scholarly journals The influence of an online virtual situated environment on a Chinese learning community

This study used an online virtual environment to create and develop a Chinese learning community. The purposes of research were (1) to enhance the Chinese learners’ oral Chinese communication skills and (2) to change the community members’ Chinese speaking and teaching behavior. This is an action research. The research tried to create a community in a virtual environment. The research results showed that (1) a virtual community can enhance learner’s Chinese competence, and (2) future Chinese teachers’ instructional and leading skills can be developed in a virtual community situation.

Multi-user virtual communities have become an accepted fundamental component of communication whereby community members share information and knowledge for mutual learning or problem solving.Virtual communities in a multi-user virtual environment (MUVE) have evolved into active social networks, formulating an alternative social existence and this phenomenon warrants further investigations. In these virtual social networks (VSNs), member participation is essential for their success. Therefore, developing knowledge on how to manage and sustain participation of members in VSNs fills a gap in our academic understanding of the dynamics underpinning the processes of virtual community development. This article aims to address these issues by extending the theory of sense of community into a virtual context (SOVC) and by integrating it with other communication theory of U&G.

This research aims to promote the development of the character of learning community at Madrasah Tsanawiyah of Bantul Regency Yogyakarta, and two problems posed to be addressed: why the character of community learning pattern does not realize as it has been expected, and how does the development of the character of learning community at MTs of Bantul look like? The research uses the Research and Development model that is consisted of four stages: exploration, development, tests, and dissemination. The data were collected by means of observatiosn, interviews, questionaire, and review of documentation. The results show: (1) the character of learning community at the MTs in Bantul Regency has not been fully established because the teachers were not active in preparing their lesson study, and they did not benefit from it. Also, they were too busy in fulfilling their obligations as teachers; (2) the development of the character of learning community at MTs in Bantul could be implemented through Classroom Action Research-based lesson study plans which are consisted of five stages: consolidation of lesson study concepts, explanation of Classroom Action Research as a form of scientific publication, planning, implementation of action, and reflection.

We utilized simulated patient scenarios in a virtual environment to improve students’ communication skills during handovers. To determine how students performed during the scenarios, we assessed several behaviors: structured communication, closed-loop communication, and asking clarification questions. Results revealed that the students’ performance was stronger in the first area (structure communication) and weaker in the second (closed-loop communication) and third (asking clarifying questions) areas.

For several decades, community interventions have promoted community development with strategies involving capacity building, advocacy, social change, and empowerment. Although community interventions intend to ameliorate social and economic inequalities, there is still a need to evaluate the outcomes of Participatory Action Research (PAR). PAR approaches have demonstrated to be a helpful tool for addressing and identifying community issues and strengths, while leading community members into action. The PAR approach described in this case study of “Ciudad Renace” (Town Reborn)—the Concerns Report Method (CRM)—provided a process for the community to come together and identify main issues, organize, and take actions. The findings suggest multiple activities and outcomes in areas like environmental contamination, social services, and education. Participatory methodologies like the Concerns report Method provided opportunities for community members to become engaged in pursing issues and addressing their own needs. The implications for community psychology research and practice are discussed.

Linden Lab’s Second Life (SL) is well-known for its hands-off approach to user conflict-resolution. Although users are given tools to mute and block individual accounts as well as ban undesirable avatars from user-owned land, that does not prevent determined, malicious users from disrupting communities and harassing individuals. This case study focuses on two such malicious users exemplary of two specific types of malevolent virtual world actors: in-world griefers and online stalkers. As part of a decade-long ethnographic research project within the Cypris Chat English language learning community in SL, this paper utilizes data gleaned from notes on participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and first-hand encounters. It categorizes the disparate strategies these individuals have used over the years in their attempts to disrupt group cohesion, sow distrust between students and teachers, humiliate individuals, and foment an atmosphere of fear and anxiety. It then reviews the methods community members used to defend themselves from such attacks and analyzes the efficacy of these strategies. This study builds on our understanding of harassment in virtual worlds and acts as a cautionary tale for future virtual world educators and community leaders considering the development of their own online classes and groups.

Building numerous and active virtual tourist communities involved in the tourist brand, connected with product, attraction or travel destination is a significant challenge for a dynamic and competitive tourist market. The main aim of presented pilot study was the drawing up guidelines for development of users engagement of selected virtual tourist communities on the example of Facebook. For that purpose a ranking of the most popular indicators of thematic areas, around which virtual tourist communities are formed was built. Simultaneously a typology of members of virtual tourist communities was presented as well as motives for the participation in communities gathered around the definite subject matter were analysed.

ABSTRACTThis study aims to improve students' mathematical communication skills through the application of cooperative learning model Match Mine on the subject of integers in classVII MTs2 Medan. This type of researchis a classroom action research. The subjects were students of class VII-1 MTs 2 Terra in TA 2014/2015 which amounted to 42students. The object of this research is the students' mathematical communication skills through cooperative learning model Match Mine on  the     subject of         integers. The research instrument used is th eobservation and test mathematical communication skills. This study consisted two cycles and at the end of each cycleis given test comunication is mathematical ability. Before given, test           first      validated to the  validator. The results showed that cooperative learning model in the material Match Mine integer scan improve students' mathematical communication. It is seen from the results before action is given, the provisi on of diagnostics tests of 42 students only as many as 15 students (35.72%), which reached a value ≥ 65 with an average value of 58.18 class. After agiven action, the first mathematical communication skills tests in the first cycle, from 42 students as many as 25 students (59.52%) reached a value ≥ 65 with an average value of 66.95 class. From theanalysis ofthe test data communication capabilities mathematicalI on the second cycle of 42 people found that the students are 37 students (88.09%) reached a value ≥65 with an average value of 74.38 class. Based on observation, learning management research conducted in the first cycle, including both categories with a scoreof 2.87. Furthermore,in the second cycle, the researcher's ability to manage the learning increased to 3.40 so very good category. Based on the above results, it can be conclude edthatby implementing cooperative learning model Match Mine can improve students' mathematica lcommunication on the subject of integers in class VII MTs 2 Medan. Suggestions submitted to the seventh grade math teacher at MTs Negeri 2 Medan advis able to provide training to students that many require students to provide arguments that students' mathematical communication skills especially in explaining aspect scan be increased, as well asprovide the opportunity for students express ideas/ideas verbally/ writing in the learning process, andusing learning modelKeywords : mathematical communication, communication, secondary school, classroom action                      research, match mine.
