The impacts of urbanization on landscapes andecosystems have been increasing globally. Howurban landscape is shaped, in other wordsdesigned, is a fundamental human activity interms of urban sustainability. Landscape is oftendealed with mostly by aesthetic concerns whichpresents sustainable/ecological/naturalqualities only at formal level, is limited bylegislative framework, hardly responds tohuman needs and behavioral patterns and lacksa holistic approach within the Turkish spatialdesign practice. This study aims to develop alandscape matrix in the example of Istanbul(Golden Horn) region as an open spaceoperation model within the existing urbantexture, which the built environment has beenrepresented with different layers of historicaldevelopments. The matrix presented in thisstudy presents a design process on the basis ofurban ecology as well as the physical and socialrelations of the study area located in the GoldenHorn, one of the cultural identity values ofIstanbul, formed by urban layers belonging todifferent historical periods. It is thought that theconstruction of the coastal and hinterlandrelationship through the open space system bothcontributes to the dissolution of the urbantexture towards the coastal zone andstrengthens the character of the waterfront.

Fado – the Voice of Portugal
SUMMARY
Fado – a characteristic genre of Portugal music which dates back to the mid-19th century – has gained importance and popularity for a several dozen years, not only in Portugal but in many other places in the world as well. Fado songs emanate with an emotional load and symbolic message especially due to the interpretations of expressive performers (such as Amalia Rodrigues or Mariza). Fado is, at the same time, one of the clearest genres in international circles of the world music and at the same time it is an image of the cultural identity of Portugal. It coexists with other genres of performative musical-poetic art, both popular and artistic ones; moreover as the matrix of identity of this country it is widespread among Portugal diaspora. The article presents the history of fado songs and their poetic-musical specifi city. The fi rst part of the study concerns historical description of the genre, the second part discusses the poetics of fado song – from the angle of its verbal text, music features, taking into consideration the most famous singers.

As a Western Canadian artist, my work investigates methods through which we construct and deconstruct narratives of personal and cultural identity and the role of self-performance within these practices. My work is situated within the intersection of Performance Studies, visual art, and local scholarship. Through art I seek to enrich the growing body of knowledge regarding photography as a performance of identity, and to document personal experiences in the region of Southern Alberta. This photographic project is indicative of my tendency to work out in the landscape while not attempting to “capture” traditional landscape “scenery”. My goal is instead to get to know a place, and to discover or resist some kind of personal, cultural or topographical attachment; it is to discover what it is that draws me in (or repels me). Thus with this project, I do not seek to do an ethnographic study of what the rural places around Calgary Alberta may mean to certain people. Rather, I am interested in the intersection of space with place and how we transform wide open space into meaningful place.

Urban open space is of great significance to the compact urban center. It is not only a place for people’s public life, but also an ecological regulator in the compact and high-density urban environment. It has important ecological, cultural, economic and other functions for the development of the compact urban center. In this paper, the authors analyze the central urban open space system and green economy planning based on spatial clustering algorithms and ahp model. The results shows that the difference on green open space is much more easily becoming bigger in fast urbanization. This is also the key to improve the quality of regional urban open space at present. By analyzing the spatial pattern of urban open space system at different times by ArcGIS. We found that, in the late period of rapid urbanization, spatial differentiation is more obvious. Under the guidance of landscape, the research on the integration strategy of the open space in the compact urban center will help to establish the integration system of the open space in the compact urban center and enrich the dimension of urban landscape design. At the same time, this research realizes the intensive utilization of the space in the urban center.

Between traditional and contemporary there are two contradictory visions. The first adopts originality and returning to the traditional, while the second advocates modernity and liberation from the old. The present paper discusses how to benefit from the present facilities without losing features of the past when developing new neighbour-hoods. Al-Dira', a traditional quarter in Al-Jouf, Saudi Arabia, is elected as a case study within which the housing unit and the urban pattern are analysed. Visual documentation, surveying, mapping, and interviews constitute essential tools to get an insight on the traditional planning and design process. On the other side, Al-Rabwa, a typical contemporary officially planned district, is investigated. It is concluded that the need for modernization should be balanced with originality. Understanding forces that shaped traditional quarters and are still embedded in the community offers a stream of information that can be utilized in contemporary development. A responsive development needs to consider local identity while formulating compact low rise buildings with courtyards and carefully positioned openings, small scale open space system, straight roads for cars and protected walkways for pedestrians, well distributed parking lots, and integrated relationship between housing, mosque and market.
