Purpose The purpose of this systematic review was to identify, appraise, and critically synthesize the latest available evidence on the effects of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)-based interventions on communication skills in children aged between 6 and 10 years with mixed diagnoses. Method MEDLINE (OVID), PsycINFO (EBSCO), ERIC (ProQuest), SCIELO (WOS), Teacher Reference Center (EBSCO), and Education Database (ProQuest) were searched. The studies were independently selected by two reviewers for the purposes of the review. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed, and characteristics and results of the studies were extracted. Results This review included 14 studies from a total of 1,204 found through an electronic search. The AAC interventions studied were effective at improving various outcomes in children with mixed diagnoses. Interventions that focused on narrative skills were the most common type. When considering the quality of the studies, the independence of assessors, data analysis, replication, and generalization of interventions were the weaker areas. Conclusions Interventions analyzed in this review improve communication skills, including phonological awareness, vocabulary, requesting, and developing narrative skills in children aged between 6 and 10 years with mixed diagnoses. The results of one study also indicate that the acquisition of skills using an AAC method is superior when the child prefers the method. Supplemental Material https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.14462256

IntroductionYoung people and adults released from incarceration have a risk of dying from violence that far exceeds that in the general population. Despite this, evidence regarding the incidence, elevated risk and predictive factors for violence-related deaths after release have not yet been synthesised. This information is important to inform the development of evidence-based approaches to effectively prevent deaths from violence in this population. This systematic review will synthesise the literature examining the crude mortality rates (CMRs), standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) and predictive factors for violence-related deaths among people released from incarceration. Methods and analysisWe searched key electronic health, social science and criminology databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, CINCH, Criminal Justice Abstracts) for peer-reviewed cohort studies published in English on 14th September 2020. Our primary outcome of interest is violence-related deaths occurring in the community following release from incarceration. We will not restrict study eligibility by year of publication or age of participants. The Methodological Standard for Epidemiological Research (MASTER) scale will be used to assess the quality of included studies. If there are sufficient studies and homogeneity between studies, we will conduct meta-analyses to calculate pooled estimates of CMRs, SMRs or predictive factors for violence-related deaths. If there is a sufficient number of included studies, meta-regression will be conducted to examine the influence of subgroups and methodological factors on the CMRs, SMRs or predictive factors. If the studies do not report sufficient data, or if there is substantial heterogeneity, findings will be presented in a narrative form.Ethics and disseminationThis review is exempt from ethics approval as it will synthesise findings from published studies that have already obtained ethics approval. Our findings will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed journal article, and national and international conference and seminar presentations.Trial registration detailsThis study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020209422).

Objective: Communicating with patients is not only among the principles of care, but it is considered as one of the key roles of nurses. As nurses are skilled in other clinical skills, their communication skills should also be adequate. The aim of this study is to determine nurses’ communication skills.Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in 2015 in hospitals affiliated to Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. 215 nurses participated in the study using census method. Data was collected using valid and reliable communication skills (α=0.885). The quality of communication skills was classified on three levels: poor, average, and good. Results: Quality of communication skills of 120 (55.8%) of nurses was weak, 95 (44.2%) moderate, and there was no good evaluation (0%). The communication skills of most nurses were weak in the areas of conscious start (75.8%), verbal and nonverbal communication skills (86.5%), inner and outer harmony (92.6%), respect for the patient (94.4%) and the unconditional acceptance of patient (100%). There was a significant relationship between the nurses’ educational level, mean age and work experience with quality of communication skills (p <0.05).Conclusion: The results indicate the low ability of nurses in terms of communication skills with the patient. It seems that teaching communication skills, as well as the revision of management, description of job responsibilities, increasing job autonomy and decision-making power for nurses can be the effective ways to improve nurse-patient communication which leads to enhancing the quality of care from patients.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.17(2) 2018 p.275-281

Abstract BackgroundAttention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosed among children and adolescents. The axial symptom is a deficit in cognitive functioning, including executive functioning. Some studies have shown that the quality of executive functioning in children and adolescents with ADHD is modified by some characteristics of the family environment.MethodsThe authors plan to conduct a systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Searches will be carried out in electronic databases (PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, and PubMed) and in the bibliography of identified publications. Relevant studies will be selected by using keywords and taking into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analysis will be performed using a specially design data spreadsheet. These activities will be carried out under appropriate methodological rigor to minimize the risk of bias.DiscussionConducting a systematic review will provide an opportunity to describe the current research on the topic. This action will allow us to summarize the knowledge from the published results. Possible gaps will be identified, and future directions for research projects in this field will be proposed.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO CRD42021246496

Background: Communication skills are reported to be of high importance for nursing and midwifery practice. Communication skills refers to how actions are used in sending messages. The necessity for nurses and midwives to be good communicators has been demonstrated. Objective: To investigate the quality of evidence of communication skills training for nursing and midwifery students on patients’ outcome in nursing and midwifery colleges. Methods: Firstly, a search in the databases of Ovid Medline (1946 - present), Ebscohost and CINAHL (1960 - present) to find relevant studies were conducted. Secondly, there was hand searching of three journals from Africa. Thirdly, the reference lists of studies found were searched for additional studies. Fourthly, there was consultation with professionals around communication skills training and the leadership of Ghana Nurses and Midwives Association. Results: Quality assessment using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system found that out of the 10 studies that were included, only one was of moderate quality. The other nine studies were of low quality. Conclusions: The literature on enhancing communication skills training in nursing and midwifery students shows that the quality of evidence is generally low. This study has implications on how communication is handled in nursing schools and demonstrated which communication has high evidence. Systematic Review Registration: This systematic review was not registered in a registry.

Purpose We sought to critically analyze and evaluate published evidence regarding feasibility and clinical potential for predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes of the frequency-following responses (FFRs) to speech recordings in neonates (birth to 28 days). Method A systematic search of MeSH terms in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied HealthLiterature, Embase, Google Scholar, Ovid Medline (R) and E-Pub Ahead of Print, In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations and Daily, Web of Science, SCOPUS, COCHRANE Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov was performed. Manual review of all items identified in the search was performed by two independent reviewers. Articles were evaluated based on the level of methodological quality and evidence according to the RTI item bank. Results Seven articles met inclusion criteria. None of the included studies reported neurodevelopmental outcomes past 3 months of age. Quality of the evidence ranged from moderate to high. Protocol variations were frequent. Conclusions Based on this systematic review, the FFR to speech can capture both temporal and spectral acoustic features in neonates. It can accurately be recorded in a fast and easy manner at the infant's bedside. However, at this time, further studies are needed to identify and validate which FFR features could be incorporated as an addition to standard evaluation of infant sound processing evaluation in subcortico-cortical networks. This review identifies the need for further research focused on identifying specific features of the neonatal FFRs, those with predictive value for early childhood outcomes to help guide targeted early speech and hearing interventions.

Abstract. Borderline Intellectual Functioning (BIF) refers to a global IQ ranging from 71 to 84, and it represents a condition of clinical attention for its association with other disorders and its influence on the outcomes of treatments and, in general, quality of life and adaptation. Furthermore, its definition has changed over time causing a relevant clinical impact. For this reason, a systematic review of the literature on this topic can promote an understanding of what has been studied, and can differentiate what is currently attributable to BIF from that which cannot be associated with this kind of intellectual functioning. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria, we have conducted a review of the literature about BIF. The results suggest that this condition is still associated with mental retardation, and only a few studies have focused specifically on this condition.
