Improving the machining efficiency of CNC machine tools by introducing intelligence is now gaining more attention from both researchers and entrepreneurs. Based on the assessment of existing strategy of intelligent machine tool design, an implementation and preliminary evaluation of an intelligent CNC lathe has been reported in this paper. Techniques discussed in this paper are expected to benefit CNC machine tool researchers and designers in terms of the development of intelligent CNC machine tools.

In this paper those factors that influence the adoption of computer-numerically-controlled (CNC) machine tools by small mechanical engineering firms in three regions: the South East of England, Scotland, and Wales are investigated. Evidence is presented on CNC machine adoption in the three regions. A logistic regression model of the probability of CNC lathe adoption is developed and a regression model of the data of first adoption is calibrated. Welsh firms recorded lower adoption probabilities than firms based in either South East England or Scotland; and Scottish companies adopted some two years earlier than companies in the other two regions.

Today, CNC machine tools are moving in the high-speed, high precision, heavy and complex processing of direction, leading to early failure in service due to machine performance, if not timely diagnosis and early warning, will result in waste increases, fluctuations in the quality, productivity decline.Therefore, to ensure reliable operation of CNC machine tools is very important.To build fault diagnosis of CNC machine tools and get test method as the goal, the tool wear experiments are carried out. Signals for cutting tool with different wear in milling process are detected,acquisited and analyzed through vibration sensors and acoustic emission sensors on the milling tools. To LabVIEW8.6 as development platform, a fault diagnosis experimental system of CNC machine tools is developed, including data acquisition module, signal analysis module, fault diagnosis module.

For the use of CNC machine tools is more and more extensive, its fault diagnosis research is becoming more and more important. Failure forms are diversified, and fault reasons are very complicated. Once bearing that is an important transmission part is in fault, the machining efficiency will decrease and affect process accuracy, even make the machine work abnormally. This paper presents a deep analysis of bearing failure mechanism using the wavelet analysis method identify its failure, specially the motor and transmission machine bearing, which provides reliable basis for fault diagnosis and forecast.

With the development of network technology and fault diagnosis technology, monitoring and diagnosis methods for the CNC machine tools had a great change. In this paper, an online monitoring and remote diagnosis system for CNC machine tools was built. The system was consisted of the multi-channel online acquisition system and remote fault diagnosis system. The online acquisition system achieved a real-time monitoring for CNC machine tools. The remote fault diagnosis system provided the management of devices and assistant for experts to analyze data which was uploaded from acquisition system. The system offered real-time state information of CNC machine tools and reduced downtime of machine effectively.
