Azospirillum brasilense is a bacterium known for its biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in wheat crops. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research defining how much mineral N should be applied to maximize the efficiency of BNF and attain high, economically sustainable yields. Moreover, it would be interesting to investigate whether adding urea with N- (n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) urease inhibitor might increase BNF in grasses. The objective was to study the effect of inoculation with A. brasilense, associated with varying doses and sources of N, and economically evaluating the yield of irrigated wheat. The experiment was conducted in Selvíria - MS in crop years 2014 and 2015 in Oxisol soil type that was not-tilled. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications, in a 2 × 5 × 2 factorial scheme, where 2 N sources (urea and Super N - urea with urease inhibitor enzyme), 5 nitrogen fertilization doses in top-dressing (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1), were applied to wheat crops with or without the inoculation of A. brasilense. Our results showed that the supply of N through Super N was not economically superior to the use of conventional urea; therefore, we recommend the use of urea because of the ease of acquisition. The application of 140 kg ha-1 of N combined with inoculation with A. brasilense showed higher grain yield. However, the 50 kg ha-1 dose of urea in the absence of inoculation provided greater economic viability in wheat cultivation, but was not sufficient to ensure high profitability with grain productivity.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense, associated with N rates and sources, in soil of the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna), on the grain yield of irrigated wheat (Triticum aestivum). The experiment was carried out under a no-tillage system in a Typic Haplustox. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with four replicates, in a 2x5x2 factorial arrangement: two N sources (urea and urea with NBPT urease inhibitor); five N rates applied as topdressing (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1); and with or without seed inoculation with A.brasilense. The increase in the N rates positively affected spike length, number of spikelets and of grains per spike, number of spikes per meter, N accumulation in the straw, leaf chlorophyll content, and grain yield of irrigated wheat, regardless of the use of NBPT urease inhibitor with conventional urea. Singly, inoculation with A.brasilense does not affect production components and grain yield, despite the increase in N content in wheat straw. The inoculation with A.brasilense, associated with the application of 140 kg ha-1 N, provides the highest grain yield of irrigated wheat cropped after corn in low-altitude Cerrado.

ABSTRACT The use of microorganisms in agriculture such as Azospirillum brasilense and the cultivation of cover crops in the off season, together with nitrogen fertilization, may be interesting alternatives to increase crop yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth, production and nitrogen concentration of maize grown in succession to cover crops and their interactions with A. brasilense inoculation and topdressing mineral N fertilization. The experiment was conducted on Oxisol, in randomized block design in split-split-plot scheme with four repetitions. The plots consisted of four cover crops: jackbean (Canavalia ensiformis), dwarf pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis) and spontaneous vegetation. In the subplots, with or without inoculation of A. brasilense in maize seeds, and in the sub-subplots: with or without topdressing N fertilization. It was verified that jackbean can generate increments of up to 8.3% in grains per ear, 6.9% in length of ear and 15.2% in mass of one hundred grains. Consequently, the grain yield was higher in this treatment (18%). The inoculation with A. brasilense and topdressing N fertilization did not generate significant increments in maize production components, as observed for cover crops.

This work aimed to analyze the economic feasibility of the irrigation system by dripping and nitrogen fertilization in jambu production. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Igarapé-Açu, a site owned by UFRA, in protected cultivation, from May to July in 2016. The treatments consisted in four soil water tensions (12, 18, 24 and 30 kPa) and four nitrogen doses (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1). The economic analysis of the jambu irrigated production was sustained by the theory of producing costs considering both depreciation cost and alternative cost. The treatment with the highest profit was managed at 18 kPa with a nitrogen dose of 50 kg ha-1, with a profit of R$ 1,548.54 for an area of 1,000 m.². The drip irrigation and nitrogen fertilization were economically viable for the jambu crop.

The lack of studies on the benefits of growth-promoting bacteria associated with sources and doses of nitrogen fertilizers in maize in tropical regions has raised many doubts on the use of nitrogen management, as well as recommendation for the adequate dose for maize production. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the doses and sources of nitrogen associated with the absence and presence of seed inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense in the contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S in the roots, culm and leaf of maize plants. It was used a completely randomized design, in a 4 x 2 x 2 factorial scheme, consisting of four nitrogen doses (0; 60; 120; and 180 kg ha-1 of N), two sources of N (common urea and urea treated with urease inhibitor) and absence and presence of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense, with four replications. The results identified that the N doses positively influenced the concentration of N, P, and S in the culm of maize plants. The use of urea with urease inhibitor was not efficient in optimizing nitrogen fertilization, providing similar accumulations of macronutrients to common urea. The inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense promoted a concentration of 10.4% of N in the stem when compared to urea without inoculation. Seed treatment with Azospirillum brasilense at a concentration of 1 g / kg of seed at a dose of 180 kg ha-1 of N provided a higher content of macronutrients in corn, regardless of the sources of common urea or urea treated with a urease inhibitor

Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense associated with N sources and doses in a Cerrado biome soil by evaluating the grain yield of irrigated corn in economic terms. The experiment was conducted in Selvíria, MS, Brazil under a no-till system on a Latossolo Vermelho distrófico (Oxisol). The experiment was set up as a randomized block design with four replications in a 2 × 5 × 2 factorial arrangement consisting of two sources of N (urea and urea with NBPT urease enzyme inhibitor) and five N doses applied as top-dressing (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1), with and without the inoculation of seeds with A. brasilense. Inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense makes corn growth much more profitable, irrespective of the dose and source of N. Addition of 200 kg ha-1 N in the form of conventional urea coupled with inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense increases grain yield; however, the highest economic return is obtained with N applied at 100 kg ha-1 with conventional urea and inoculation.

NBPT (N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide), a urease inhibitor, has been reported as one of the most promising compounds to maximize urea nitrogen use in agricultural systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of irrigated wheat fertilized with urea or urea + NBPT as single or split application. The experiment was conducted from June to October 2006 in Viçosa, MG, Brazil. The experimental design followed a 2×2 factorial scheme, in which urea or urea + NBPT were combined with two modes of application: full dose at sowing (60kg ha-1) or split (20kg ha-1 at sowing + 40kg ha-1 as topdressing at tillering), in randomized blocks with ten replications. The split application of nitrogen fertilization does not improve the yield wheat under used conditions. The use of urease inhibitor improves the grain yield of wheat crop when urea is applied in topdressing at tillering, but its use does not promote difference when urea is applied in the furrow at planting.

There is a lack of more comprehensive research defining how much mineral N can be applied as regards the efficiency of BNF to attain high with Azospirillum brasilense, what is a bacterium that stands out for its biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in corn crops, reaching economically sustainable yields. Moreover, it would be interesting to investigate the use of silicon, which exerts numerous benefits on grasses, especially when the plants are subjected to biotic and abiotic stresses. The aim of this work was to study a synergistic effect between the inoculation with A. brasilense and the application of silicon, thus enabling a higher efficiency of nitrogen fertilization, evaluating the grain yield of irrigated corn in economic terms. The experiment was conducted in Selvíria, MS, Brazil, under a no-till system, on a Latossolo Vermelho distrófico (Oxisol). The experiment was set up as a randomized block design with four replications, in a 2 × 5 × 2 factorial arrangement consisting of two soil corrective sources (dolomitic limestone and Ca and Mg silicate as source of Si); five doses of N (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1); with and without inoculation with A. brasilense. The inoculation makes the corn increase much more profitable, irrespective of N doses and corrective source. The N dose of 200 kg ha-1 with dolomitic limestone, associated with inoculation provided greater grain yield. However, the highest economic return was obtained at the N dose of 100 kg ha-1, with dolomitic limestone application and inoculation.

Azospirillum brasilense plays an important role in biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in grasses. However, further studies are needed to define how much mineral N can be applied while simultaneously maintaining BNF contribution and maximizing crop yield and to determine the impact of these practices on soil fertility. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effect of inoculation with A. brasilense, in conjunction with varying N doses and sources in a Cerrado soil, on soil chemical attributes after two years of irrigated wheat production. The experiment was initiated in Selvíria - MS under no-tillage production in an Oxisol in 2014 and 2015. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four replications, and treatments were arranged in a 2 x 5 x 2 factorial arrangement as follows: two N sources (urea and Super N - urea with inhibitor of the enzyme urease NBPT (N - (n-butyl thiophosphoric triamide))), five N rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1), and with or without seed inoculation with A. brasilense. The increase in N rates did not influence the chemical soil attributes. Super N acidified the soil more compared to urea. A. brasilense inoculation reduced the effect of soil acidification in intensive irrigated wheat cultivation; however, the base extraction was higher, resulting in a lower soil CEC after cultivation with inoculation. Therefore, the cultivation of wheat inoculated with A. brasilense was not harmful to soil fertility because it did not reduce the base saturation and organic matter content (P, K, Ca, Mg, and S).

ABSTRACT Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) efficiency can be increased by co-inoculation with bradyrhizobia and Azospirillum brasilense, allowing even greater uptake of water and nutrients, leading to higher yields. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the technical and economic viability of soybean in the Cerrado, according to the cultivars and co-inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense. The experiment was conducted in Selvíria, MS, in no-tillage system, in Oxisol, arranged in a randomized block design in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme with two cultivars (‘Potência’ and ‘Valiosa’), with and without co-inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense in the seed. Co-inoculation with A. brasilense increases grain yield in the cultivars ‘Potência’ and ‘Valiosa’, being economically viable. However, using the cultivar ‘Potência’ co-inoculated led to the highest profitability.

Nitrogen fertilization in wheat is the item that most impacts production costs when it comes to fertilization, due to its importance and demand for this crop. Thus, organic fertilization and nitrogen fixing bacteria can be management strategies to supply the nitrogen demand. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of the bacterium A. brasilense associated with organic fertilization and mineral fertilization on some plant parameters and on the final productivity of wheat grains. The experimental design was a randomized block, with 8 treatments and 8 repetitions, with the following treatments: T1: Control; T2: A. brasilense; T3: 100% N-mineral; T4: 100% N-mineral + A brasilense; T5: 50% N-mineral + 50% N-organic; T6: 50% N-mineral + 50% N-organic + A. brasilense; T7: 100% N-organic; T8: 100% N-organic + A. brasilense. The parameters of the plant and the final productivity of wheat grains showed that the use of the bacterium A. brasilense was not an efficient strategy, however, in relation to the fertilization sources in the final grain productivity, the use of urea isolated or associated with organic fertilization did not differ from each other and were superior to the other treatments.
