Today knowledge has become a crucial asset. Knowledge Management is a tool that nurtures and helps such assets to grow. It helps in effective utilisation of intellectual capital and enhancement of the organization’s performance. It involves blending the company’s internal & external information and transforms it into actionable knowledge. Organizations are turning to knowledge management initiatives and technologies to leverage their knowledge resources. It is important that everyone focuses on ownership of intellectual capital and utilize them efficiently for development as well as competitive edge with the help of appropriate tool. A Knowledge Management System (KMS) based on the state-of-the-art Information Technology (IT) makes that possible. Many experts believe that in future the main source of competitive advantage will be organization’s ability to leverage corporate knowledge, its distribution and to learn faster than others. Knowledge Management is an integrated systematic approach to identify, manage and share organization’s information assets available in databases, documents, policies, and procedures, as well as unarticulated expertise and experience held by individual workers. The idea behind KM is to capture not only explicit factual information but also the tacit information and knowledge that exist in an organization. The objective is to achieve the mission of the organization by sharing all types of knowledge among the employees of the organization. There are also lots of challenges as experts retire or leave organizations. Importance of knowledge database to capture expertise available for future reference and competitive edge has been felt by all. The paper is based on work of design and development of software “Information Portal at RDCIS”, developed for RDCIS – Research and Development centre of for Iron and Steel, SAIL. Today, knowledge is the strategic key resource. This paper is based on the challenges faced in the implementation of Knowledge Management system at RDCIS, SAIL. This paper focuses on the different forms of knowledge’s available in R&D Units, features, access mechanism, security mechanism, its implementation in different departments, and the platform used for implementing KMS.

With digital transformation and progress in science, developing process capabilities with limited resources has gained immense importance for higher education institutions. To provide the highest quality education services and manage the information and knowledge management processes, appropriate strategies, and related key performance management factors must be defined efficiently. In the literature, numerous models and tools have been proposed to measure knowledge management capabilities (Mohapatra et al., 2016; Imran et al., 2017; Dayan et al., 2017; Trivella et al., 2015). This chapter aims to develop a better understanding of the relationship between knowledge management processes and propose an assessment model of knowledge management system for higher education institutions to measure knowledge resources and their capabilities. To do so, the knowledge management system is identified by four main attributes (People, Processes, Technology and Culture) and each attribute is comprehensively analysed in a dedicated section.

Pre-existing knowledge buried in high-end equipment manufacturing enterprises could be effectively reused to help decision-makers develop good judgements to make decisions about the problems in new product development, which in turn speeds up and improves the quality of product innovation. Nevertheless, a knowledge-based decision support system in high-end equipment domain is still not fully accomplished due to the complication of knowledge content, fragmentation of knowledge theme, heterogeneousness of knowledge format, and decentralization of knowledge storage. To address these issues, this paper develops a high-end equipment knowledge management system (HEKM) for supporting knowledge-driven decision-making in new product development. HEKM provides three steps for knowledge management and reuse. Firstly, knowledge resources are captured and structured through a standard knowledge description template. Then, OWL ontologies are employed to explicitly and unambiguously describe the concepts of the captured knowledge and also the relationships that hold between those concepts. Finally, the Personalized PageRank algorithm together with ontology reasoning approach is used to perform knowledge navigation, where decision-makers could acquire the most relevant knowledge for a given problem through knowledge query or customized active push. The feasibility and effectiveness of HEKM are demonstrated through three industrial application examples.
