This study aims to analyse the factors affecting the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in the province of South Sumatra, Indonesia. Data of 100 MSMEs were collected through questionnaires in the 15 regencies/cities in South Sumatra. The statistical analysis used was Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) processed through AMOS. The results evidence that the external factors of capital support, business partners, and infrastructure directly have no direct effects but indirectly affect the performance of MSMEs in South Sumatra. Also, the availability of resources and environmental conditions; and the capability of business owners and employees indirectly affect the performance of MSMEs in South Sumatra. Lastly, the use of technology and research impact the performance of MSMEs in South Sumatra directly and indirectly through the availability of resources and environmental conditions and business owners and employees' capability. Theoretically, this study expands the MSMEs literature by discussing factors (i.e., external and internal) affecting MSMEs' performance holistically. Practically, this study is beneficial for the government, practitioners, and policymakers.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the international business strategy, key driving factors and the major barriers that may hinder the internationalisation progress of Malaysian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach – Based on the aims of the study, the paper encompasses both quantitative and qualitative data. For quantitative data, structured questionnaires were used, and a total of 216 SMEs that engaged in international business participated using purposeful sampling, covering all the states in Peninsular Malaysia. For the collection of qualitative data, the study involved in-depth interviews with 25 owners/managers of SMEs. Findings – The findings indicate that the motives of SMEs for international expansion are varied, and that SMEs still face many institutional challenges, which have prevented them from making a greater contribution. Research limitations/implications – Due to lack of resources, firms from West Malaysia were included. West Malaysian firms may well possess characteristics concerning the challenges and issues to internationalisation that are unique to their region. Originality/value – The paper addresses a knowledge gap in respect of the internationalisation process of SMEs in the context of Southeast Asia. The findings of this paper will have relevance for policymaking and supportive measures at the government level to create an environment that will stimulate the competitiveness of SMEs in their attempts for internationalisation.

The difficulty in accessing loans is one of the major barriers to the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. Low accessibility to capital forces SMEs to spend both official and unofficial costs in order to obtain loans, and/or to access the unofficial market at higher interest rates, thereby increasing cost of production of enterprises. Studies suggest that the determinants of bank loan processing through which small and medium enterprises can access official loans include: characteristics of enterprises; indicators, reflecting the performance of enterprises; characteristics of loans; characteristics of enterprises, enterprise owners; geographical position of enterprises; the creditworthiness of enterprises and the role of the network.Purpose of the study. The aim of this paper is the quantitative analysis of the factors, affecting accessibility to credit capital of small and medium enterprises in Vietnam.Materials and methods. This study was conducted on the basis of a survey in December 2017. The survey includes 301 enterprises in Hanoi city. Selected enterprises are also enterprises, surveyed in the annual enterprise survey by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam. This paper uses the Probit and Logit regression approach to estimate the impact of factors, affecting the disbursement probability of a loan of an enterprise. The number of SMEs accounts for 56.69% of the samples. The number of enterprises, applying for a bank loan accounts for 58.4% of the total samples, of which the percentage of disbursed loans for SMEs accounts for only 47.3%. For enterprises without a bank loan, eliminating the reasons for the lack of demand and unwish to be in debt, the main reasons not to access bank loans are high interest rates, complicated loan procedures and insufficient collateral.Results.The results obtained from the Logistic and Probit models show that the estimated coefficients are statistically significant, affecting the probability of taking a business loan, accepted by financial institutions. Although the coefficients, estimated from Logistics model are larger than those estimated from the Probit model, the estimated results show that the direction of impact of the variables in two estimation techniques gives quite similar results.Conclusion.Based on the results of this study, the Government of Vietnam should implement policies to support SMEs in the direction of improving their access to capital. The credit institutions should design products and services suitable to the characteristics of SMEs in Vietnam.

Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, Indonesia's economic growth in the first quarter of 2020 has fallen to 2.97; it recorded -5.35 in the second quarter and -3.49 in the third quarter (Mulyani, 2020). This decline in growth has undoubtedly shaken micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). According to the Ministry of Cooperatives for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (2020), 18.83% of MSMEs suffered hampered production, 22.9% experienced decreased demand, 18.87% faced difficulties in obtaining raw materials and 20.01% encountered hampered distribution. MSMEs in Indonesia contribute 60.4% of GDP and 97% of employment (Economic Indicator, 2019). However, they were severely affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. Therefore, examining the performance of MSMEs during the period of COVID 19 pandemic is crucial. Moreover, the pandemic has resulted chaotic economic conditions and changes in social order. Economic chaos and changes in social order could either strengthen or weaken the resilience of MSMEs. According to Tencer & Cadoso (2014), innovation arises because of chaos and unhealthy market domination. Ivanus & Repanovici (2016) mentioned that MSMEs need to have clear innovation strategy, adjust to market demand, make changes in production costs and show product quality in order to increase the economic growth. As supported by Christensen et al. (2018), MSMEs innovate to ensure their business continuity is maintained. Thus, innovation is particularly important for business survival in the era of Covid 19 pandemic. However, Martinez-Vergara and Vall-Pasola (2020) found that some businesses did not innovate. As such, there is a need to scrutinize further on the influence of business owners' characteristics on innovation and its effect on performance. AbstractIn the present era, women are recognized as successful entrepreneurs through their strong desire, qualities, and capabilities for robust economic development. Due to such an important contribution of women in economic development, we propose to investigate the factors which affect women entrepreneur’s success in Pakistan. Data were collected through structured questionnaires from 181 registered SMEs operating in Pakistan. A conceptual model is developed, while SPSS and AMOS software’s are used for analysis. The results indicate that the internal factors including the need for achievements, risk-taking, and self-confidence and external factors including economic factors and socio-cultural factors have a positive and significant influence on the success of women-owned enterprises. This research recommends Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), policymakers, and practitioners to encourage women entrepreneurs to run their businesses for the long term by providing a variety of incentives and supports related to those internal and external factors. Numerous studies have been conducted to test the different factors’ effects on women’s entrepreneurial success, but our study investigated some psychological, cultural, and religious factors that are still almost untouched especially in Pakistan. The current study also contributes to the existing literature through empirical shreds of evidence.

Developments in the current era of globalization are very dependent on the economic sector which is the benchmark of success carried out by the government. The role of the community in national development in the economic field is the existence of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). To increase the role of MSMEs as a benchmark for the success of the economic sector, there must be support from the government, such as assistance for business owners with limited costs. The purpose of this study is to determine community business groups as a measure of the level of business, making it easier for the government to provide assistance. The K-Means Clustering method is a method used for grouping business levels based on the income that exists in today's society. The result of this research is a website-based business-level grouping system used by the Cooperatives and SMEs Office by grouping them into micro, small and medium-sized businesses based on income/assets.

The Covid-19 pandemic disaster in Indonesia has caused the economy to be the most affected sector. In order to provide solutions for the government in improving the economy through small and medium enterprises, an investigation on business and entrepreneurship solutions is required to support the economy. This study aims to analyze the determinants of entrepreneurial success when a disaster occurs, such as natural disasters, war, and the Covid-19 pandemic as it is today. Business experience, entrepreneurship education, innovation in business, and strategies to produce successful entrepreneurs, are variables that will be tested. The respondents are people who have had experience selling products online. Two hundred seventeen (217) respondents have participated in a questionnaire survey which was created and distributed online through social media. Data validity and data reliability were tested using the Windows SPPS 25.0 application, followed by analyzing data with Structural Equation Model (SEM) using the Windows Amos 23.0 application. The quantitative research results show that strategy affects entrepreneurial success; however, business experience, entrepreneurship education, and business innovation have not related to entrepreneurial success. The research analysis influences the importance of the strategies identified in dealing with a business to be successful. The contribution resulting from this research is how the small and medium enterprises should respond to their efforts in becoming successful entrepreneurs using good business strategies.

This study investigated the behavioral adoption of electronic commerce (EC) among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in China. This was undertaken by integrating the Technological, Organizational, and Environmental (TOE) framework into the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The data generated from 349 SMEs were analyzed with SPSS and SmartPLs 3.0 via the utilization of the structural equation modeling (SEM) procedure. The results reveal that while the environmental factor was a positive predictor of the performance expectancy of EC among SMEs, it does not, however, encourage the adoption of EC. Again, while the knowledge factor was not significant in driving the performance expectancy of EC, it was a significant determinant of the adoption of EC among SMEs. Also, the study found that organizational factor was a positive predictor of both performance expectancy and the adoption of EC by SMEs. The technological factor was not a significant predictor of the intention to use EC but was significant in determining the performance expectancy of EC. Finally, the study demonstrated that the performance expectancy of EC was a significant predictor of the behavioral adoption of EC. The managerial and research implications of these findings are deliberated.

Mobile applications act as valuable tools that can be used by entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) alike to market their products/services and considerably reduce costs of doing business. The government of Kenya has invested billions of shillings in laying of fiber optic cables in Kenya, improving Kenya‘s ICT sector and coming up with projects aimed at promoting the use of technology among businesses and citizens alike. With all of these investments, there are challenges that hinder the use of business mobile applications by SMEs. Although context awareness in mobile applications is gaining recognition among mobile user and developer communities, many design scenarios still do not incorporate required context awareness as one of their primary goals. Although there are strong context awareness frameworks for mobile applications, there is still potential to improve the usability of virtual learning systems. The study established that the concept of context independence including the physical context independence and the logical context independence from the applications and mobile devices provides a graceful solution in the form of a methodological framework for the development of context-aware systems for SMEs in Nakuru Town.

Manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the breeding ground for human capital competencies, creativity and innovation, which are important inputs for manufacturing competitiveness. In Kenya, manufacturing SMEs contribute 14% of gross domestic product (GDP), and train and employ 30% of the workforce. However, their growth and competitiveness are undermined by challenges in the firms’ operations management. Consequently, the firms struggle to survive as competitive enterprises, both domestically and globally. The purpose of this study was to establish how entrepreneurial orientation (EO) enhances the relationship between operations management and firm performance. Quantitative primary data were collected from managers of 83 firms registered by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers in the food and beverage sub-sector using a self-administered questionnaire. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the data for relationships between the study variables. The study found a positive relationship between operations management and EO, and between EO and firm performance. The study also found that EO is a mediator of the relationship between operations management and performance of manufacturing SMEs in Kenya. The study recommends that for manufacturing SMEs to effectively deploy operations management competencies and gain global competitiveness, they must engage EO as a strategy to foment organisational experimentation and exploration and commercialize the resultant innovations. At the macroeconomic level, the government should support manufacturing SMEs through enactment and promotion of policies that enable operations managers to exploit their firm’s EO stock.
