The aim of this study was to develop and implement curriculum of non-formal physical education in school and assess its effectiveness for health related physical fitness of 11-13 year old children. The research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage 51 11-13 year old children participated in a quasi-experiment for two years. Pupils were organized into E (experimental) and C (control) groups. Both groups shared the duration (1 hour) and frequency (twice a week) but were different in their education curriculum. In the second stage 72 pupils (groups A and B) attended in the research from the same schools. The curriculum of the group A was modified and differed from group E, group B - the same as group C. In both stages the focus groups performed four physical fitness tests and BMI was calculated. Group E girls’ indices of three tests and boys’ indices of all four tests were significantly (p<0.05) higher than young adolescents’ from group C. Group A girls’ flexibility and aerobic endurance as well as boys aerobic endurance were higher (p < 0.05) than pupils from group B. Results suggest that the individualized, diverse, 11‒13 years old children hobbies, needs, abilities, physical and functional powers answering non-formal curriculum, which expands knowledge and develops new skills and when various child-activating teaching methods and forms are used, positively influence their health related physical fitness.

Despite releases of governmental guidelines for promoting physical fitness among the youth in China, the performance of college students in fitness tests has been declining over the past three decades. Obesity and physical inactivity have been proposed as two main causes. However, their relative importance for improving physical fitness remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we collected longitudinal data spanning four consecutive years on the physical fitness test for students from Nanjing University, China. Physical education classes of two hours per week were mandatory for the first two years. Using mixed effects models, we quantify the within-subject effects of weight, muscular endurance, sex, and mandatory physical education courses, among other variables, on physical fitness total score. We found that, in spite of the dominance of normal weight among the students, losing weight was positively associated with the total score, with significant sex differences in the associations. Compulsory exercise provided by physical education classes per week had strong positive impacts on the total score, comparable to losing weight of roughly 15–17 kg for males and 5–10 kg for females. Half sex difference in the total score was explained by male students’ poor performance in the muscular endurance represented by pull-ups. Our results suggest that college students in China should engage in physical activity of higher levels to improve their physical fitness, with a heightened awareness of extra fat under normal weight and insufficient muscular endurance.

The aim of the research was to determine the changes in physical fi tness of girls from the 11th grades promoting their self-education and training their least developed physical qualities. The sample of the research included one experimental and one control group, each consisting of 24 female subjects (n = 48) from the X school in Klaipėda. The subjects of each group were selected using the random sampling method. Each group had two weekly PE lessons according to the Lithuanian General Physical Education Curriculum.Testing physical fi tness based on the guidelines of the Eurofi t tests was performed in the middle of September, 2003 and the middle of April, 2004. The pedagogical experiment lasted for 7 months. To determine physical fi tness of subjects, the Eurofi t tests were used in the following order: sit-and-reach, standing broad jump, sit-ups, bent arm hang, shuttle run 10 × 5 metres. The results were assessed according to the National Eurofi t Reference Scales. It was found that physical fi tness of girls from the 11th grades was low: according to the Lithuanian Eurofi t Reference Scales, the test score in standing broad jump was 3, the test score in sit-and-reach, sit-ups and shuttle run 10×5 m was 4 and the test score in bent arm hang was 5. In the fi rst tests it was determined that the least developed traits in subjects were the strength of their leg and abdominal muscles and suppleness. For the experimental group, the physical education programme was modifi ed with greater focus on training strength and suppleness. PE lessons for the experimental group included training pupils’ awareness about PE and promoting of self-education. For this reason, the girls were taught to calculate and evaluate their body mass index, they had theoretical lessons about the importance of strength and suppleness as physical qualities and methods how to train them, the importance of exercising, methods of stretching and personal exercising, self-assessment of physical condition. The programme designed to promote the need for self-development and to train strength and suppleness had a po-sitive effect on physical fi tness changes in girls: most of physical qualities increased signifi cantly in girls from the experimental group. Keywords: physical fitness, physical qualities, physical self-development.

Aim: to develop and experimentally substantiate the method of physical education for orphans born to HIV-infected mothers, based on the use of moveable games for the development of physical qualities, metered running, breathing exercises in orphanage conditions. Material and methods: 28 children of 5-6 years old took part in the experiment. The experimental group included orphans born to HIV-infected mothers (14 children). The control group consisted of orphans with poor health (14 children). The research was carried out on the basis of the health care institution "Regional specialized children's home" Green Gai "for orphans and children left without parental care. The experiment lasted for 12 months, at the beginning and at the end of the experiment anthropometric studies, functional state testing (spirography, Genchi's test, Stange's test), physical fitness tests (running from a high start at 30 meters, a long jump from the spot, throwing a ball from - for the head, standing) Results: An experimental method of physical education for orphans in an orphanage, born to HIV-infected mothers, was developed and implemented. The technique includes the use of moveable games for the development of physical qualities, dosed running exercises and complexes of respiratory gymnastics, taking into account the age characteristics of children of preschool age. A significant improvement (p<0,05) in the indicators of physical development, functional state and physical fitness of children in the experimental group was shown in comparison with the control group. Conclusions: As a result of using the proposed method, it was possible to reduce the incidence of acute respiratory infections in children born to HIV-infected mothers from 8-10 to 4-3 times a year. It has been established that the simplicity and availability of the developed methods of organizing physical education allows them to be used not only by specialists in the field of physical education of preschool children, but also by educators of preschool institutions.
