Abstract This article focuses specifically on two examples of fantasy stories and their translations into Russian: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Lewis 1950), a classic English fantasy story, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Rowling 1997), a modern blending of fantasy with the traditional English school story. The analysis shows that the approach to translation is largely random. In the translations of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, there is some evidence of simplification as a strategy, and some confusion over the appropriate translation of cultural items in the translations of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Generally, however, the translators are shown not to have attempted to situate the stories in a Russian context, and have retained intact both the cultural backdrop and the moral values put forward in the works. A study of the reception of such works by young readers would provide valuable information about the success or failure of the translations discussed in this article.

"Harry Potter" and Moral Value Learning ​​is a qualitative study of the response of students aged 11-13 at an international Christian school in Bekasi, Indonesia, towards the phenomenal J.K Rowling text. Through the hermeneutic method, this research tried to seek the influence of Harry Potter texts, which are suspected of bringing adverse effects for their young readers. Besides, this research offers rational considerations to the authority in schools, especially regarding matters related to book censorship. Three things investigated in this study were the ability of students to think critically in making a distinction between fiction and facts in the Harry Potter text, the influence of the Harry Potter text on students' tendencies of violence and occultism, and finally about student learning of moral values ​​contained in the text. The data was collected through in-depth interviews with two male respondents and three female respondents aged 11-13 years with a high religious background, mediocre, and less significant religious background. It was found that all respondents were able to distinguish between fiction and facts in the Harry Potter texts, and there was no significant evidence that the texts influenced respondents' tendency for violence nor respondents' interest in occultism. This study also found that respondents were able to identify the moral values ​​contained in the text.

This article deals with the moral values and social issues described in the school story of the famous English writer Sarah Fielding “The Governess, or the Little Female Academy”, which is considered one of notable works written specifically for children in the Age of Enlightenment. The article examines some of the components of the genre “School Story” – the traditional opening and description of the daily routine of an educational institution for girls, plot twists, certain characters, etc. At the same time, following Sarah Fielding’s ideas, the author scrutinises the issue of children's reading and the need to discuss its content with adults. Using the examples of the wards' stories about their life before school, the problem of interpersonal relations of characters is analysed – within a family, with parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives, governesses and servants; whereas outside it, with representatives of various social groups. Much attention is paid to the depiction of behaviour etiquette and constant striving for perfection, as well as control over various emotions. As a result of the study, it is concluded that school stories are useful for young readers due to their topicality and positive general attitude, which allows adolescents to overcome numerous life difficulties during the formation and development of their personalities.

Trites (2000:117) argues that death is a biological imperative that possibly operates even more powerfully on the human mind than sexuality. In this article it will be suggested that coming to terms with the inevitability of mortality is a key maturational task, but that popular young adult fantasies dealing with immortal vampires or decaying zombies usually offer little or no support to adolescents struggling to deal with this issue. By contrast, it will be suggested that novels such as those in Terry Pratchett’s Johnny Maxwell series, JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea series and Philip Pullman’s His dark materials trilogy provide adolescent readers with safe spaces in which to explore not only the threat of death, but a range of social and religious approaches to the problem. In this way, young readers may be encouraged to accept themselves, in Heidegger’s (1962 [1927]:304–307) terms, as ‘Being-towards-death’ and eventually even be empowered by such an acknowledgement.

What we think and what we read has more influence on our political attitudes as adults. Much of our political information comes from literature. The amount of time the average person spends watching television becomes a dominant force to how we view the world. We see books such as Harry Potter and the Wizard of Oz tell a story that is brings a message on the political landscape of a nation, as Dorothy’s party returns after killing the Witch of the West, the Wizard keeps them waiting, then puts them off. Short stories and novels that make the reader feel that they are getting to know real people dealing with believable situations can be considered literature that is realistic fiction. This type of fiction has been found in the stories of fiction shows that the impact of characters has a direct influence on reader’s decision-making and world view. This is due to creating characters that are realistic to the people and situations found in society today.

<p>The question of how we can speak of a transcendent God and God’s relationship with creation has been pondered for millennia. Today particular difficulties arise when communicating Christian atonement theories to a generation for whom the world of the Bible is increasingly foreign, and in a time when theologians and philosophers are questioning both the violence of some atonement theories and the existence of “superior transcendence.” This study explores the presence of biblical motifs in the stories of atonement in young adult fantasy works. It suggests that the use of these motifs to make sense of atonement within fantasy worlds may assist readers to make sense of the same motifs when they are used to portray the Christian story of atonement.  The investigation begins by discussing the place of imagination, reason and transcendence in religious language and argues for the centrality of metaphor and myth in religious expression. It suggests that young people today still seek intermediaries—“priests and prophets”—between themselves and the unknown, but they now find them in the fantasy authors who continue to use imaginative language to communicate transcendence.  A central trope in contemporary fantasy fiction is that of a death that saves the world. Contrary to the expectations raised by René Girard’s work, these are not the violent deaths of a helpless scapegoat. The biblical mythologems incorporated in these works allow the authors to explore instead ideas of divine and human self-giving. This is demonstrated by tracing how mythological understandings of blood, victory and covenant in the Bible are incorporated into the atonement process of three fantasy series: the Old Kingdom Chronicles by Garth Nix (1995-2003), the Mortal Instruments trilogy by Cassandra Clare (2007-2009), and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (1997-2007).  The thesis proposes that the presence of biblical mythologems in contemporary fantasy stories of atonement means that a better understanding of their use in each domain can both enrich our appreciation of this kind of literature and provide teenagers with an imaginative language with which to consider aspects of Christian atonement. The prevalence of atonement ideas within recent fantasy books suggests that, by attending to the mythologems of atonement drawn from the Bible, the church might both rediscover the imaginative power of her own story and convey it meaningfully to young readers of fantasy literature today.</p>

Axiology is the branch of practical philosophy which studies the nature of value. Axiologists study value in general rather than moral values in particular and frequently emphasize the plurality and heterogeneity of values while at the same time adopting different forms of realism about values. Historically, three groups of philosophers can be described as axiologists: the original Austrian and German schools of value phenomenologists; American theorists of value who offered an account of value which reduces it to human interests; and an English school, influenced by Austro-German phenomenology, which included such diverse figures as G.E. Moore, Hastings Rashdall and W.D. Ross. Recent philosophy has seen a resurgence of interest in value realism in the broadly axiological tradition.
