The aim of this study is to examine the predictive role of students’ social achievement goals and classroom incivility levels in their emotion regulation skills. The study was conducted with 309 university students and used “Social Achievement Goal Scale”, “The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale” and “Classroom Incivility Scale” as data collection tools. The study was carried out with 309 university students in Turkey during 2016-2017 academic year (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students). The findings obtained from regression analysis revealed that social achievement goals and classroom incivility account 15% of total changes in the difficulties faced during emotion regulation. As for the sub goals of the study, it was found that “social achievement goals” mean score of females was higher than that of males; males had higher “classroom incivility” levels than females; and the mean score of females for “difficulties in emotional regulation” was higher than that of males. While no difference was found in “incivility” factor in terms of “age” variable, there were significant differences in “social achievement goals” and “the difficulties in emotional regulation” factors. Similarly, there was no significant difference in “social achievement goals” and “classroom incivility factors” in terms of “class year” variable, but a significant difference was found for “difficulties in emotion regulation” factor. In addition, the results did not reveal any significant differences in “social achievement goals” and “classroom incivility” factors according to “perceived parental attitude”; however, a significant difference was found in “the difficulties in emotional regulation” factor. The research findings were discussed within the framework of the related literature.

Background: Patients with spinal cord injuries suffer from some psychological problems, such as inadequate emotional regulation and flexibility for adapting to the post-injury condition. In this regard, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) can improve psychological flexibility and emotional regulation. Objectives: The main goal of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of ACT in improving psychological flexibility and emotional regulation in patients with spinal cord injuries. Methods: This quasi-experimental design study was based on a pretest-posttest method with a control group. The study population consisted of all patients with spinal cord injury referred to Jalaeipour Rehabilitation Center in Tehran. The study sample included 30 patients with spinal cord injury selected by the purposive sampling method. The inclusion criteria were patients aged 20 to 55 years, residing in Tehran, and with at least a high school diploma. The injury duration varied between one and five years, and the injuries were thoracic and lumbar injuries and an intermediate score of psychological flexibility and emotion regulation. The exclusion criteria were patients with cervical spinal cord injuries, as well as patients who were simultaneously receiving another psychological treatment together with the subjects who suffered from brain damage. Patients were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups based on random numbers. There were 15 patients in each group. The intervention group received ACT during eight sessions (1.5-hour group therapy) held once a week at Jalaeipour Rehabilitation Center in Tehran (2018), while the control group received routine care. Dennis and Vander Wal’s cognitive flexibility inventory (CFI) and Gross and John’s emotion regulation questionnaire (ERQ) were completed before and one week after the intervention. The data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Results: There was a significant difference in demographic indicators between the two groups. Based on MANCOVA with the baseline score, the mean scores of psychological flexibility and emotion regulation had a significant difference regarding the results of ACT between the experimental and control groups (P < 0.05). Conclusions: According to the findings, ACT can improve psychological flexibility and emotional regulation in patients with spinal cord injuries.

AbstractBackground and aimsDifficulties in Emotion Regulation (ER) are related to the etiology and maintenance of several psychological disorders, including Eating Disorders (ED) and Gambling Disorder (GD). This study explored the existence of latent empirical groups between both disorders, based on ER difficulties and considering a set of indicators of personality traits, the severity of the disorder, and psychopathological distress.MethodsThe sample included 1,288 female and male participants, diagnosed with ED (n = 906) and GD (n = 382). Two-step clustering was used for the empirical classification, while analysis of variance and chi-square tests were used for the comparison between the latent groups.ResultsThree empirical groups were identified, from the most disturbed ER profile (Subgroup 1) to the most functional (Subgroup 3). The ER state showed a linear relationship with the severity of each disorder and the psychopathological state. Different personality traits were found to be related to the level of emotion dysregulation.Discussion and conclusionIn this study, three distinct empirical groups based on ER were identified across ED and GD, suggesting that ER is a transdiagnostic construct. These findings may lead to the development of common treatment strategies and more tailored approaches.

Internal resources are likely to have great brunt on embracing different type of coping strategies among those who have encountered negative experiences/events in life like diagnosed with cancer. Among these coping strategies is cognitive emotion regulation. There were 44 breast cancer patients selected as sample of study from the cosmopolitan city of Hyderabad. The objective of the study was to determine if there was a difference between younger and older women suffering with breast cancer undergoing treatment with respect to cognitive emotion regulation. To determine if there is a difference between employed and not employed women suffering with breast cancer undergoing treatment with respect to cognitive emotion regulation . The instrument used in the study is cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire Analysis of the obtained results shows that there was significant difference between younger and older women with cancer, with reference to the dimension of rumination. There was significant differences between employed and unemployed women suffering with breast cancer undergoing treatment with respect to only focus on planning. This would propose modifications in intervention studies and tailor make them according to stressors instead of personal variable of age and consider their role behaviors related to their occupational status.

Abstract Background Inefficient mechanisms of emotional regulation appear essential in understanding the development and maintenance of binge-eating disorder (BED). Previous research focused mainly on a very limited emotion regulation strategies in BED, such as rumination, suppression, and positive reappraisal. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess a wider range of emotional regulation strategies (i.e. acceptance, refocusing on planning, positive refocusing, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, self-blame, other-blame, rumination, and catastrophizing), as well as associations between those strategies and binge-eating-related beliefs (negative, positive, and permissive), and clinical variables (eating disorders symptoms, both anxiety, depressive symptoms, and alexithymia). Methods Women diagnosed with BED (n = 35) according to the DSM-5 criteria and healthy women (n = 41) aged 22–60 years were assessed using: the Eating Attitudes Test-26, the Eating Beliefs Questionnaire-18, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20, the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale. Statistical analyses included: Student t - tests or Mann–Whitney U tests for testing group differences between BED and HC group, and Pearson’s r coefficient or Spearman’s rho for exploring associations between the emotion regulation difficulties and strategies, and clinical variables and binge-eating-related beliefs in both groups. Results The BED group presented with a significantly higher level of emotion regulation difficulties such as: nonacceptance of emotional responses, lack of emotional clarity, difficulties engaging in goal-directed behavior, impulse control difficulties, and limited access to emotion regulation strategies compared to the healthy controls. Moreover, patients with BED were significantly more likely to use maladaptive strategies (rumination and self-blame) and less likely to use adaptive strategies (positive refocusing and putting into perspective). In the clinical group, various difficulties in emotion regulation difficulties occurred to be positively correlated with the level of alexithymia, and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Regarding emotion regulation strategies, self-blame and catastrophizing were positively related to anxiety symptoms, but solely catastrophizing was related to the severity of eating disorder psychopathology. Conclusions Our results indicate an essential and still insufficiently understood role of emotional dysregulation in BED. An especially important construct in this context seems to be alexithymia, which was strongly related to the majority of emotion regulation difficulties. Therefore, it might be beneficial to pay special attention to this construct when planning therapeutic interventions, as well as to the maladaptive emotion regulation strategies self-blame and catastrophizing, which were significantly related to BED psychopathology.

Background: Marital infidelity is a crisis for couples and families. identifying an effective treatment approach at the lowest cost can be effective in preventing and intervening in injuries caused by infidelity. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of emotion-based couple therapy and self-compassion-based therapy on emotion regulation in women affected by infidelity. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was designed as pre-test-post-test with follow-up. The study population included all couples involved in marital infidelity who referred to Iranmehr Counseling and Psychological Services Center in Rasht, Iran in 2020, from which 20 couples were selected as the sample by available sampling method. Granfsky emotion regulation questionnaire was used to collect data and emotion-focused couple therapy sessions and self-compassion-based therapy were performed for 16 sessions of 4 hours (one treatment every two hours) on a weekly basis. After three months of treatment sessions, couples also participated in a follow-up session in order to measure the duration of treatment. Data were analyzed using combined analysis of variance. Results: The results showed that both therapies are effective in increasing the emotional regulation of couples, but there is no significant difference between emotion-oriented couples therapy and compassion-based therapy on emotion regulation (F = 1.57 and P = 0.218). Conclusion: Both treatment approaches in counseling centers were very effective in helping incompatible couples to improve and reduce marital problems, increasing satisfaction, especially in couples affected by infidelit

Abstract Background: Accumulated evidence suggests that individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are at particular risk of developing alcohol use disorder (AUD). Yet, little is known about the mechanisms under this high comorbidity. This study aimed to elucidate the process of the development of alcohol related problems among individuals with elevated social anxiety. We investigated the moderation effect of difficulties in emotion regulation on the relationship between symptoms of social anxiety, coping and conformity motives and alcohol related problems. Methods: In a sample of university students (N = 647) in South Korea, we examined whether cognitive (fear of negative evaluation), behavioral (social avoidance), and physiological symptoms (concerns over physiological symptoms) of social anxiety affect alcohol related problems with the mediation of coping and conformity motives. Furthermore, difficulties in emotion regulation were hypothesized to moderate each mediational path. Results: Results showed that the fear of negative evaluation and concerns over physiological symptoms were associated with alcohol related problems with the mediation of conformity and coping motives, respectively. As hypothesized, each path was moderated by difficulties in emotion regulation. Conclusions: Findings suggest that coping and conformity motives to cope with cognitive and physiological symptoms of social anxiety were related to alcohol related problems. In addition, individuals with high levels of difficulties in emotion regulation were prone to exhibit more alcohol related problems.

This study was aimed to compare the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy with dialectical behavior therapy on emotion regulation, positive and negative affection, aggressive and self-harm behaviors of 13 to 16-year-old female students. The results showed that both CBT and DBT have a significant effect on increasing emotional regulation and positive affect, and decreasing negative affect, reducing aggressive behavior and self-harm. Also there was no significant difference between two treatments in increasing the positive affection and decreasing negative affection, but the effect of DBT on increasing emotional regulation and reducing self-harm and aggressive behaviors was significantly more than CBT.

This research aims to examine the relationships between personality traits and the grit levels of university students. Participants of the study are 379 students (304 females, 75 males). The age range of the study group is 18-25. Five-Factor Personality Scale, Short Grit Scale, and Personal Information Form were used as data collection tools in the study. Analysis of the data was performed using the Pearson product moments correlation with the SPSS program and t-test techniques for independent groups. According to the findings obtained from the study, a positive significant relationship was found between liability, openness to experience, extraversion and adaptation personality traits, and grit levels. It’s also found that a negative relationship between neuroticism and grit levels. In terms of gender, there was no significant difference between male students and female students in grit levels. However, in terms of gender, it was observed that there was a significant difference between male students and female students in terms of adaptation and openness to experience. The research findings were discussed within the scope of the literature and recommendations were made according to the results.

Introduction: Considering the high prevalence of anger problems in adolescence and the importance of emotion regulation in this age period, this study aims to assess the effectiveness of emotional regulation training in anger management and emotion regulation difficulties in adolescents by means of body postures, breathing pattern, and facial expressions.Method: A quasi-experimental research design along with pretest-posttest and control group was employed for the conduct of this study. For this purpose, the number of 50 adolescents was selected via purposive sampling through screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. These participants were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups and the experimental group then received 8 sessions of emotion regulation training. In this period, the control group received the treatment unrelated to emotion regulation training. Both groups were assessed in terms of Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 (STAXI-2) before and after the treatment as well as in the three-month follow-up. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics, including covariance analysis.Results: Data analysis showed that emotion regulation training has a significant effect on anger management and components emotion regulation difficulties in adolescents.Conclusion: As per the results of this study, it is recommended that emotion regulation training be extensively conducted in the form of educational and training programs for adolescents, especially in schools.
