scholarly journals An explanation from customers’ perspectives for difficulties in developing nursing-home service in Vietnam – A study in Ho Chi Minh City

Even though the demand for a nursing home is increasing, it is not easily-accepted in Vietnam because of cultural traditions which nomally link to morality, affection, relational cohesion, responsibility, relatives’ and friends’ opinions, etc. According to a study conducted by the Health Strategy and Policy Institute in 2012, Vietnamese people think that no one takes care of their parents better than children. That might be the reason why nursing home services have not developed well in Vietnam. This study aims to (1) explore attributes of nursing home preventing Vietnamese customers from using this service, and (2) explore the connections between these attributes and values of individuals through consequences from these attributes. The mean-end-chain theory with a soft-laddering interview is the method employed to conduct the study. Participants are persons who are responsible for making decisions related to nursing home matters, including elder people and ones having elder people in their families and being responsible to send their parents/grandparents to the nursing homes. The research findings show that there are 15 attributes of nursing home service, which drive to 4 values through 9 consequences, preventing Vietnamese customers from using this service. The result from the HVM states that there are three significant A-C-V linkages to explain what attributes and how they influence customers (perceived) values. The study also proposes some suggestions to promote nursing home service and encourage Vietnamese customers to accept this kind of service.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reveal the unique thermal property of Mongolian clothing from the current western clothing and explain their environmental adaptation to the climate of Mongolian plateau in China. Design/methodology/approach Thermal insulation and the temperature rating (TR) of eight Mongolian robe ensembles and two western clothing ensembles were investigated by manikin testing and wearing trials, respectively. The clothing area factor (fcl) of these Mongolian clothing was measured by photographic method and estimated equation from ISO 15831. Finally, the TR prediction model for Mongolian clothing was built and compared with current models for western clothing in ISO 7730 and for Tibetan clothing in previous article. Findings The results demonstrated that the total thermal insulation of Mongolian robe ensembles was much bigger than that of western clothing ensembles and ranged from 1.81clo to 3.11clo during the whole year. The fcl of the Mongolian clothing should be determined by photographic method because the differences between these two methods were much bigger from 0.6 to 13.9 percent; the TR prediction model for Mongolian robe ensembles is TR=25.57−7.13Icl, which revealed that the environmental adaptation of Mongolian clothing was much better than that of western clothing and similar to that of Tibetan clothing. Originality/value The research findings give a detailed information about the thermal property of China Mongolian clothing, and explain the environmental adaptation of Mongolian clothing to the cold and changing climate.

Background: Moving away from family can cause psychological and emotional trauma for the elderly. Accordingly, the present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of spiritual therapy on loneliness feeling among the elderly in a nursing home in Isfahan. Methods: The method was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design and a control group. The population of this study included all of the elderly in Sadeghieh nursing home in Isfahan in 2018. The sample of this study included 30 elderly people being selected by purposive sampling and then randomly included in the experimental and control groups (15 elderly people in each group). The experimental group received the therapeutic interventions related to spiritual therapy at eight sessions of 90 minutes every week for two months. Then, the subjects in both groups were re-tested. The used instruments included Russell’s loneliness questionnaire (1996). After collecting the questionnaires and extracting the raw data, the data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and analysis of covariance by SPSS23 statistical software at 0.05 error level. Results: spiritual therapy had a significant effect on loneliness among the elderly in the nursing home (p < 0.001). In this regard, this therapy could reduce loneliness among the elderly in the nursing home. The effect of spiritual therapy on loneliness among the elderly in the nursing home was 53%. Conclusion: Based on the research findings, spiritual therapy can reduce loneliness among the elderly by the techniques such as taking responsibility, assigning cases to God, strengthening the intention, and deleting negative thoughts.

The extensive use of smartphones by individuals has led innovators to develop application-based transportation services. Ride-hailing systems have been extensively operated in more than 600 cities worldwide. With the competition between taxis and ride-hailing, the number of fleets must be regulated. Identifying factors that influence the demand of taxi and ride-hailing and how the quality transit service is very important. The aims of this research are to identify the factors that influence demand for taxis and ride-hailing and the service quality of taxis and ride-hailing service. The study identified socio-demographic and trip characteristics from 949 respondents in the Jakarta Greater area, Indonesia. Respondents interviewed about the waiting time, travel time and travel costs for the origin-destination of trips that are most often done using taxi, ride-hailing, and bus. The service quality of ride-hailing and taxi was analyzed based on the respondent’s preferences from an important-performance analysis survey. The forecasting demand of taxi and ride-hailing in the Jakarta Greater area using demand-supply model is 71,660 vehicles. The research findings are that service quality of ride-hailing is better than conventional taxis based on waiting time, travel time and travel cost variable.

The decision of destination's selection is almost always accompanied by hotel selection. Hence, it is essential for tourism stakeholders to understand the marketing means' correlation toward destinations and hotels. In addition the purchasing behavior of consumers in tourism and hospitality needs to be examined in order to give the ability to optimize marketing strategies and promotional campaigns. The purpose of this chapter is to examine and present the perspectives on the island's destination and hospitality marketing held by consumers visiting Crete. The study's contribution is based on the clarification of consumers' purchase behavior and consumerism patters in tourism with reference to destination and hotel selection. It also gives an understanding for the marketing's influential importance for tourism purchases. The research was undertaken with departed tourists from Crete. As the research findings revealed, the perspectives of tourists concerning destination and hospitality marketing may vary significantly toward gender, age, education, and income. The research findings also indicate that younger and more educated consumers seem to have better knowledge and higher use of Information Technologies. On the contrary, elder people and those who are less educated are dependant to traditional ways of advertising. Furthermore, income plays a significant role dealing with additional services, better accommodation, and – in general – higher quality of provided products, whilst pricing policy still remains crucial for all tourists, no matter their financial revenues. The chapter also provides suggestions for further destination and hospitality marketing development, and information for the importance of each marketing mean used to lure tourists to visit the destination.

It is important to study the effects of heat flux on the thermo-hydraulic characteristics in a solar cavity receiver because of the non-uniform radiation flux temporally and spatially. In this article, we presented a mathematical model of thermo-hydraulic characteristics of a solar cavity receiver, considering the effect of heat flux distribution on the energy transfer (radiation–conduction–convection). Using the model, the thermo-hydraulic characteristics under high concentrated heat flux were studied and then optimized the characteristics from two aspects: tube diameter (22, 27, 32, and 38 mm) and connection structure of the heating surface (H-type, central inlet/outlet, and vertical U-type). It was found that flow distribution changed smoothly at the diameter of 27 mm with the increase of the heat flux; when the diameter of tubes at the certain distance (1.6 σHF) from the spot center was replaced by 38 mm, the thermo-hydraulic characteristics were improved. For the evaporating surfaces, the thermo-hydraulic characteristics of working fluid (water) with the central inlet/outlet connection structure were better than those of the H-type connection structure. For the surperheated surfaces, the vertical U-type connection structure was applied to obtain the high temperature steam. These research findings are helpful for the safe and stable operation of the whole solar power system.

The aim of this paper is to present the problem of the implementation of the EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) data for the processing of aircraft position determination. The main aim of the research is to develop a new computational strategy which might improve the performance of the EGNOS system in aviation, based on navigation solutions of an aircraft position, using several GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) onboard receivers. The results of an experimental test conducted by the Cessna 172 at EPDE (European Poland Deblin) (ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) code, N51°33.07’/E21°53.52’) aerodrome in Dęblin are presented and discussed in this paper. Two GNSS navigation receivers with the EGNOS positioning function for monitoring changes in the parameters of the aircraft position in real time during the landing phase were installed onboard a Cessna 172. Based on obtained research findings, it was discovered that the positioning accuracy was not higher than 2.1 m, and the integrity of positioning did not exceed 19 m. Moreover, the availability parameter was found to equal 1 (or 100%); also, no intervals in the continuity of the operation of the EGNOS system were recorded. In the paper, the results of the air test from Dęblin were compared with the parameters of positioning quality from the air test conducted in Chełm (ICAO code: EPCD, N51°04’57.8” E23°26’15”). In the air test in Chełm, the obtained parameters of EGNOS quality positioning were: better than 4.9 m for accuracy, less than 35.5 m for integrity, 100% for availability, and no breaks in continuity. Based on the results of the air tests in Dęblin and Chełm, it was concluded that the parameters of the EGNOS positioning quality in aviation for the SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) APV (Approach to Vertical guidance) procedure were satisfied in accordance with the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) requirements. The presented research method can be utilized in the SBAS APV landing procedure in Polish aviation. In this paper, the results of PDOP (Position Dilution of Precision) are presented and compared to the two air tests in Dęblin and Chełm. The maximum results of PDOP amounted to 1.4 in the air test in Dęblin, whereas they equaled 4.0 in the air test in Chełm. The paper also shows how the EGNOS system improved the aircraft position in relation to the only GPS solution. In this context, the EGNOS system improved the aircraft position from about 78% to 95% for each ellipsoidal coordinate axis.

Does nonverbal communication exist in asynchronous, text-based online education? It is commonly believed that it does not due to the absence of body language and paralanguage. An examination of the definitions and forms of nonverbal cues suggests the possibility for some of them to be transmitted through asynchronous, text-based online human interactions. To explore the presence, type, and potential impact of electronic nonverbal cues (eNVC), I conducted this research using the Exploratory Sequential Mixed-Method Design. Phase 1 constituted the preliminary, qualitative stage of this research, during which participants completed an online questionnaire to identify what actions, if any, could speak louder than words in discussion-based courses. Thematic analysis of the questionnaire answers revealed the potential existence and influence of several eNVC categories. Phase 2 constituted the quantitative stage, and served to validate Phase 1 findings through the data collection and analysis of two versions of an online survey: one for professors and another for learners. The collated research findings confirmed that eNVC exist and communicate messages beyond those sent and received through printed words in the asynchronous, online learning environment. According to study participants, these types of electronic cues contributed to the social and teaching presences, and therefore carried the potential to influence students’ levels of engagement and motivation.
