Thanks to newly collected material from the Terra Nova Bay area (Ross Sea, Antarctica), we discuss the taxonomy of the ampharetid genera Amage Malmgren, 1866 and Amythas Benham, 1921. A new species of Amage, A. giacomobovei sp. nov., is described based on morpho-anatomical data. This is the second new species described from an area which appears to be rich in ampharetids, a coastal embayment at ~500 m depth near the Italian “Mario Zucchelli” research station. The new species is characterized by having 16 abdominal uncinigers and four pairs of branchiae that readily distinguish it from its congeners. Tubes of A. giacomobovei sp. nov. are also characteristic in showing a large amount of embedded sponge spicules, suggesting a possible close association to spicule mats. Based on the amended diagnoses of the two genera, Amage septemdecima Schüller & Jirkov, 2013 is transferred to the genus Amythas. Finally, to simplify the task of ampharetid genera recognition for untrained people, we provide a dichotomic key for ampharetid genera found in Antarctica and a checklist of species occurring in Terra Nova Bay.

The Polychaeta “Sedentaria” collected in Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) during the Second Italian Oceanographic Antarctic Expedition (1989–90) have been studied. A total of 1518 specimens have been examined and 43 species, belonging to 14 families, have been identified. A new species of Oweniidae, Myriochele antarctica and a new subspecies of Spionidae, Scolelepis eltaninae nudipalpa are described. Terebellidae was the most important family in number of species, Spionidae, Oweniidae and Orbiniidae in number of individuals. More than 60% of the species are endemic to Antarctic and sub-Antarctic areas.

This new dataset presents occurrence data for Porifera collected in the Ross Sea, mainly in the Terra Nova Bay area, and curated at the Italian National Antarctic Museum (MNA, section of Genoa). Specimens were collected in 331 different sampling stations at depths ranging from 17 to 1,100 meters in the framework of 17 different Italian Antarctic expeditions funded by the Italian National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA). A total of 807 specimens, belonging to 144 morphospecies (i.e., 95 taxa identified at species level and 49 classified at least at the genus level) is included in the dataset. Nearly half (45%) of the species reported here correspond to species already known for Terra Nova Bay. Out of the remaining 55% previously unknown records, under a third (~29%) were classified at the species level, while over a quarter (~26%) were ascribed to the genus level only and these would require further study. All vouchers are permanently curated at the MNA and are available for study to the scientific community. A 3D model of an uncommon species from the Ross Sea, i.e. Tethyopsisbrondstedi (Burton, 1929), is also presented and will be made available for outreach purposes.

Six new species of marine Enchytraeidae, Grania hirsuticauda sp.n., G. acanthochaeta sp.n., G. carchinii sp.n., G. angustinasus sp.n., G. antarctica sp.n. and G. algida sp.n., are described from benthic material collected in McMurdo Sound during 1959–61 and Terra Nova Bay in 1988. They represent the first records of this family from below the Antarctic circle and, together with tubificids, the first oligochaetes from the Ross Sea. G. hirsuticauda, apparently the most widespread species in McMurdo Sound, is distinguished by having setae abruptly larger in the posterior third of the body and almost nodulate; a T-shaped prostomial bifurcation of the dorsal vessel, short sperm funnels and sperm sac, and thick-walled spermathecae. G. acanthochaeta possesses a unique, thorn-like, setal morphology and diverticulate spermathecal ampullae. G. carchinii, the only new species lacking lateral setae, is also distinguished by a remarkably high development of the chloragogen tissue and the possession of nephridia at 6/7. G. angustinasus, the most abundant species in the sampling area in Terra Nova Bay, and G. antarctica, have the same setal distribution, size and (curved) shape, but show different forms of penial bulbs (more complex in G. angustinasus) and spermathecal structures (the ampullae being larger and the external pores more posterior in G. antarctica). G. algida is distinguished by its L-shaped setae and carrot-shaped, diverticulate, spermathecal ampullae. All the new species lack cuticular penial stylets as well as spermathecal ectal glands. All species but G. carchinii are peculiar in possessing, in front of the brain, a middorsal vesicular body of specific shape and size containing a few refractile inclusions; a sensory (possibly a statocyst-like) function is suggested for this ‘head organ’, which has not been previously reported in the Oligochaeta.

This study provides taxonomic and distributional data of bryozoan species from the Ross Sea area, mainly around Terra Nova Bay, based on specimens curated at the Italian National Antarctic Museum (MNA, Section of Genoa). Bryozoan specimens were collected at 75 different sampling stations in the Ross Sea and in the Magellan Strait, in a bathymetric range of 18–711 meters, during 13 expeditions of the Italian National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA) conducted between 1988 and 2014. A total of 282 MNA vouchers corresponding to 311 specimens and 127 morphospecies have been identified and included in the present dataset. 62% of the species were already reported for the Terra Nova Bay area, where most of the Italian samples come from, with a 35% of samples representing new records classified at the specific level, and 3% classified at the genus level. These new additions increase to 124 the total number of species known to occur in Terra Nova Bay. Four 3D-models of Antarctic bryozoans from the Ross Sea are also presented and will be released for research and educational purposes on the Museum website.

A new species of the genus Drosophila, Drosophila sagittifolii sp. nov. is described. Adult specimens of D. sagittifolii were aspirated from the inflorescences of Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott (camacho), from which they also emerged, at the Río Guajalito Research Station, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Ecuador.

In 1957 James R. Beer, Edwin F. Cook and Robert G. Schwab, of the University of Minnesota, conducted an investigation of mammals and their ectoparasites in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona. The area studied included varied habitats in the general vicinity of the Southwestern Research Station of the American Museum of Natural History at Portal. An account of this investigation has now been published (Beer et al., 1959).

AbstractWintertime (April–September) area estimates of the Terra Nova Bay polynya (TNBP), Antarctica, based on satellite microwave radiometry are compared with in situ observations of water salinity, temperature and currents at a mooring in Terra Nova Bay in 1996 and 1997. In 1996, polynya area anomalies and associated anomalies in polynya ice production are significantly correlated with salinity anomalies at the mooring. Salinity anomalies lag area and/or ice production anomalies by about 3 days. Up to 50% of the variability in the salinity at the mooring position can be explained by area and/or ice production anomalies in the TNBP for April–September 1996. This value increases to about 70% when considering shorter periods like April–June or May–July, but reduces to 30% later, for example July–September, together with a slight increase in time lag. In 1997, correlations are smaller, less significant and occur at a different time lag. Analysis of ocean currents at the mooring suggests that in 1996 conditions were more favourable than in 1997 for observing the impact of descending plumes of salt-enriched water formed in the polynya during ice formation on the water masses at the mooring depth.
