The 4D Maxwell theory with single-sided planar boundary is considered. As a consequence of the presence of the boundary, two broken Ward identities are recovered, which, on-shell, give rise to two conserved currents living on the edge. A Kaç-Moody algebra formed by a subset of the bulk fields is obtained with central charge proportional to the inverse of the Maxwell coupling constant, and the degrees of freedom of the boundary theory are identified as two vector fields, also suggesting that the 3D theory should be a gauge theory. Finally the holographic contact between bulk and boundary theory is reached in two inequivalent ways, both leading to a unique 3D action describing a new gauge theory of two coupled vector fields with a topological Chern-Simons term with massive coefficient. In order to check that the 3D projection of 4D Maxwell theory is well defined, we computed the energy-momentum tensor and the propagators. The role of discrete symmetries is briefly discussed.

Bosonic representations of N=2 superconformal algebra are studied. We show that the free energy momentum tensor decomposes into an orthogonal sum of the interacting bosonic model (IBM) and a coset-like tensors. We define the notion of flags of models and show that the central charge does not decrease along the flags. We examine the conditions for an arbitrary un-oriented graph to form an IBM. We discuss several properties of the chiral algebra of these models and examine the role of the continuous parameters by studying an example. Finally we discuss the relations between these models and the N=2 superconformal coset models.

The topological Chern-Simons gauge theory is studied in the framework of perturbation theory. Both dimensional and F2 regularizations are used. We demonstrate the vanishing of the beta function up to three loops, the absence of diffeomorphism anomaly in the calculation of two- and three-point functions, and the validity of a topological Ward identity by finite renormalization of the coupling constant. The regularization dependence of the finite renormalization and an ambiguity in the dimensional regularization are also discussed.

Within the scope of Bianchi type-IX cosmological model we have studied the role of spinor field in the evolution of the Universe. It is found that unlike the diagonal Bianchi models in this case the components of energy–momentum tensor of spinor field along the principal axis are not the same (i.e., [Formula: see text]), even in the absence of spinor field nonlinearity. The presence of nontrivial non-diagonal components of energy–momentum tensor of the spinor field imposes severe restrictions both on geometry of space–time and on the spinor field itself. As a result the space–time turns out to be either locally rotationally symmetric or isotropic. In this paper we considered the Bianchi type-IX space–time both for a trivial b, that corresponds to standard Bianchi type-IX and the one with a non-trivial b. It was found that a positive self-coupling constant λ1 gives rise to an oscillatory mode of expansion, while a trivial λ1 leads to rapid expansion at the early stage of evolution.

We introduce a novel Skyrme-like conserved current in the effective theory of pions and vector mesons based on the idea of hidden local symmetry. The associated charge is equivalent to the skyrmion charge for any smooth configuration. In addition, there exist singular configurations that can be identified as N_f=1Nf=1 baryons charged under the new symmetry. Under this identification, the vector mesons play the role of the Chern-Simons vector fields living on the quantum Hall droplet that forms the N_f=1Nf=1 baryon. We propose that this current is the correct effective expression for the baryon current at low energies. This proposal gives a unified picture for the two types of baryons and allows them to continuously transform one to the other in a natural way. In addition, Chern-Simons dualities on the droplet can be interpreted as a result of Seiberg-like duality between gluons and vector mesons.

A single-sided boundary is introduced in the three-dimensional Chern–Simons model. It is shown that only one boundary condition for the gauge fields is possible, which plays the twofold role of chirality condition and bosonization rule for the two-dimensional Weyl fermion describing the degrees of freedom of the edge states of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. The symmetry on the boundary is derived, which determines the effective two-dimensional action, whose equation of motion coincides with the continuity equation of the Tomonaga–Luttinger theory. The role of Lorentz symmetry and of discrete symmetries on the boundary is also discussed.

Treating Einstein's theory as a gauge theory of Lorentz group, we decompose the gravitational connection (the gauge potential of Lorentz group) Γμ into the restricted connection of the maximal Abelian subgroup of Lorentz group and the valence connection which transforms covariantly under Lorentz gauge transformation. With this decomposition we show that the Einstein's theory can be decomposed into the restricted part made of the restricted connection which has the full Lorentz gauge invariance and the valence part made of the valence connection which plays the role of gravitational source of the restricted gravity. We show that there are two different Abelian decomposition of Einstein's theory, the light-like (or null) decomposition and the non light-like (or non-null) decomposition. In this decomposition the role of the metric gμν is replaced by a four-index metric tensor gμν which transforms covariantly under the Lorentz group, and the metric-compatibility condition ∇αgμν = 0 of the connection is replaced by the gauge and generally covariant condition [Formula: see text]. The decomposition shows the existence of a restricted theory of gravitation which has the full general invariance but is much simpler and has less physical degrees of freedom than Einstein's theory. Moreover, it tells that the restricted gravity can be written as an Abelian gauge theory, which implies that the graviton can be described by a massless spin-one field.

Abstract In this work we propose a simple and systematic framework for including edge modes in gauge theories on manifolds with boundaries. We argue that this is necessary in order to achieve the factorizability of the path integral, the Hilbert space and the phase space, and that it explains how edge modes acquire a boundary dynamics and can contribute to observables such as the entanglement entropy. Our construction starts with a boundary action containing edge modes. In the case of Maxwell theory for example this is equivalent to coupling the gauge field to boundary sources in order to be able to factorize the theory between subregions. We then introduce a new variational principle which produces a systematic boundary contribution to the symplectic structure, and thereby provides a covariant realization of the extended phase space constructions which have appeared previously in the literature. When considering the path integral for the extended bulk + boundary action, integrating out the bulk degrees of freedom with chosen boundary conditions produces a residual boundary dynamics for the edge modes, in agreement with recent observations concerning the contribution of edge modes to the entanglement entropy. We put our proposal to the test with the familiar examples of Chern-Simons and BF theory, and show that it leads to consistent results. This therefore leads us to conjecture that this mechanism is generically true for any gauge theory, which can therefore all be expected to posses a boundary dynamics. We expect to be able to eventually apply this formalism to gravitational theories.

The variational ansatz for the ground state wavefunctional of QCD is found to capture the antiscreening behaviour that contributes the dominant "-4" to the β-function and leads to asymptotic freedom. By considering an SU (N) purely gauge theory in the Hamiltonian formalism and choosing the Coulomb gauge, the origins of all screening and antiscreening contributions in gluon processes are found in terms of the physical degrees of freedom. The overwhelming antiscreening contribution of "-4" is seen to originate in the renormalisation of a Coulomb interaction by a transverse gluon. The lesser screening contribution of " [Formula: see text]" is seen to originate in processes involving transverse gluon interactions. It is thus apparent how the variational ansatz must be developed to capture the full running of the QCD coupling constant.

Ultraviolet (uv) divergences are canceled in the effective action of the D=3 Chern-Simons (CS) gauge theory but regularization is needed. It is impossible to introduce gauge invariant regularization and conserve the parity of the classical action. As a result, in the limit when regularization is removed the finite contribution to the effective action induced by parity-violating regulators remains which being added to the classical action leads to additive integer-valued renormalization of the coupling constant.
