Human Capacity Building Through University-Industry Collaboration

The reality in the digital age is that knowledge is perishable, which suggests the need for continuous updates of skills, knowledge, and competency framework for sustainable development. Human capacity building through university-industry collaborative efforts is fundamental for sustainable development. This chapter examines capacity building through university-industry collaboration strategies for sustainable development in the digital age. A desktop research approach was adopted to investigate the influence of human capacity building through university-industry collaboration on sustainable economic growth and development in recent times. This chapter holds that a synergy between conventional and corporate universities is fundamental for skills updates, as well as advancing research and development in the digital age. Therefore, human capacity building through university and industry collaboration is essential in developing green talent and providing green opportunities for sustainable development.

“Innovation driven” is the proper term for promoting regional sustainable development under the general goal of national high-quality development. University–industry collaboration (UIC) has become an important innovation resource for regional sustainable development. The study aims to analyze the influencing factors and mediating mechanisms of university–industry collaboration scientific and technological (S&T) and business activities oriented for regional sustainable development in 30 provinces in China (excluding Tibet). Specifically, we used the partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modeling method to test the effects of innovation climate and resource endowments on regional sustainable development through two mode pathways of university–industry collaboration activities. The results show that the innovation climate and resource endowments significantly affect UIC in scientific and technological innovation activities, and then affect the regional economic development and human capital. UIC S&T innovation activities play positive mediating roles in promoting regional sustainable development. In addition, the innovation climate does not significantly impact the business activities of UIC. Therefore, region can get a greater sustainable development through UIC S&T innovation activities than business activities. Much more UIC S&T activities can improve the economic development, human capital, and environmental conditions in the region.

<p>Higher education plays an important role in the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Together with industry, the collaboration can provide a wider multiplier effect. Among others, agro-industry is one of sector that provides vast employment opportunities both on- and off-farms, which potentially improve welfare of human involved. However, its activities in effort to meet the needs of rapid increase of world’s population faced with scarcity problems, sometimes merely focus on economic sustainability. Therefore, disseminating good cleaner production practices, which emphasizes the reduction or removal of environmental contamination at the source (front of pipe concept) can be done to educate agro-industrial actors to implement sustainable development. Collaboration model between university and agro-industry in Education for Sustainable Development of Agroindustry is discussed in the paper.</p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: cleaner production, sustainable agro-industry, university – industry collaboration </p>

The relationship between academia and industry is old. However, a twist is necessary to move from the traditional exchange of funding for research to the creation of long-term strategic partnerships of mutual benefit. The purpose of this study is to explore the effort made in Lebanon to forge the industry-academia link and to highlight the challenges faced. The researcher relied on both secondary and primary data. A review of the literature is made to set the theoretical framework regarding the need for creating strategic partnerships between academia and industry and its impact on sustainable economic growth. The researcher distinguished strategic partnership from the conventional exchange of research for funding approach. Moreover, she described the lessons learned from international experiences. Primary data are collected about Lebanon through interviewing key actors both in the industry and in academia. The study revealed that Lebanon realized several years ago the need to link academia to industry, several actors took measures to facilitate the collaboration. However, some measures did not reach their full potential yet due to some challenges. The author suggests few recommendations to overcome these challenges and strengthen the academia-industry collaboration.

Over the years, one of the ways that have been identified as pivotal in building sustainable organisations is the manpower development component of any organisation. Such manpower development through capacity building can be gained by training and retraining to retool the workforce into having the relevant and up to date skill set that spurs competitiveness and growth. For the Nigerian space industry, this human capacity development component has been embraced, encouraged and adopted into a working model for sustainability. The Nigerian Space Industry has leveraged on its potential to harness its intellectual capital through a collaborative culture with national and international partners to provide sustainable growth in attaining technological competence in Space Science and Technology (SST). In this chapter, we present a capacity building context as a model by which Nigeria’s Space Industry mobilises its intellectual resources and collaborative efforts towards achieving sustainable development.

PurposeThis paper investigates the lean enabling human capacities and develops a framework integrating individual, organisational and environmental level strategies to build human capacities for successful lean implementation of small and medium contractors (SMCs) in Sri Lanka.Design/methodology/approachAn interpretivism stance is adopted, and a qualitative research approach is used. The data collection technique adopted is semi-structured interviews. In total, 24 experts with experience in lean implementation of SMCs were interviewed, and data were analysed through code based content analysis using NVivo10.FindingsTeam working skills, critical thinking, leadership, communication skills, work ethics, knowledge and positive attitudes were identified as lean enabling human capacities for SMCs. The framework developed in this study provides individual, organisational and environmental level strategies that can be used to build human capacities necessary for enabling lean in construction SMCs.Practical implicationsThe study will be beneficial to construction SMCs, academics, researchers and government institutions in developing countries, which share socio-economic, demographic or cultural traits similar to Sri Lanka.Originality/valueA novel lean enabling human capacity building framework is developed with the strategies required for building those capacities in order to accelerate the lean implementation in construction SMCs. This contributes to the body of knowledge as it uncovers individual, organisational and environmental level strategies for enabling lean through human capacity building in Sri Lankan SMCs.
