The paper highlights the main motivation aspects of military highly specialized language training of future intelligence officers of Ukrainian Armed Forces. The motivation resources for forming the professional foreign language competence of military students of higher military educational establishments are determined. The effective conditions for studying professional terminology as the basis for the skills of a future expert are specified. The necessity of organizing an effective training process of studying professional terms is substantiated with the aim of creating the most effective conditions for learning professional terms for terminology, the latter being the basis of professional communication. The algorithm for introducing highly specialized terminology is outlined in order to better comprehend and reveal the essence of the concept and structure of the terms. The emphasis is laid on the technique of introducing highly specialized terminology. Thus the process of foreign language classes organization makes it possible to master professional texts in the original. The authors maintain that main methods of rendering contemporary English military vocabulary (single- and multi-component terminology, abbreviations and shortenings, set terminological units, neologisms) into Ukrainian are as follows: lexical equivalent translation, transformation translation borrowing (transcription / transliteration), descriptive translation, loan translation and others. The difficulties in rendering military vocabulary of the NATO publications are related to the pragmatic aspects of translation.

Abstract University level students of English as a Foreign Language in Japan, enrolled in a special class for students who had failed English, did a semester of extensive reading in place of the traditional curriculum. Their gains in reading comprehension were significantly greater than a comparison group of traditionally taught regular students, and they clearly enjoyed the class. Despite the growing amount of research supporting the use of extensive reading for improving second language competence (e.g. ELLEY and MANGUBHAI, 1983; TUDOR and HAFIZ, 1989; HAFIZ and TUDOR, 1989; ELLEY, 1991; PILGREEN and KRASHEN, 1993; CHO and KRASHEN, 1994; (1995a), (1995b); CONSTANTINO, 1994), many teachers are still uncertain about how effective it is. Some maintain that extensive reading will only benefit more successful and more motivated students, and will not help those who are unmotivated and who have not done well in language classes. These poor students, it is argued, lack the grammatical knowledge and vocabulary that is necessary for reading comprehension and enjoyment. In this study, we investigate whether so called “bad students” or failures in EFL could improve with an extensive reading treatment.

The study provides a detailed analysis of recent research and publications on the notion of readiness for professionally oriented foreign language communication and its components, which allowed to establish links with the concept of readiness of future bachelors of law for professionally oriented foreign language communication. At the moment the problem of forming this quality at law schools in Ukraine is rather urgent as their students lack a good command in English which is proved by the results of the single entrance exam in foreign languages for applicant intending to do a master's course, as they are quite disappointing. Thus, it requires a review of approaches to forming the readiness of future bachelors of law for professionally oriented foreign language communication. Through the prism of the peculiarities of the legal profession, the author distinguished the immanent features of this concept such as multilevel, i.e. the presence of a certain structure, built due to the influence of mental processes, personality traits, and showing of foreign language competence, which can be transformed due to proper training and manifested in the future activities of legal professional due to presence of a set of knowledge, skills and abilities to use legal language in the process of professional communication. This allowed to determine the structure of the analyzed category, which contains motivational, cognitive, activity and reflection components. The motivational component includes a combination of such legal students’ qualities as interest in learning a foreign language for professional purposes, as well as relevant needs, motives, values, indicating the desire to constantly develop foreign language competence and ability to communicate in it. The cognitive element of the studied readiness presupposes the presence of linguistic and professional knowledge, an idea of the essence of foreign language communication in the legal sphere, the ability to project the results of one’s studies for future activities. The activity component is interpreted as a set of practical skills and abilities application of which acts as a prerequisite of successful communication on professional topics. The presence of a reflective component presupposes students’ ability to reflection, adequate self-esteem, control of their own foreign language communicative activities and objective assessment of interlocutors’ communicative behaviour.

Foreign language competence formation includes several components. One of them is lexical skills formation. This article focuses on the use of online dictionaries in the process of translation practice conducted by second-year students mastering the program "Translator in the field of professional communication" at Samara State Technical University as an effective tool for the formation and development lexical competence. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficiency degree of using various electronic lexicographic systems in the lexical skills formation. In our work, we compared online dictionaries for their optimal use in the perspective of analyzing the results that were presented by the listeners, since the use of traditional media is questioned. The article also provides the criteria with the help of which a detailed analysis of online dictionaries was carried out. The data obtained can suggest the teachers all the possible lexical problems of study that will allow them to work out these points more carefully when teaching students. The English language teaching process becomes more adapted and customized, taking into account specific tasks that are important to solve when mastering any foreign language. Moreover, it is possible to create a dictionary created either by the students themselves or the teacher that introduces variants of lexical units that cause difficulties in learning.
