Lyrics in song are intended to send a message to the audience or music lovers.  Composers use figurative language as the media to convey their message. One of the figurative languages that is mostly used in song’s lyrics is Metaphor. This study was intended to investigate the types of metaphor used in One Direction Album. The objective of this study to identify the types of metaphor found in the song lyrics and to analyze metaphor meaning in One Direction song. This study adopted a descriptive qualitative research design. Three songs by One Direction had been chosen as the data of this study; Story of My Life, Steal My Girl and Drag Me Down. The data were analyzed its metaphor by using Lakoff and Johnson theory, while in investigating the meaning, Chaer’s theory of contextual meaning was used. The result of the study showed that based on the three types of metaphor, structural metaphor becomes the most frequently used in the song lyrics, meanwhile 2 of 3 songs used all of the three types of metaphor; Orientation, Structural and Ontological Metaphor. In answering the second research question about the meaning of each metaphor, each lyric has been analyzed through content analysis to know the true meaning of what the song writer want to express in his/her lyrics and each lyric has different contextual meaning which is elaborated further in this study. Keywords: Metaphor, Meaning, One Direction’s Album

The study analysed euphemism in language.  This research focused on the use of euphemisms in the Abagusii traditional dirges.  The research sought to collect Abagusii dirges, identify, describe, and classify the euphemisms used in them. This paper focuses on documenting and explaining the traditional Abagusii dirges. The study was based on the Face-work and Politeness theories. The study adopted a qualitative research design.   The interview method was used as the instrument for data collection from a sample of five (5) adults of Kisii County of Gucha Sub County. The collected songs were subjected to thematic content analysis.  From the collected dirges, it appears that the thematic concerns other than mourning also focus on tolerance, love, morality, justice, injustice, adherence to the traditional network of social relations and hard work.  The dirge, just like other types of songs and is a vessel for airing the inner feelings of the community's aspirations and expectations, which it recorded and then passed from one generation to another as cultural heritage.

This study aimed to investigate the types of deixis used in the song lyrics of One Direction, to find out the dominant types used and to describe the semantic meaning of the deixis. The song lyrics are associated with deixis since they express the singer’s or song writer’s feelings or emotions represented by some expressions of human thoughts, ideas and opinions. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were obtained from five songs of One Direction entitled Up All Night, Change My Mind, Everything about You, Little Things, and Right Now. Three types of deixis were found in the five songs and there were 108 deixis found in the lyrics. Person deixis was investigated as the most dominant type used in the lyrics. Semantics is a branch of linguistics. This branch is important as semantics is related to meanings and without meanings, communication could not function. There are lexical and contextual meanings. By listening to songs, we can gain knowledge of how to appreciate literature and songs. Therefore, the researcher was interested in analyzing the meanings of the Indonesian song Terserah by Willy Winarko, which is a viral song focused on COVID-19. This study aimed to analyze the lexical and contextual meanings in the lyrics of this song. A descriptive qualitative research design was used. The results of this research were as follows: (1) the lexical meanings in the song are different from those in the context; and (2) the contextual meanings are oriented to the situation of COVID-19. A look at rhetoric from a stylistic standpoint allows building understanding of current rhetorical practices as evolved forms of rhetoric. By following a qualitative research design described as content analysis by Leedy and Ormrod (2001), the present study describes the style structure differences and similarities in contemporary personal letter writing in English and Spanish as compared to the style structure of letter writing in the middle ages. It was concluded that personal letter writing in both English and Spanish does not fully comply with the style structure cannon of letter writing established for each class. Also, English and Spanish contemporary personal letter writing are rather similar, and the style structure cannons for contemporary personal letter writing in both English and Spanish can be traced back to that of the Middle Ages.

The dominant topic in investigating pragmatics which used to understand the meaning of certain words and phrases requires contextual information is the phenomenon of deixis. The researcher limited this study on person deixis which aimed to identify and classify kind of person deixis in English translation of Summarized Shahih Al-Bukhari Hadith , especially in the book of As-Salat (the prayer) that translated by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan. This study used Stephen Levinson’s framework of deixis for the analysis of distinct types of person deixis elements. The researcher adopted qualitative research design as the method for this analysis. In this study, the researcher found that the dominant deixis used in Hadith  was the third person singular deixis especially the word “He” that dominantly refers to “Prophet Muhammad SAW in which shows that Hadith  is the media to reveal the action, provisions, approvals and utterances of Prophet Muhammad SAW and his companions.

This study was conducted to discover the discriminations against women in the Bekisar Merah novel and how they formulate resistance to those discriminations. To address the above objective, this study used descriptive qualitative research design with a feminism approach. Source of the data in this study was the second edition of Bekisar Merah novel written by Ahmad Tohari. The data included were words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs on Bekisar Merah which portray womens discrimination toward Lasi, the women figure in the novel, and power types formulated by her who resisted the discrimination. To analyze the data, content analysis was applied. Triangulation was used to ensure the trustworthiness of the data. The result of the study showed eight forms of discriminations and three resistances. The discriminations were domestic abuse, molestation, gender harassment, seduction behavior, imposition, coercion, bribery, and subordination. The resistances were physically, mentally, and verbally.

Motherhood, which seems to be a women’s issue in principle, has always been a phenomenon that needs to be regulated through various practices by the rulers, in order for the patriarchy to sustain itself. This affects especially the lives of women who are not married but want to have a kid in many ways. In this research, the women in Turkey who want to but cannot have a kid because they are not married were asked semi-structured questions. The research evaluates why these women want to have a kid, what the psychological and social effects of being unable to have a kid are, how they cope with this situation, and whether they prefer to be a mother in a society where gender equality is ensured and single motherhood by choice is possible. In the research, case study, which is a type of qualitative research design, and homogenous sampling, which is a purposive sampling method, was used. Twenty women who were single and over 30 years old were interviewed face-to-face. The women were asked 16 questions. Then content analysis of the responses was done. The findings reveal that the women who cannot have a child have serious psychological and social problems.

The aim of this research was to describe, explain and categorise the key competencies of collaborative pianists in music schools and music/arts academies in the Republic of Croatia. A qualitative research design was applied, based on qualitative content analysis of nine interviews with collaborative pianists and an online questionnaire filled out by nine fifth-year students from the Music Academy in Zagreb. Findings have been grouped into five competence categories according to the European Polifonia framework: performance and artistic, planning and organisational, communication and pedagogical, facilitation and reflective practitioner.

This research was aimed to know the students’ perception about Google Translation tool in learning English. The background of the research based on the raised of the use Google Translation tool among students. Therefore, the researcher conducts a research regarding students’ perception on the use of Google Translation tool in learning English. To answer the problem above, there are two research questions formulated. (1) how many percent students of English Department use Google Translation tool in learning English and (2) Students’ perception on the use of Google Translation tool in learning English. Meanwhile, to solve the research question that was already formulated, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative research design. There were two sets of questionnaire as instrument used in this research which were the first questionnaire to answer the first research question and the second questionnaire to answer the second research question. The respondents of this research were active students of English Department at Jabal Ghafur University in batch 2016-2019. All of them were chosen by using purposive sampling. The findings of this research showed that the students of English Department at Jabal Ghafur University used Google translation tool in learning English because sometimes they had difficulties in understanding English especially in translation activity. They utilize it to help them such as to translate, as dictionary, to check synonym and antonym, and to check pronunciation. Furthermore, they had a positive perception about Google Translation tool in learning English with majority of answers chosen by them were “agree” that it was helpful in learning English. In addition, there were also suggestions to students who use Google translation tool in learning English and the future researchers.

Figurative languages are languages that use figures of speech, not literal meanings. This research analyzed the figurative language used in the lyric of Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of figurative language in the lyrics of the song Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys and to analyze the contextual meaning of figurative language used in that song lyrics. It is hoped that the results of this study will be useful for readers, especially in describing what figurative language and what kind of figurative language are. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The lyrics of song is got from (Keys, 2012) entitle Girl on Fire. The result found that there are some kinds of figurative language used in Alicia Keys’ song entitle Girl on Fire, such as alliteration, cliché, hyperbole, idiom, imagery, metaphor, personification, repetition, similie, and symbol. The contextual meaning of each figurative language is also clarified. The conclusion of this research is there are some kinds of figurative language use by Alicia Keys in her song titled Girl on Fire.
