In this study, the cloze-elide test was developed and administered under time constraints. This research is aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the speeded cloze-elide test and investigate its relationship with reading comprehension, C-Test, and multiple-choice cloze test. Processing speed is a vital indicator to distinguish high to low levels of language proficiency. The obtained test scores of the test takers' performance in the restricted time reveal their level of overall language proficiency. One-hundred fifty Iranian undergraduate English students were selected to participate in this study. A reading comprehension test, C-tests, multiple-choice cloze tests and speeded cloze-elide tests were presented to the students. The Cronbach's alpha reliability revealed that speeded cloze-elide test is highly reliable. Moreover, the principal component analysis resulted in the presence of one component which supports the unidimensionality of the data. The findings also illustrated that the C-Test is a slightly better measure of reading comprehension than multiple-choice cloze test and speeded cloze-elide test. Based on the analysis of data, time limitations increase the test validity and test reliability on the cloze-elide test.

Exposing abundance of English information related to students’ educational background knowledge can improve their competence in comprehending English texts. Thus, this study developed ESP reading materials for accounting students. It was aimed at finding out what kind of ESP reading materials should be developed to increase accounting students’ reading skill, and examining the validity, practicality, and potential effect of the developed ESP reading materials. The product was developed by using Akker covering the phases of analysis, design, evaluation and revision. Furthermore, formative evaluation proposed by Tessmer was used. This study involved 40 students selected by using purposive technique. The data were gathered from the results of validation sheet questionnaire of content and instructional design, students’ responses questionnaire, and reading comprehension test. The analysis of validation sheet questionnaire from two experts’ judgement indicated that the developed product had very high validity (3.61). Meanwhile, the results of students’ responses questionnaire showed that the average score in one-to-one evaluation was 3.3 and in small group evaluation was 3.5. It revealed that the product was denoted as practical in which both evaluations were in high practicality category. At last, the results of reading comprehension test showed that there was 64% of the students could pass the minimum mastery criterion. Thus, the findings indicated that ESP reading materials for accounting students can be determined had average potential effect after being implemented to the students in a real class. In other words, ESP reading materials developed in this study were potential effect enough to increase the students’ reading skill.

ABSTRACT Objective: to translate and adapt Falls Efficacy Scale – International (FES-I). To analyze the psychometric properties of the FES-I Portugal version. Method: psychometric study. Sample consisting of 170 elderly people residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. A two- part form was used (sociodemographic characterization and FES-I Portugal). The cross-cultural adaptation was performed and the following psychometric properties were evaluated: validity (construct, predictive, and discriminant), reliability (Cronbach’s alpha), and inter-rater reliability. Results: the results allow us to verify a dimension of less demanding physical activities and another of more demanding physical activities. The inter-rater reliability study was 0.62, with an interclass correlation coefficient of 0.859, for a 95% confidence interval. The internal consistency of the Portuguese version was 0.962. Conclusion: the validity and reliability of the FES-I Portugal are consistent with the original version and proved to be appropriate instruments for evaluating the “impaired walking” and “risk of falls” nursing diagnoses in the older people.

Poor levels of English first additional language (EFAL) reading comprehension amongst school learners at most public schools in South Africa are a great concern. In fact, for learning to be successful and effective, learners need to be able to read well in EFAL. This is more so as EFAL serves as a language of learning and teaching (LOLT) for most learning areas in South Africa’s public schools. Against this background, this study set out in 2012 to investigate the English reading comprehension of Grade 10 EFAL learners at a senior secondary school. Using purposive and voluntary sampling techniques, the study had 17 EFAL learners(M = 10, F–7) as its participants. It employed three reading measures, a recall task, a summary and a comprehension test, which were based on three English extracts, to assess participants’ reading comprehension. It then assessed and scored participants’ responses to the three tasks by using an oral reading rubric and two prepared marking memoranda. One of the findings of this study was that, of the three reading tasks administered, participants did slightly above average in the comprehension test, but performed below average in the two other tasks – the recall and summary tasks.
