to study the past. The traditional rooting signifies the cultural legacies of people, which define the human desire and the confidence of memory and future trends. Beyond the mere study of the past, archaeometry’s role increasingly proves affinity to prosperity, if properly managed. The major archaeometrical contributions in cultural heritage and archaeology in general are reviewed herein, and we present the policies that could develop archaeometrical data into a sustainable stage of local, regional, and national economic development. Τhe United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conventions for the documentation and protection of cultural heritage via new technologies and archaeometry are reviewed and connected to development strategies and sustainable development goals.

Fingerprints play a central role in any field where person identification is required. In forensics and biometrics, three-dimensional fingerprint-based imaging technologies, and corresponding recognition methods, have been vastly investigated. In cultural heritage, preliminary studies provide evidence that the three-dimensional impressions left on objects from the past (ancient fingerprints) are of paramount relevance to understand the socio-cultural systems of former societies, to possibly identify a single producer of multiple potteries, and to authenticate the artist of a sculpture. These findings suggest that the study of ancient fingerprints can be further investigated and open new avenues of research. However, the potential for capturing and analyzing ancient fingerprints is still largely unexplored in the context of cultural heritage research. In fact, most of the existing studies have focused on plane fingerprint representations and commercial software for image processing. Our aim is to outline the opportunities and challenges of digital fingerprint recognition in answering a range of questions in cultural heritage research. Therefore, we summarize the fingerprint-based imaging technologies, reconstruction methods, and analyses used in biometrics that could be beneficial to the study of ancient fingerprints in cultural heritage. In addition, we analyze the works conducted on ancient fingerprints from potteries and ceramic/fired clay sculptures. We conclude with a discussion on the open challenges and future works that could initiate novel strategies for ancient fingerprint acquisition, digitization, and processing within the cultural heritage community.

AbstractA wide range of anthropogenic structures exist in the marine environment with the extent of these set to increase as the global offshore renewable energy industry grows. Many of these pose acute risks to marine wildlife; for example, tidal energy generators have the potential to injure or kill seals and small cetaceans through collisions with moving turbine parts. Information on fine scale behaviour of animals close to operational turbines is required to understand the likely impact of these new technologies. There are inherent challenges associated with measuring the underwater movements of marine animals which have, so far, limited data collection. Here, we describe the development and application of a system for monitoring the three-dimensional movements of cetaceans in the immediate vicinity of a subsea structure. The system comprises twelve hydrophones and software for the detection and localisation of vocal marine mammals. We present data demonstrating the systems practical performance during a deployment on an operational tidal turbine between October 2017 and October 2019. Three-dimensional locations of cetaceans were derived from the passive acoustic data using time of arrival differences on each hydrophone. Localisation accuracy was assessed with an artificial sound source at known locations and a refined method of error estimation is presented. Calibration trials show that the system can accurately localise sounds to 2m accuracy within 20m of the turbine but that localisations become highly inaccurate at distances greater than 35m. The system is currently being used to provide data on rates of encounters between cetaceans and the turbine and to provide high resolution tracking data for animals close to the turbine. These data can be used to inform stakeholders and regulators on the likely impact of tidal turbines on cetaceans.

Summary Objectives: To provide an editorial introduction to the 2010 IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics with an overview of its contents and contributors. Methods: A brief overview of the main theme, and an outline of the purposes, contents, format, and acknowledgment of contributions for the 2010 IMIA Yearbook. Results: This 2010 issue of the IMIA Yearbook highlights important developments in the building of workforce capacity in medical informatics worldwide, covering activities in research, education and practice in this interdisciplinary field. Progress towards educating and keeping professionals in the field up-to-date is complemented by outreach to the wide range of disciplines and biomedical and health specialties that are covered by this very broad field, identified from the recent literature, illustrated by selected papers published during the past 12 months.xs Conclusion: Reviews and Surveys of the main research sub-fields in biomedical informatics in the Yearbook provide an overview of progress and current challenges across the spectrum of the discipline.

Modern Conservation of Cultural Heritage (CCH) is an interdisciplinary field, comprising arts, crafts, architecture, humanities, IT (Information Technology) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Several decades of extended research have shown the importance of spatial skills and spatial literacy for success in STEM. A major part of cultural heritage is visual, and three-dimensional. A sufficient level of spatial understanding and spatial skills is needed to understand, study and preserve cultural heritage. Visualization is especially helpful in teaching and learning the interdisciplinary CCH. However, the necessity of developing spatial visual literacy, and acquisition of relevant theoretical knowledge by experts and educators in CCH has not yet been commonly accepted. This paper outlines an innovative Methodology for developing Spatial Visual Literacy (MSVL) - a crucial tool for CCH and heritage education, - and selected perspectives of its feasibility and applicability to teacher training and also wider interdisciplinary uses. The paper addresses selected lessons from application of some elements of the Methodology as part of previous research and educational scenarios for different objectives and target audiences, from high-school, undergraduate, PhD students, to experts from different areas of expertise within the CCH, to facilitate its uses for teacher training in heritage education. La Conservación del Patrimonio Cultural (CCH) es un campo interdisciplinario, que comprende artes, artesanía, arquitectura, humanidades, TICs (Tecnología de la información) y STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería, Matemáticas). Varias décadas de investigación han demostrado la importancia tanto de de las habilidades espaciales, como de la alfabetización espacial para el éxito en STEM. Una parte importante del patrimonio cultural es visual y tridimensional. Se necesita un nivel suficiente de comprensión espacial, así como habilidades espaciales para poder comprender, estudiar y preservar el patrimonio cultural. La visualización, es especialmente útil para enseñar y aprender el patrimonio desde un punto de vista interdisciplinar. Sin embargo, aún no se ha aceptado por parte de expertos y educadores en patrimonnio la necesidad de desarrollar la alfabetización visual espacial y la adquisición de conocimientos teóricos relevantes sobre la misma. Este trabajo presenta una metodología innovadora para desarrollar la alfabetización visual espacial (MSVL, por sus siglas en inglés), una herramienta crucial para la conservación y la educación del patrimonio, y perspectivas seleccionadas de su factibilidad y aplicabilidad a la capacitación docente, así como usos interdisciplinarios más amplios. El documento aborda una selección de ejemplos de aplicación de algunos elementos de la Metodología como parte de investigaciones previas y escenarios educativos con diferentes objetivos y audiencias distintas, desde estudiantes de secundaria, bachillerato o doctorado, hasta expertos de diferentes áreas de experiencia dentro de la conservación del patrimonio, buscando facilitar su uso en la formación docente en educación patrimonial.

ResumenLa metodología BIM (Building Information Modelling), ampliamente implantada en el sector de la edificación y de la arquitectura, ha transformado la manera de desarrollar tanto los proyectos como las obras de construcción. Si bien la esencia de esta metodología se basa en la generación de un modelo tridimensional, la visualización de éste a través de dispositivos bidimensionales hace que la experiencia e interacción con el modelo no sea plena. Es por ello que la aparición en el mercado de nuevas tecnologías como la realidad virtual y la realidad aumentada, abren un amplio abanico de posibilidades ligadas al sector de la construcción. En este sentido, en Acciona Ingeniería se ha desarrollado un proyecto piloto en colaboración con Trimble y Microsoft donde a partir de un modelo BIM se ha creado una realidad aumentada basada en hologramas, que permitan recrear una simulación aplicada a la construcciónAbstractThe BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, widely implemented in the building and architecture sector, has transformed the way to develop both projects and construction works. The industry of sport currently has a big impact on our society, in areas as diverse as economics, mass media, health or politics. As a result of this new trend, a specific academic field, identified as ‘Sport Management’ has emerged in the past years. A study field that appears to have experienced a substantive growth over a short period of time. This paper has conducted a review on the relevant aspects that have shaped the identity of Sport Management as an academic field. For that purpose, documentary sources have been used as reference with a main focus in those produced by relevant authors of the Sport Management field, granting special attention to the theoretical construction of the field, its main academic journals, topics and research trends. The final reflections of this investigation show the main developments on this academic field, as well the broad opportunities that the Sport Management investigation field offers to develop an academic and/or professional career and to look into the future with optimism, as there is still a wide range of investigation areas to explore/develop under this theme.

The business of journalism has an extensive, storied, and often romanticized history. Newspaper reporting has long shaped the way that we see the world, played key roles in exposing scandals, and has even been alleged to influence international policy. The past several years have seen the newspaper industry in a state of crisis, with Twitter and Facebook ushering in the rise of citizen journalism and a deprofessionalization of the industry, plummeting readership and revenue, and municipal and regional papers shuttering or being absorbed into corporate behemoths. Now billionaires, most with no journalism experience but lots of power and strong views, are stepping in to purchase newspapers, both large and small. This addition to the What Everyone Needs to Know® series looks at the past, present and future of journalism, considering how the development of the industry has shaped the present and how we can expect the future to roll out. It addresses a wide range of questions, from whether objectivity was only a conceit of late twentieth century reporting, largely behind us now; how digital technology has disrupted journalism; whether newspapers are already dead to the role of non-profit journalism; the meaning of “transparency” in reporting; the way that private interests and governments have created their own advocacy journalism; whether social media is changing journalism; the new social rules of old media outlets; how franchised media is addressing the problem of disappearing local papers; and the rise of citizen journalism and hacker journalism. This paper analyses the role played by the new multimedia technologies for the development of the offer of museums. The role of museums is changing: while in the past the goal of mere cataloguing and preservation prevailed, today these institutions are making efforts to increase the number of visitors and attract new segments of demand, as well as qualify their offer. It emerges, for all these reasons, the need to modify the positioning and the offering of cultural attractions, strengthening them in experiential terms. Therefore, in terms of management of cultural heritage it is necessary to focus on the ability to get closer to the public and to create richer and striking experiences for visitors through new technologies. The paper presents some of the most interesting cases of Italian audience-driven museums (Hopper-Greenhill, 1994) focused on innovative ITC support.

ABSTRACTThree-dimensional modeling and printing of museum artifacts have a growing role in public engagement and teaching—introducing new cultural heritage stakeholders and potentially allowing more democratic access to museum collections. This destabilizes traditional relationships between museums, collections, researchers, teachers and students, while offering dynamic new ways of experiencing objects of the past. Museum events and partnerships such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art “Hackathon”; the MicroPasts initiative; and Sketchfab for Museums and Cultural Heritage, encourage non-traditional methods of crowd-sourcing and software collaboration outside the heritage sector. The wider distribution properties of digitized museum artifacts also have repercussions for object-based and kinesthetic learning at all levels, as well as for experiential and culturally sensitive aspects of indigenous heritage. This article follows the existing workflow from model creation to classroom: considering the processes, problems, and applications of emerging digital visualization technologies from both a museum and pedagogical perspective.

Ethnographic accounts of animal pulverization using stone grinding implements have led archaeologists to believe that this same behavior took place in the past. This important subsistence activity can now be confirmed through the immunological analysis of archaeological materials. Small-mammal blood-protein residue has been identified immunologically for the first time on milling equipment from two archaeological sites in southern California. Immunoprotein trace analysis has the potential for a wide range of applications in the study of prehistory.
