Gonad rematuration and reproductive cycle of the mud clam Anodontia edentula in Guimaras, Central Philippines

Anodondia edentula locally known as imbao bayi is a commercially important mud clam harvested for human consumption in Central Philippines. Since it is used as a source of food and livelihood to the local gleaners, it was observed that fewer and smaller mud clams have been harvested. Thus, regulating proper collection of this organism and a sound knowledge of its reproductive cycle are necessary. This study aimed to describe some aspects of the reproductive biology of A. edentula. Fifty mud clams were collected and dissected every month. Monthly monitoring of the gonadosomatic index in the study shows that A. edentula spawns throughout the year. Under laboratory condition, male has shorter gonadal rematuration than females. Spent male A. edentula that spawned will spawn again after three weeks through serotonin injection while females will spawn gain after six weeks as long as intrinsic and extrinsic factors are met. This type of maturation schedule suggests continuous reproductive competence. Higher spawning rate is obtained in clams reared with mud substrate than without mud substrate , but the survival rate was found to be higher for clam reared without mud substrate than with mud substrate. To study the reproductive biology of Moenkhausia intermedia (Eigenmann, 1908) in Itumbiara reservoir, Paranaíba river, Goiás, Brazil, a total of 301 specimens (237 females and 64 males) were captured quaterly from January to December 1993. The gonadosomatic index of females and males were related to morphologic variations of the gonads in different reproductive cycle stages (RCS). Analysis of RCS frequency and variations in the gonadosomatic index showed that M. intermedia reproduces during the whole year with fractional spawning. The smallest standard length at advanced maturity stage was estimated as 6.6 cm for females and 6.0 cm for males. The stomach repletion and coelomic fat indexes of both sexes reached peak values in the rest stage, suggesting that this species probably store energy in this phase and consume its fat reserve during reproduction. In the Itumbiara reservoir there was female predominance (4:1). Males were smaller than females, indicating sexual dimorphism in M. intermedia.

The burgeoning landscape of literature on mobility inequalities has led to discrepancies between a conceptual understanding of mobility inequalities and its implementation in planning practice. Reviewing 270 publications across five decades, this article identifies intrinsic and extrinsic factors and approaches for understanding and analyzing mobility inequality. Using two thought experiments to critically locate variations in factors and approaches, dilemmas and challenges in addressing mobility inequality for the marginalized are exposed. The article concludes with future research directions for investigating mobility inequality.

Portunus pelagicus a commercially important crab species found in Chilika lagoon constitutes about 20% of the total crab production. The carapace width (CW) ranges from 4.5–10.5 cm in both the sexes during the study period. The maximum abundance of male was at 6.6 to 7.5 cm CW whereas the females predominate from 6.6 to 9.5 cm CW. The relationship between carapace length (CL) and CW is linear in both sexes which indicates isometric growth. However, the relationship between CL, CW with total body weight (TW) is exponential. The food habit from gut content analysis shows that the species is highly carnivorous and the main food items include prawn carapace and appendages (27.58%), molluscan remaining (21.55%), fish bone (7.75%), seagrass (1.72%), unidentified materials (4.31%) and the mixed food (37.06%). The feeding index was found highest (80.95%) in February whereas it is lowest (60.9%) in June. The mature females are observed from May to July with a peak in July in the lagoon. The highest gonadosomatic index is found in July with an average CW of 10.5 cm. No berried females are found in the study period, which indicates that it did not spawn inside the lagoon and migrates to the sea during the rainy season.

Abstract Introduction: Postural deviations are frequent in childhood and may cause pain and functional impairment. Previously, only a few studies have examined the association between body posture and intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Objective: To assess the prevalence of postural changes in school children, and to determine, using multiple logistic regression analysis, whether factors such as age, gender, BMI, handedness and physical activity might explain these deviations. Methods: The posture of 288 students was assessed by observation. Subjects were aged between 6 and 15 years, 59.4% (n = 171) of which were female. The mean age was 10.6 (± 2.4) years. Mean body weight was 38.6 (± 12.7) kg and mean height was 1.5 (± 0.1) m. A digital scale, a tapeline, a plumb line and standardized forms were used to collect data. The data were analyzed descriptively using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis (significance level of 5%). Results: We found the following deviations to be prevalent among schoolchildren: forward head posture, 53.5%, shoulder elevation, 74.3%, asymmetry of the iliac crests, 51.7%, valgus knees, 43.1%, thoracic hyperkyphosis, 30.2%, lumbar hyperlordosis, 37.2% and winged shoulder blades, 66.3%. The associated factors were age, gender, BMI and physical activity. Discussion: There was a high prevalence of postural deviations and the intrinsic and extrinsic factors partially explain the postural deviations. Conclusion: These findings contribute to the understanding of how and why these deviations develop, and to the implementation of preventive and rehabilitation programs, given that some of the associated factors are modifiable.
