Developing Sustainable Processes Through Knowledge Management

Sustainable development of a process depends on a harmonious association of three sustainable pillars: Economy, Society, and Environment. Yet, in case of DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) process, the combination is challenged by inefficient management of knowledge resource in the process. The potential economy resource is not preserved and renewed, and therefore influents on sustainability of the process. In this article, the authors present and discuss sustainable aspects of a knowledge management model for DMAIC in which knowledge resource is accumulated and reused efficiently. In particular, the key concepts of sustainable development are reviewed, a process of knowledge management based on Ontology Engineering is presented, and sustainable criterial and measures for the proposed model are applied. The authors find that preserving and renewing knowledge is an indispensable process of sustainable development of DMAIC process.

AbstractPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to promote the integration of sustainable development concepts and conceptual models in engineering research, and therefore, to enhance sustainability of research models. Particularly, the concepts are integrated with an integrated theoretical model of knowledge management and DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analysis-Improve-Control) process.Methodology: Based on literature, the key concepts of sustainable development, knowledge management, Ontology and DMAIC methodology have been reviewed. A theoretical combination of knowledge management, ontology engineering, and DMAIC methodology is to aim at accumulating and reusing a potential economic resource, knowledge resource. An analysis of sustainable aspects of a proposed model is presented.Important findings: As literature expressed that knowledge created by every step of a DMAIC process can be accumulated and reused by using Ontology in a conceptual model. Furthermore, sustainable aspects of the model such as economy, environment and society are identified.Conclusion: DMAIC knowledge is a potential economic resource that should be shared and reused using Ontology engineering in order to archive sustainable development of DMAIC process. Theoretical integration of seven sustainable measures with activities of knowledge management is possible and realizable.

Purpose Despite the interrelationship between knowledge management and organizational memory, there is a gap in the literature of knowledge management implementation models that consider the characteristics of organizational memory. In view of this situation, a knowledge management implementation model focused on the characteristics of organizational memory has been developed, and the purpose of this paper is to analyze the applicability of this model in Spanish organizations. Design/methodology/approach In addition to a literature review on the main concepts involved, interviews were conducted with managers of Spanish organizations. The research is of a qualitative nature, characterized as descriptive and exploratory, whose universe of research is the companies of the meat sector in Salamanca, Spain. The qualitative technique of content analysis was used as the research methodology. Findings After the interviews, it is concluded that the proposed model is a valid and necessary instrument for the implementation of knowledge management focused on organizational memory. Originality/value The originality of this study is due to the demonstration of the applicability of a knowledge management model that considers, in a direct way, the characteristics of the organizational memory, indispensable for the adequate application of knowledge management in organizations.

This conceptual, interdisciplinary paper will start by introducing the commencement of a new era in which human society faces continuously accelerating technological revolutions, named the Post Accelerating Data and Knowledge Online Society, or ‘Padkos’ (“food for the journey; prog; provisions for journey”—in Afrikaans) for short. In this context, a conceptual model of sustainable development with a focus on knowledge management and sharing will be proposed. The construct of knowledge management will be unpacked into a new three-layer model with a focus on the knowledge-human and data-machine spheres. Then, each sphere will be discussed with concentration on the learning and decision- making processes, the digital supporting systems and the human actors’ aspects. Moreover, the recombination of new knowledge development and contemporary knowledge management into one amalgamated construct will be proposed. The holistic conceptual model of knowledge management for sustainable development is comprised by time, cybersecurity and two alternative humanistic paradigms (Homo Technologicus and Homo Sustainabiliticus). Two additional particular models are discussed in depth. First, a recently proposed model of quantum organizational decision-making is elaborated. Next, a boundary management and learning process is deliberated. The paper ends with a number of propositions and several implications for the future based on the deliberations in the paper and the models discussed and with conclusions.

Knowledge is a strategic resource for successful data driven decision making in any organization. To harness this knowledge, successful adoption of a technological intervention is key. Institutions leverage on technology to drive knowledge management (KM) initiatives for quality service delivery and prudent data management. These initiatives provide the overall strategy for managing data resources. They make available knowledge organization tools and techniques while enabling regular updates. Derived benefits of positive deployment of a technological intervention are competency enhancement through gained knowledge, raised quality of service and promotion of healthy development of e-commerce. Successful and timely adoption of technological interventions through which knowledge management initiatives are deployed remains a key challenge to many organizations. This paper proposes a wholesome multilevel technology acceptance management model. The proposed model takes into account human, technological and organizational variables, which exist in a deployment environment. This model will be vital in driving early technology acceptance prediction and timely deployment of mitigation measures to deploy technological interventions successfully.

Global warming, climate change is now affecting the world. The effort of the leaders to achieving the sustainable development is from New Urban Agenda (NUA), Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and local level is local authorities.  SDG’s goal number 13 takes urgent action to combat climate change and its impact also SDG’s number 11 to sustainable cities and communities. The gap of this paper  Different cities face different challenges and issues. Local authorities will play a significant role in undertaking policy initiatives to combat carbon emissions of the city. Low Carbon Cities (LCC) is to reduce carbon emissions in all human activities in cities.  The objective of this paper is by applying the LCCF Checklist in planning permission for sustainable development. The methodology of this research is a mixed-method, namely quantitative and qualitative approach. The survey methods are by interview, questionnaire, and observation. Town planners are the subject matter expert in managing the planning permission submission for the development control of their areas. Descriptive statistical analysis will be used to show the willingness of the stakeholders, namely the developers and planning consultants in implementing of the LCCF. The contribution of this research will gauge readiness at the local authorities level. The findings of the LCCF checklist are identified as important in planning permission into the development control process. Surprisingly, that challenges and issues exist in multifaceted policy implementation the LCCF Checklist in a local authority. Finally based on Subang Jaya Municipal Councils, the existing approach in the application of the LCCF Checklist in the development control process will be useful for development control in a local authority towards sustainable development.
