Effect of Loads on the Wear Properties of La2O3-MoSi2 Composite against SiC at Elevated Temperature

Wear behaviours of La2O3-MoSi2composite against SiC under different loads at 1000°C and 0.126m/s sliding speed in air were investigated by using an XP-5 type high temperature friction and wear tester. The worn surfaces and phase of the sample were observed by scanning election microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Results showed that friction coefficient and wear rate of La2O3-MoSi2composite and SiC decreased with the increase of loads. The wear mechanisms of La2O3-MoSi2composite are oxidation, adhesion abrasion and fatigue pitting.

Wear behaviors of MoSi2against Al2O3or SiC under 30N at 1000°C in air have been investigated by using an XP-5 type High Temperature Friction and Wear Tester. The worn surfaces and phases of samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer, respectively. Result shows the wear rate and friction coefficient of MoSi2decreases with the increase of sliding speed. SiC is superior to Al2O3as the counter-face materials of MoSi2. Serious adhesion leads to very high wear rate of Al2O3in this experiment. SiC shows a surprising mass weighing phenomenon, which is caused by oxidation. The main wear mechanism of MoSi2against Al2O3is oxidation and adhesion. However when against SiC, it is chiefly controlled by grinding.

Incorporation of metallic elements, titanium and copper, into carbonaceous mesophase (CM) was performed through mechanical alloying in a ball mill apparatus. The structures of the raw CM as well as the Ti/Cu-added CM were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the Ti/Cu-added CM used as lubricating additives was investigated by using a high temperature friction and wear tester. The results show that, compared with the raw CM, the Ti/Cu-added CM exhibits a drop in the crystallinity and a transition to the amorphous. The Ti/Cu-added CM used as lubricating additive displays an obvious high temperature anti-friction and wear resistance effect, and the lager the applied load, the lower the friction coefficient and the wear severity.

The microstructural and wear properties of laser-cladding WC/Ni-based layer on Al–Si alloy were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and wear-testing. The results show that, compared with the original specimen, the microhardness and wear resistance of the cladding layer on an Al–Si alloy were remarkably improved, wherein the microhardness of the layer achieved 1100 HV and the average friction coefficient of the layer was barely 0.14. The mainly contributor to such significant improvement was the generation of a WC/Ni-composite layer of Al–Si alloy during laser cladding. Two types of carbides, identified as M7C3 and M23C6, were found in the layer. The wear rate of the layer first increased and then decreased with the increase in load; when the load was 20 N, 60 N and 80 N, the wear rate of layer was1.89 × 10−3 mm3·m−1, 3.73 × 10−3 mm3·m−1 and 2.63 × 10−3 mm3·m−1, respectively, and the average friction coefficient (0.14) was the smallest when the load was 60 N.

In the present work, the friction and wear properties of Polypropylene (PP) based composites filled with Hydroxyapatite (HA) particles were studied. Fillers contents in the PP were 10, 20, and 30 wt%. The effects of hydroxyapatite ratio on the water absorption, friction and wear properties of the polymer composites is presented. The result showed that the addition of HA to the composite changed the water absorption, friction coefficient and wear rate.

AbstractTo reduce the friction coefficient of cobalt-cemented tungsten carbide (WC-12Co) wear-resistant coatings, graphene was compounded into WC-12Co powder via wet ball milling and spray granulation. Self-lubricating and wear-resistant graphene coatings were prepared via detonation gun spraying. The presence, morphologies, and phase compositions of graphene in the powders and coatings that are obtained through different powder preparation processes were analyzed. The analysis was performed using the following technologies: energy-dispersive X-ray-spectroscopy (EDXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of the coatings were studied using a microhardness tester and a universal drawing machine. The friction and wear properties of the coatings were studied using an SRV-4 friction and wear tester. The results showed that the graphene content in the WC-12Co coating modified with graphene was higher than that without modification; graphene was embedded in the structure in a transparent and thin-layer state. The adhesive strength of this coating at approximately 25 °C was approximately 60.33 MPa, and the hardness was approximately 984 HV0.3. After high-temperature treatment, the adhesive strength and hardness of the graphene oxide (GO)/WC-12Co coating decreased slightly (the lowest adhesive strength of 53.16 MPa was observed after treatment at 400 °C, and the lowest hardness of approximately 837 HV0.3 was observed after treatment at 300 °C). Compared to the friction coefficient (0.6) of the WC-12Co coating obtained at room temperature, the friction coefficient of the GO/WC-12Co coating was decreased by approximately 50% of that value. The graphene-modified coating was continuously exposed to the wear tracks on the surface of the contacting materials during friction, and a lubricating film was formed in the microareas in which the wear tracks were present. The coating exhibited improved self-lubricating and wear-resistant effects compared to the unmodified WC-12Co coating. The results of this study demonstrated that graphene could be effective in self-lubrication and wear-reduction in a temperature range of 100–200 °C, as a friction coefficient of 0.3 was maintained.

This paper presents a facile and effective method for preparing Ni/NbSe2 composites in order to improve the wettability of NbSe2 and copper matrix, which is helpful in enhancing the friction-reducing and anti-wear properties of copper-based composites. The powder metallurgy (P/M) technique was used to fabricate copper-based composites with different weight fractions of Ni/NbSe2, and tribological properties of composites were evaluated by using a ball-on-disk friction-and-wear tester. Results indicated that tribological properties of copper-based composites were improved by the addition of Ni/NbSe2. In particular, copper-based composites containing 15 wt.% Ni/NbSe2 showed the lowest friction coefficient (0.16) and wear rate (4.1 × 10−5 mm3·N−1·m−1) among all composites.

Polypropylene/organo-montmorillonite (PP/OMMT) composites were investigated by XRD. Friction and wear behaviors of this composites sliding against GCr15 stainless steel were examined on M-2000 text rig in a ring-on-block configuration. Worn surfaces of PP and its composites were analyzed by SEM. The result shows that PP macromolecule chains have intercalated into OMMT layers and form intercalated nanocomposites. With the increase of mass fraction of OMMT, both wear rate and friction coefficient of composites first decrease then rise. With the increase of load, from 150 N, 200 N to 250 N, wear rate of composites increases, while friction coefficient reduces. The wear mechanisms of composites are connected with the content of OMMT. Composites were dominated by adhesive wear, abrasive wear and adhesive wear accompanied by abrasive wear respectively with the increase of OMMT content.

The friction and wear properties of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coatings before and after gamma irradiation were studied under vacuum conditions. Experimental results indicated that the friction and wear properties of PTFE coatings were improved by gamma irradiation. Results showed that the wear process of PTFE coatings before and after gamma irradiation consists of three stages. The steps for the irradiated PTFE are slightly longer than that for the non-irradiated samples. The friction coefficient of irradiated PTFE coatings reduces slightly compared to that of the non-irradiated samples. The friction coefficients of the PTFE coatings before and after gamma irradiation first increase with the increase of sliding velocity and then decrease with the increase of sliding velocity, and The friction coefficient of PTFE coatings before and after gamma irradiation decreases with the increase of load. The wear of irradiated PTFE coatings is slightly lower than that of non-irradiated PTFE coatings. The wear of PTFE coatings before and after gamma irradiation first decreases with the increase of sliding speed and then increases as the sliding speed increases. The wear of PTFE coatings first decreases with the increase of load and then increases with the increase of load. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was utilized to investigate the worn surfaces.

The effect of different load, revolving speed ,content of Ti(C,N) and sintering process on the friction coefficient and wear rate of Ti(C,N)/Fe composites was investigated systemically. Besides, the wear morphology of Ti(C,N)/Fe composites were researched with an environment scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and the phase composition were studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD).The research shows that the wear mechanism of Ti(C,N)/Fe composites are abrasive wear and adhesive wear.

The glass fiber (GF) reinforced epoxy (EP) composites filled by nano-Al2O3, nano-TiO2, nano-SiO2 and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared. The friction and wear behavior of composites under dry condition were evaluated with block-on-ring friction and wear tester. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the composites were analyzed by scanning electric microscopy (SEM). The results show that 0.5 wt% MWCNTs and nano-TiO2 can significantly lower the friction coefficient and specific wear rate of composites, respectively, while 0.5 wt% nano-SiO2 and nano-Al2O3 can slightly lower the friction coefficient and specific wear rate of the composites.
