Based on the cases of public places in foreign and domestic cities, the paper probes into the essential content of some public place from its external form to propose the evaluating standards for suitability. By this, the paper concludes that complexity, diversity and inclusiveness are three key factors and easy accessibility, comfortable physical environment, completed facilities, sufficient greens and well organized space are all beneficial aspects in the transformation from merely aesthetics concern to practical arrangements in urban design. Finally, the paper points out that the existing ecological tendency will create a long-lasting city image which will give new explanation about suitability of the public place.

By exploring interactions between architecture, urban design and sociology, this thesis seeks to highlight the disconnection between these disciplines and how they can be integrated into a robust framework. The central question driving this investigation is how integrating third place theory with urban design principles can support and nurture communities within the public realm. In order to achieve this, the thesis outlines third place theory in conjunction with the core urban design principles and highlights the benefits and value by bringing these together. The outcome is an integrated novel framework that effectively brings these bodies of knowledge together.

Roman law accorded a broad scope of protection for public places. Te magistrates responsible for securing it were the curule and plebeian aediles, the censors, and the praetors. Praetors conducted this duty by promulgating interdicts. Ne quid in loco publico fat, which prohibited any activity or installation in a public place which could cause damage, stands out among the other praetorian interdicts. What made it special was that it could be applied both when the potential damage concerned the public interest (utilitas publica), and/or the interest of a private individual (utilitas privata). The damage (damnum) was defned as the loss of a beneft of whatsoever kind the private individual drew from his enjoyment of the public place in question.

This article presents the findings from a secondary analysis of the 1991 Queensland Crime Victim Survey. Although now more than 10 years old, this survey still has validity as it remains the largest of its kind conducted in Queensland, and it is a rich source of information about the experiences of victims of violence. The study investigated how the experiences of younger female assault victims differ from older female victims in terms of their relationship with their aggressor and the assault location. The following factors were examined: whether or not the assault occurred (a) at the hands of a partner or former partner, (b) in a private dwelling, (c) in a public place, and (d) in a leisure venue away from home. Results pointed to important differences between younger and older women in terms of their experiences of violence.Teenage women reported significantly more assaults in public places compared with older women, and were less likely to be assaulted in their own dwelling. Also, trends in the data suggested that compared to older women, teenage women were more likely to be assaulted in leisure venues away from home, and were less likely to be assaulted by partners or former partners. Considering that young women are at a much higher risk than older women of being assaulted, consideration of these age differences may be helpful in the design of violence prevention strategies. In particular, more attention should be paid to the public place prevention of violence against young women.

Contemporary Islamic movements have undergone many changes of outlook, social and political orientations. The movement is not directed to establish an Islamic state or to support the use of military forces to achieve individual and
communal programs in preparing "good Muslims". But the project is directed to self-transformation through moral cultivation and ethics as the foundation to be performed in public spaces. The movement is more directed to the process of reislamization related to social and discipline practices to prepare a good Muslim. This article explores the Islamization of public space in the Banten province. That is related to the construction of Islamic identity of the body and the public place. Construction of Islamic identity of the body is stressed by obliging veils (ḥijāb) for Muslim women. While Islamization of public places is through mounting names of Allah (Asmaul Husna) and other Islamic messages in several major highways.

This work focuses on the pedagogical method that documents the public realm by promoting to students learning through photography in urban design programmes to investigate everyday events that form public life. Picturing the commute in our cities could be guided by digital photography, archival research and critical thinking analysis. To contrive a kind of change, a module structure may come for the task of urban design as a field of professional practice to have a varied, integrated and transitioning role with different disciplines such as photography for raising the visual skills and boosting the way that students see their external environment. Moreover, the methods and techniques of urban design need to be extended to the unlimited borders of teaching various skills. The results of the current research stem from the reports of excellent students’ feedback, as well as the comments on the course and expert interviews. The conclusion is that urban design, as visual-aesthetic management, can benefit from a method for module revisited that provides themes for photography to boost the skills that students should gain. The concluded six key factors could foster the integrity of the modules of urban design and site photography.

In the era of globalization, increasing the nation’s industrial competitiveness, production value, and competitiveness is a challenge for every country. Therefore, Taiwan must strive for innovation, increase the added value of its products, and enhance industrial competitiveness. This promotes Taiwan’s survival under competition engendered by globalization. The study identified public places that influence consumer opinions of shopping malls to examine the intentionality of the relationship between people and shopping malls. Taiwan has many historical cultural parks that have been reduced to idle spaces. This research will enable historical creative parks. Through DAHP’s research methods, this research will determine the key factors in the public space of cultural shopping centers. Moreover, the study examined key factors that create a sense of culture in public space design. The relationship between the general public and shopping malls has various internationalities.

This study on the evolution of waterfront development in Lumut through physical improvement serves as one component in the formation of a city from the economic, social and environmental aspects. The current study aims to review the elements of urban design that offer an alternative to the revitalisation of the waterfront city in Lumut, Malaysia, particularly to upgrade the physical environment quality and economic vibrancy of cities. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) examine the consideration and perceptions of urban design aspects given by the respondents related to the evolution of a Lumut waterfront city, and (2) identify urban design elements that have evidence of significant contributions to the revitalisation of the aforementioned city. This research comprises two components. The first component explains the analysis based on observation and the obtained secondary information. The second component is the inventory study and analysis related to the city design in the study area. The theoretical study involves city image enhancement concepts, basic methods and principles in improving the structure of city elements. It also elaborates that any improvement or modification that should be done in any of the city elements must proceed through a proper channel and adhere to improvement or modification steps that have been proposed by design experts. The reason is to create harmony between the city elements with their surroundings to form an image that has identity, structure and meaning. With effective consideration, the proposed development must be closely assessed for its use and function before any project is endorsed and enforced. Issues discovered by this study will facilitate the formulation of strategies and suitable proposals, and automatically ensures improvement of the economic, social and environmental conditions.

This chapter presents a number of suggestions for design of information technology (IT) to be used in public places. The design implications given are based on an exploratory field study conducted in public places where people wait to travel. The study shows that the use of technology must be negotiable and adaptable to support use in different ways, in different contexts and to produce a possibility for others to understand this use. The findings are arranged in three areas: creating privacy (how people act to establish privacy in the public place), adapting to change (how people adapt to social, spatial and temporal changes in the environment), and appearance and activity (how people make efforts to communicate activities to others present in the public place). Each of these areas has aspects that affect the use of IT. Thus they should also influence the design of IT. Based on these findings, we derive implications for design of IT to be used in public places.

Most countries in the world have recommended or mandated face masks in some or all public places during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, mask-wearing has been thought to increase people’s face-touching frequency and, thus, the risk of self-inoculation. Across two studies, we video observed the face-touching behavior of members of the public in Amsterdam and Rotterdam (the Netherlands) during the first wave of the pandemic. Study 1 (n = 383) yielded evidence in favor of the absence of an association between mask-wearing and face-touching (defined as touches of face or mask), and Study 2 (n = 421) replicated this result. Secondary outcome analysis of the two studies—separately and with pooled datasets—found a robust negative association between mask-wearing and hand contacts with the face and t-zone (i.e., eyes, nose, and mouth). Our results alleviate the concern that mask-wearing has an adverse face-touching effect.
