In the study reported on here we examined the attitudes of deaf learners towards biology in Ibadan, Nigeria. Forty-one deaf learners (28 males; 13 females) in the Secondary School II science classes from 3 government-funded secondary schools for the deaf were purposively selected for the study. In the study we adopted a descriptive survey research design of the correlational type. Four research questions were raised and answered. A structured questionnaire, “Deaf Learners and Biology Questionnaire” with a reliability coefficient of 0.81, was used for data collection. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and inferential statistics of Pearson product moment correlation, multiple regression and t-test at 0.05 level of significance. There was a positively significant relationship between academic self-efficacy and the attitudes of deaf learners towards biology (r = 0.511; p < 0.05); a significant but negative relationship between gender and the attitudes of deaf learners towards biology (r = 0.15; p < 0.05). No significant relationship between the onset of deafness and the attitudes of deaf learners towards biology (r = 0.810; p > 0.05) was observed. A total of 58.1% of the variance of the independent variables accounted for the attitudes towards biology among deaf learners who participated in the study. We conclude that academic self-efficacy has a great effect on the attitude of deaf learners towards biology. Gender contributes to and is inversely proportional to learners’ disposition towards biology. In light of the findings, appropriate recommendations are made.

The rapid increase in solid waste is a major environmental problem and recycling is argued to be a better solution to the problem. However, there is a broad agreement that there is a gap between the increasing awareness for recycling and the recycling behaviour among the consumers. The aim of this study is to investigate the recycling behaviour among 62 residents of Tioman Island. A structured questionnaire that included 33 items is used to obtain the data. The findings show a significant relationship between recycling behaviour and collectivism; a positive, weak relationship with recycling attitudes; and a negative relationship with materialism. The study examined the problem of disaster management in Nigeria using Bayelsa State as a case study. Four null hypotheses were raised and tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the descriptive survey design and sample sizes of 300 adults were drawn from fifteen (15) affected communities in Bayelsa State. The instrument used for data collection was a disaster management questionnaire and the data were analyzed using chi-square. The finding of the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between poor integrated policy and action plan as well as weak institutional capacity and collaboration of disaster management agencies and effectiveness of disaster management in Bayelsa State. The study clearly showed that there is a significant relationship between poor commitment and piece-meal approach by the multi-layered levels of government as well as poor stakeholders’ participation and synergy and effectiveness of disaster management in Bayelsa State. The study recommended among others that long-term monitoring and surveillance mechanism; continuous provision of infrastructure for the host communities by prospecting oil companies; adequate funding by governmental and non-governmental and the development of a national oil spill contingency plan should be adopted and deployed with an eye to guaranteeing sustainable development of the environment in the region.

AbstractPolycystic ovarian syndrome is an endocrine disorder which affects the adolescent girls. It has been found through studies that it affects around 5% to 10% of women in their reproductive years. The study was conducted to assess the knowledge on the polycystic ovarian syndrome among the student nurses. The data was collected from the nursing students by using structured questionnaire. The data collected from 150 samples in Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences. Descriptive survey research approach was adopted and data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Distribution of the samples on demographic characteristics revealed that 85% of the samples were in the age group of 21-25years, 75% of the samples were Christians, 82% of the samples were consuming mixed diet, and 92% samples had regular menstrual cycle. 76% of the samples were with average knowledge and 10.7% with good knowledge regarding polycystic ovarian syndrome. Hence the study concluded that Source of information, consumption of junk food, dietary patterns of the students were associated with their level of knowledge on PCOS at 5% level of significance.

Background: number of factors contribute to psychological disturbances among university students. Most important, such psychological factors may influence their academic satisfaction that associates with their performance. Purpose: To examine prediction power of academic stress and academic self-efficacy on academic satisfaction among nursing students. Methods: A convenience sample of 117 nursing students recruited from two nursing programs in Jordan; one private and one governmental. Self-report format was used to collect data from students regarding academic stress, academic self-efficacy, and academic satisfaction. Results: Nursing students had moderate level of academic self-efficacy, high level of academic stress, and low to moderate level of satisfaction about curriculum and faculty performance. Positive relationship found between students Grade Point Average and academic stress and self-efficacy, while there was negative relationship with academic satisfaction (p < .05). None of the demographic variables had was a significant predictor of academic satisfaction (p > .05). regression showed that self-efficacy, interaction, explained 36% of academic satisfaction about faculties. Conclusion: Academic self-efficacy anxiety among nursing students found to contribute to their academic satisfaction. Therefore, academics and psychological counselors at academic institutions need to give more attention to the psychosocial interaction and enhance mentoring and counseling skills to their students.

This study investigated the profitability of shrimp value chain. Primary data were obtained using well structured questionnaire from randomly selected 240 shrimp operators (harvesters, processors and marketers). Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used to analyze collected data. The result revealed that the mean profit realized was N70,092 N36,255 and N26,097.30 by harvesters, processors and marketers respectively. Value added at was N500 and N1000 per basket by processors and marketers respectively. Test of hypothesis indicates that quantity sold (0.218), price (0.033), bargaining power (0.002) and union dues (0.099), showed positive and significant relationship with shrimp value chain profitability. While market levy and store rent showed negative relationship with profitability in shrimp value chain. It was recommended that there should be moderate store rent. Marketers should increase their bargaining power at the point of procurement and union dues should be reduced so that shrimp value chain profitability can be enhanced.

The aim of this study was to explore if there is a significant difference between preservice teachers’ academic self-efficacy perceptions and their gender, fields of study in high school and departments at their university. The study was carried out through descriptive survey model, one of quantitative research models. The sample of the study consisted of 653 freshmen preservice teachers in the Faculty of Education at Gazi University. Convenience sampling method was used in the study. Percentage, frequency, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, Kruskal-Wallis and t test were used in the analysis of the data collected via “Academic Self-Efficacy Scale”. Findings reveal that there is no significant difference between preservice teachers’ academic self-efficacy levels and their gender, fields of study in high school and departments at their university. Findings also indicate that preservice teachers’ academic self-efficacy levels are in “partly sufficient” range.

This study was designed to determine the Skills Improvement Needs of Building Craftsmen in Building Construction Industries for National Security in Bauchi State, Nigeria. The research adopted a descriptive survey research design. The target population for the study was 61 respondents made up of 34 Building Engineers and 27 Foremen in the Building Construction Industries. A 63 item structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts and Cronbach alpha reliability estimate was used to ascertain the extent of sameness of the items and reliability coefficient of 0.82 was obtained. Data was collected and analysed using statistical package for social science (SPSS Version 22), Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research question, while t-test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings on skills required indicated that all the items are required by the respondents, and the finding on the techniques of improving skills gap indicated that the respondents agreed with all the items. Findings revealed that building craftsmen in building construction industries required all the practical skills need for improvement in their work trade in brick/block work skills, plastering/rendering skills and foundation skills for national security. The study therefore recommended among others, that Building Construction Industries should organize retraining workshop for their Craftsmen on the areas where they require skill improvements.

INTRODUCTION: It is an indisputable fact that people who live in societies will always need each other. In this regard, the members of a society should try to decrease the problems and difficulties of the community by participating in voluntary services. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship of self-efficacy with mindfulness and empathy in volunteers of the Red Crescent society in Saveh, Iran. METHODS: This practical study was conducted based on a descriptive-survey method. The population included 100 experts and key members of the Sistan and Baluchistan Crisis Management Coordination Council. In total 80 cases were selected using Cochranchr('39')s formula and purposive (snowball) sampling method. The data were collected through a 46-item researcher-made questionnaire. The face and content validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by experts, and the reliability of the questionnaire was estimated at 0.94 using Cronbachchr('39')s alpha coefficient, which indicated acceptable reliability of this scale. The data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 22) through multiple regression to evaluate the research hypotheses. FINDINGS: Based on the results, mindfulness (P<0.05, r=0.468) and expressive empathy (P<0.01, r=0.207) had a positive and significant relationship with self-efficacy; however, empathy did not have a relationship with other variables. Moreover, out of the subscales of empathy, empathy for others (P<0.05, r=-0.138) and control (P<0.01, r=-0.210) had a negative relationship with self-efficacy. The mindfulness variable was significant in the prediction of self-efficacy (F=25.353) which explains about 21.8% of the variance of the criterion variable. Moreover, the component of emotional stability was significant in the prediction of self-efficacy (F=16.379) which explains about 5% of the variance of the criterion variable. Therefore, with a coefficient of determination of 51.7% the changes in self-efficacy are explained by mindfulness and the component of emotional stability. CONCLUSION: According to the findings, the variables of mindfulness and the component of emotional stability can significantly predict self-efficacy. Furthermore, mindfulness with a beta of 0.467 had the greatest effect on self-efficacy.

SELF-EFFICACY AND ACADEMIC BURNOUT FOR WORKING STUDENTS. Academic burnout refers to stress, burden or other psychological factors because the learning process is followed by students so that it shows the state of emotional fatigue, tendency to depersonalization, and feeling of low personal achievement. There are individual factors that can affect burnout; one of the individual factors that can influence academic burnout is academic self-efficacy. This study aims to determine the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic burnout in working students. Based on the results of research and discussion, it can be concluded that there is a negative relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic burnout on students who work. This means that the higher academic self-efficacy, the lower academic burnout in working students, conversely the lower of Academic self-efficacy, the higher academic burnout in working students.

This study identified the practical skills possessed and skills required by furniture construction teachers in Zamfara and Katsina State, Nigeria. Three research questions that sort to determine the skills needs of furniture construction teachers were answered and one hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study was 42 teachers. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data from the 42 woodwork furniture construction teachers. The instrument had a reliability coefficient of 0.89 using Cronbach Alpa statistic.  Mean and standard deviation was used to answer research questions and a t-test was used to test the hypothesis using the IBM SPSS version 20. The findings of the study revealed that the respondents require skills on the ability to hold a saw with fore-finger straight out on one side of the handle, the ability to follow the “FEWTEL” method in preparing a piece of wood require further training, setting sliding bevel when marking out dovetail joint and selection of the right adhesive according to the purpose and type of wood as well as amount of force the adhesive would be subjected to required skills. It was recommended that; government should provide opportunities for furniture construction teachers to go on further training on the modern furniture construction technology required. The identified skills required by teachers of furniture construction should form the basis for the up-skill workshop to be organized as in-house training.
